Hawkskin
I was reading that the league is considering letting Reggie Bush wear the number 5 this year, something as we know is not done, rb's wear numbers in the 20-49 range...I think this will open a whole leage wide number change...but i am not opposed....what do you all think? Kurd Cudins
They will deny his request. Unless, of course, he develops into a drop back QB.
CPstretch
i think bush will be denied and RBs must remain from 20-49 range. i like how the NFL keeps uniform numbers structured like that
Hawkskin
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft06/news/story?id=2429358 check it out....sorry im not good with links...sounds like they are seriously considering
MoeRedskins
I don't think they should let him wear #5. If they were to let up on this rule, they can't do it now. It looks like they would be folding to the pressures of a star draftee wanting a number. Just keep the old system, it works fine (but its still a joke they wouldn't let Nolan wear a suit on the sidelines).
Kurd Cudins
"In 2004, running back Edgerrin James, then playing with the Indianapolis Colts, unsuccessfully petitioned for No. 5." If they deny a solid, well-respected veteran, and grant permission to an unproven rookie, that will send a VERY poor message. Looks like Tags has one more act as commish. Just think, if they give it to Bush, there will be a rush of players changing #'s and it will create chaos. This WILL NOT happen.
Monkskin81
If he gets number 5, other players will want numbers like 126 and 2 1/2. I believe it will be quite rediculous and the NFLPA will make a big deal about it.
talk show host
I'm just amused taht 15000 idiots bought #5 reggie bush jerseys.
talk show host
anyone have a link to the actual breakdowns of who can wear what numbers? like I know kickers, quarteracks, and receivers can all wear numbers in the teens. Cooley currently wears #47, but if he switches to being a tight end under saunders offense, will he have to change his number?
Rocky21
I agree with the earlier poster. If Bush gets # 5, that's bull****. He is a rookie with a scandal that has done zero in the NFL.
Peregrine
There is no way the NFL is going to give him #5. Its just a stupid rumor started by someone who wants to sell papers.
blang4d
I don't see the difference between letting Bush wear #5 and Keyshawn Johnson/TO wearing 19 (and other receivers wearing numbers in the teens) when receivers usually have numbers in the 80s. Hawkskin
I think it will be ok....as long as they keep the D line and O line with there numbers, so the refs can determine illegal men downfield. I think they should wear what they want....and nobody is gonna go in the hundreds or halfs come on. It will however open up alot of people to number changes. s0crates
Well, they used to make receivers wear 80-89, and they don't do that anymore.
Thirtyfive2seven
If that arguement was true Randy Moss wouldn't be allowed to wear.. whatever # he wears. 18? I dislike him so whatever.
FBChick
For the receivers.. it's been on the books for a while that they can wear the numbers 10-19.. so while they are not the "normal" number range.. it is within the guidelines.
GaryClark4Canton
This is crazy. This will open up a whole new can of worms. After you switch the rb numbers to 1 to 49 what's next Defense? Will Sean Taylor be allowed to wear #6? LB's being allowed to change their numbers as well would be a very bazarre thing indeed. I say if you change the rb #'s then allow a similar numbering system to that of the college ranks. As long as I don't see Chris Samuels types running around in number 1's let the skill positions have more freedom with their number choices in the NFL. pjfootballer
The NFL made allowances for receivers to wear 10-19 because they ran out of 80 numbers through retirements and carrying 5 receivers and 5 tight ends on the roster.
SkinsDukes
Its not going to happen, don't worry. Mort even reported on this on ESPN radio today. This isn't an issue you can petition the league on. Its a competition committee issue, and would actually require a league wide rules change started by the committee and then approved by the owners. Petitioning the league does no good, its not going to happen.
skinfan09
im thinkin that he should wear # 25......its like the extra 2 signifies his leap to the NFL

Winning Season Please!
Why can Cooley wear 47 being a TE? Is it because he is classified as an H-Back even though that is not really a recognized position? If so, will they make him switch since he is moving to a more traditional TE role this year and letting Sellers be the FB?
pjfootballer
TE's can wear 40-49 or 80-89. There were actually 2 players that wore 00. Jim Otto the center for the Raiders and Ken Burrough WR for Houston. I don't think the NFL will let anyone wear 0 or 00 again.
Winning Season Please!
I thought it was 10-19 and 80-89. "Two years ago, due to the increasing amount of retired numbers and more wide receivers and tight ends coming into the league, the NFL allowed those position players to wear either 10-19 or 80-89."http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft...tory?id=2405152
