PastaBelly takes another shot at Washington

To understand the concept of cash over cap, one must understand that the salary cap is just a bookkeeping number, one that can be massaged by amortizing signing bonuses and with other mechanisms. The cap has never been indicative of a team's payroll. The Washington Redskins, believed to be the highest revenue producing machine in the league, have had payrolls well over $100 million the last few seasons, even though the highest salary cap level ever was in 2005, at $85.5 million.

For the fans who can't get their heads around how this works, here's a simple example: Let's say the Redskins signed an unrestricted free agent to a five-year deal that includes a signing bonus of $10 million and a base salary of $1 million for the first season of the contract. In salary cap terms, the Redskins are charged only $3 million, arrived at by prorating the signing bonus over five years and then adding the base salary. But in real dollars expended, or payroll, that player cost the Redskins $11 million for the first year. That's a difference of $8 million between what the player was actually paid and what his cap charge was for the initial season of the contract.

Agreed, that's not a shot at all. That's pretty straight reporting. What he's ACTUALLY doing is building the first case for educating fans so they understand how we do things, so he doesn't have to explain why he KNEW THAT and was still so wrong all along about our cap situation. This is a perfect CYA. Polite, calm, informational. Hoping to divert attention from previous nonsense.

Regardless, it's Pastabelly. The only headlines I want to see involving him are like:

"Knucklehead sportswriter having foot surgically removed from mouth"

"Len realizes nobody cares, devotes life to living alone in woods"

"ESPN, financally bankrupt, now matches level of writing talent"

Exactly. That wasn't meant for Redskins fans... it was meant for non-educated fans of other teams who can't wrap their head around cap economics.

Nothing malicious there... straight forward explanation.

And I'm the ref conspiracist and media conspiracist. But this isn't a shot. At least not this part of the article :)

It does only mention the Redskins however. He could and probably should have at least mentioned that they're not the only team that does this. Maybe he did in the rest of the article. I don't click on any links to Lenny though.

I'm also not sure that there many actual football fans out there that haven't heard an explanation about bonuses being prorated over the length of a contract. It's not new and it's not rocket science. I'd have to say that those who may have learned something from that article could easily have also gotten the misguided impression that the Redskins are the only team doing it.

Agree,

Some of you need to relax when reading Lenny or Peter, it seems some of you start drooling the minute you see the article, looking for blood :silly: kind of shocked Bubba did not post this ;)

That is not a shot, its almost a complement by using the Skins as a example of great money management and massaging as he put it. It also is helpful is showcasing the cash over cap dilemma we have heard so much about which I hope doesn't get modified or limited as his example seems like good business using the leagues rules and staying within them. Don't cry wolf everytime he pens something as he gives us enough real ammo to state our case of bias. Also this article if read correctly will learn those idiot fans of others teams that yell from the mountain top after every signing of ours saying "how can they do this every year? how can they afford him? they must be cheating!". Well done Lenny.

There are hidden revenues which the team is not required to disclose. From what is reported, it is believed and seems pretty clear that the Redskins generate the most revenue of any NFL team.

I love it when people are grasping at air to try and insult and demean people for no reason. Lenny was using the Skins as an example of excellent cap management because we are the team known for doing this so prevelently.
