Meeks to Interview a Second Time for Redskins Job

By Jason Reid and Jason La Canfora

Washington Post Staff Writers

Monday, January 28, 2008; E05

Indianapolis Colts assistant coach Ron Meeks will be interviewed a second time for the Washington Redskins' head coaching vacancy tomorrow, league sources said yesterday.

A day after assistant head coach-defense Gregg Williams, who was once under consideration to replace Joe Gibbs, left the organization, the Redskins finalized plans for another session with Meeks, who runs the Colts' defense, a source close to the search said. Owner Daniel Snyder and Vinny Cerrato, executive vice president of football operations, are expected to meet with Meeks in Indianapolis.

Meeks just completed his sixth season as the Colts' defensive coordinator. Indianapolis ranked third in the league in total defense this season and was ranked second against the pass. When contacted last night, Meeks only confirmed the Redskins have told him he still is under consideration.

"Obviously, Mr. Snyder and Vinny Cerrato are trying to go through this process as thoroughly as they can to select the Redskins' next coach and continue moving in the right direction," Meeks said. "I thought that my interview was a productive and positive interview and I appreciate being involved in the process.

"There are some great candidates out there . . . and this is just one of these processes you have to go through to get it right. Mr. Snyder has been very active throughout the process along with Vinny Cerrato. They're trying to get it right. They're trying to get the right coach in there."

With Williams, whom many players strongly supported, out of the process, Meeks and former New York Giants coach Jim Fassel are the known remaining candidates. Meeks, who coached Washington's defensive backs in the 2000 season, first interviewed on Jan. 17 at Snyder's home.

Meeks was the fifth candidate to discuss the position. His initial interview fulfilled the NFL's Rooney Rule, which stipulates that a team meet with at least one minority candidate for a head coaching vacancy.

Meeks would be the third candidate to interview more than once for the job but only the second still under consideration to replace Gibbs, who resigned as team president and coach on Jan. 8. Williams and Fassel also had multiple meetings with Snyder and Cerrato.

According to a report, Fassel appears to be the leading candidate after Washington on Saturday promoted defensive line coach Greg Blache to the top defensive position and hired former Seattle Seahawks assistant Jim Zorn to replace offensive play-caller Al Saunders, who was "released" with Williams. Blache and Zorn were among Fassel's top choices for those positions, NFL sources said, and Snyder was close to hiring Fassel four years ago until he lured Gibbs out of retirement.

But Blache and Zorn also were among the coaches Meeks would have considered to be his top lieutenants, said sources familiar with the process, and their names were discussed when Meeks first interviewed for more than 10 hours with Snyder and Cerrato. In one of his interviews, Zorn was told that Williams, Fassel or Meeks would be Washington's next head coach, league sources said.

Ron Meeks could very well be Washington's next head coach

Daniel Snyder and the train wreck known in league circles as the Washington Redskins are bringing back Ron Meeks for a second interview for their head coaching vacancy. Snyder has spent the last few weeks looking like a complete idiot, firing his defensive coordinator (who he interviewed for the HC job twice) and offensive assistant Al Saunders (who he also interviewed). Snyder also went and promoted Greg Blanche to DC and brought in Seattle's QB coach, Jim Zorn, as the new OC. Zorn plans to install a West Coast-style passing attack in Washington.

Snyder did all this without having a head coach hired who could, you know, help pick his own staff!

Already, Redskins fans are up in arms, screaming that Snyder is making disastrous coaching moves that are ruining a once great franchise. What I find funny is Redskins fans continue to support the team even though they all know the owner is idiot taking advantage of their rapid fanbase, which will watch whatever insane garbage if placed on the field. The solution to the Snyder problem is easy Redskins fans: Stop watching Redskins games and giving Daniel Snyder your money! You know Snyder sucks. You know (or, at least you should know) that the Skins have absolutely no chance of ever winning a Super Bowl as long as Snyder owns the team.

Stop. Being. Snyder's. *****.

Once Snyder figures out he can't dupe Redskins fans anymore, he'll sell the team and go back to creating goofy, crap-ass amusement parks. Then, a smart, intelligent owner will buy the team and bring Redskins fans the quality franchise they want and deserve.

In the meantime, only a candidate like Meeks could walk in and accept a HC job offer like the one Snyder has on the table. Meeks has done a fine job building Indy's defense, but he knows he won't sniff another HC job as long as he's in Tony Dungy's shadow. He also knows he has no shot at Indy's HC job after Dungy retires. Meeks is a good coach who will speak his mind, and maybe that's something the Redskins need.

More importantly, if Meeks gets the job, who will coach the defense for the Colts in 2008?

sory mods if this has been posted...did a search and didnt see it

Now things are wide open again.

Why does it take this long to hear this, and is it really possible that three candidates endorsed these guys?

Haha. Maybe we can get our own franchise QB to lead us to glory, provided we have some stability after this hire...

Manning: 6'5" 230 lbs, Campbell: 6'5" 233 lbs...I wish their play could be as similar.

Unfortunately its true. People can complain all they want, but if you dont actually change spending habits, it doesnt mean anything. Snyder isnt going to listen to a fan message board, but he has to listen to declining merchandise sales etc. Its a very hard place to be in as a fan, because on one hand you always want to support the team, but on the other, the best thing you can do is let it know that is going in the complete wrong direction. If you just support it blindly all the time, then nothing ever changes...

Its a tough position to be in. Our owner shouldnt put us in it.

Please for the love of everything burgundy and gold, let Meeks get this job instead of Fassil. Even if the worst case is we get a guy who learned year in and year out from one of the best in the game(Dungy), that would be a great improvement. Being in Indy, hes seen a great coach and organization and knows what it takes to win year in and year out.

Its not as hard as you think. Just stop going to games, paying him audatious parking fees, buying his over priced beer and merchandise, while sitting in crappy seats in a fan-unfriendly stadium.

You can still be a fan and support the team without making snyder rich. Just watch the game from home and stop buying his crap. its free to watch at home and you wont be rewarding him for his idiocy.
