brandymac27
Quote Sen. Bernie Sanders calls himself a democratic socialist. Sen. Elizabeth Warren says she is a capitalist to her "bones." And yet, the pair are widely viewed to be competing for the same territory in a potential 2020 Democratic presidential primary. Not that anyone should be surprised. Both Sanders and Warren made their names railing at the excesses and failures of an increasing unequal economy -- one that voters across the ideological spectrum routinely describe as unfair or, in many cases, "rigged." Polling from a variety of sources has for years now consistently turned up evidence of frustration rooted in decades of economic dislocation, spanning both Republican and Democratic administrations. In 2018, buoyed in part by the rise of the progressive left, we're beginning to see more Americans take a deeper look at the system underlying -- and, in some cases, feeding -- their anger: capitalism. In a Fox News poll out this week, 36% of Americans said it would be a "good thing" for the country to "move away from capitalism to more socialism," while 51% called it a "bad thing." Most of the chatter of late has surrounded socialism, but the judgment rendered here on capitalism is just as interesting. Perhaps more. On the three previous occasions the question had been asked, support for a move had never surpassed 23% (2009) and the opposition always came in at no less than 64%. zoony
These are such arbitrary definitions, entire debate is ultimately pointless
TradeTheBeal!
One could make the argument that our version of capitalism has been a massive failure for the last 30 years or so.
Riggo-toni
That's a failure of government, not capitalism. I do NOT want us imitating European socialism; this doesn't need to be a binary choice between the crony kleptocratic "capitalism" of Trump or the overreaching socialism of Bernie et al. Capitalism with sensible cost benefit analysis based regulations and a modest safety net for the elderly and infirm.
Jumbo
based on lifelong study my new idea is that wherever humans gather into organized societies they should be attacked and scattered

They are capitalists. Just have a lot more of a safety net for it's people, which America does not.
Renegade7
@brandymac27 and @zoony, felt we had a pretty decent disscusion not to long ago about this (that I need to back to @PeterMP on). I agree that the more vague the definition, the more people argue for their interperation of it. Economies are not toys to play with
PleaseBlitz
We're 8 months removed from a $1.5 trillion tax cut for the top 0.1% richest Americans and corporations, and people are asking if socialism is winning?
