sean_e_b
Not only do we have money for depth, but we have money for an extra player such as J.Abraham or J.Peterson. Hopefully we end up with Julian Peterson.

Art
This may be dumb... but what do they mean by an overture to Ayodele? Means we saw those negotiations go a little slow with the start of rumors that he might leave Dallas to see about other offers, and, we suddenly ring his agent and say, "Gosh, we'd really like you to visit," at which point his agent told Dallas who suddenly signed him. Probably cost them a $1 million more than they wanted to spend . Good work.

elkabong82
You do realize the player isn't actually giving anything up, right? He is getting the exact same amount of money it is just accounted for in a different way... You are right, but when it is a roster bonus, you get that money right then. When it is a signing bonus, it is spread out over a few years, or all of the years on the contract. Many, maybe most, of the contacts allow us to switch the roster bonus over when we want. Some, maybe Washington, volunteer to do this or are asked to do this. Remember, spreading out your money means the player is running the risk of not getting all that money as he might get injured and/or be cut/traded before the contract is up. A lot of these players willing to restructure earlier, before the CBA agreement, were doing this b/c they all know and feel this team is great, and will only get greater for years to come. They are all showing huge levels of commitment and unity. Something like this can best be spelled s-u-p-e-r-b-o-w-l.

WallyG3
Wow, I guess our FO does know more about how to work the cap than Sports Illustrated hacks. Who'd have thunk it? KevinKlein - don't think anybody is taking a pay cut. They are converting a roster bonus to a signing bonus. Dude still gets paid, the money just goes in a different accounting bucket. That's what someone who know business can do for you. Thanks Mr. Snyder!
fdarugar
Excerpt from WP... Redskins Notes: The Redskins have begun converting about $13.5 million in total roster bonuses due to players in 2006 into signing bonuses, which will clear about $10 million in total cap space. Linebacker Marcus Washington, for instance, agreed to convert $3.4 million in roster bonuses and base salary into a signing bonus, which is then prorated to save the team $2.5 million in cap space this year, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. . . . Gibbs conceded the team needs help at linebacker after the departure of LaVar Arrington, but the best of a thin free agent class has already signed elsewhere with little interest from Washington. The Redskins did make an overture to linebacker Akin Ayodele, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, but he signed with Dallas yesterday.. . . Gibbs said Williams contacted free agent safety Ryan Clark, a starter in 2005, yesterday and did not rule out re-signing him. . . . The Redskins re-signed free agent linebacker Khary Campbell. ----------------------------------------------------------------- I am guessing this would mean we are looking to resign Clark and get a starting calibur LB...I wonder why Ayodele was so quick to sign with the 'Boys without even considering us? Danny Boy lights he cigars with hundreds he coulda thrown 20 mil at Ayodele.

All the players who were restructuring were not sacrificing any money guaranteed to them. The only thing they sacrificed was the ability to collect a fat paycheck weekly this season in exchange for a really fat check right NOW. When accounted for under the cap the signing bonus is prorated while a roster bonus counts all in that one season. But this has absolutely nothing to do with when the guy receives it and whether or not he is guaranteed to receive it. Like I said the player's are not dumb and while they certainly help the team by doing it, they are not hurting their financial position in the process... And for the most part you don't see many teams doing this because A. no one around he is reporting on other teams, B. other teams don't have to do it nearly as much because they don't try and maximize thier cap year and and year out, and C. most teams don't spend like D. Snyder...
