REDSKINS SIGN CB CHRIS CULLIVER, DL TERRANCE KNIGHTON

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed unrestricted free agent cornerback Chris Culliver and unrestricted free agent defensive lineman Terrance Knighton. Terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Culliver (6-0, 199) was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round (80th overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft. Culliver compiled 121 tackles, seven interceptions, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 46 career games with 20 starts for the 49ers and appeared in Super Bowl XLVII.

Last season, Culliver established career highs in starts (14), tackles (45), interceptions (four) and passes defensed (14).

Culliver played collegiately at South Carolina from 2007-10, recording 156 career tackles (106 solo), four sacks and three interceptions while seeing time at cornerback, safety and receiver. He earned second-team All-SEC honors as a junior in 2009.

Culliver, 26, attended Garner Magnet H.S. in Garner, N.C., where he was a Rivals.com five-star recruit despite not playing football until his sophomore year. He was born on Aug. 17, 1988.

Knighton (6-3, 331) is entering his seventh NFL season after being originally selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the third round (72nd overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft. For his career, Knighton has appeared in 93 career regular season games with 81 starts, compiling 201 tackles (131 solo), 12.5 sacks, 11 passes defensed, three forced fumbles, two fumbles recovered and two interceptions.

Knighton spent his first four NFL seasons with the Jaguars before signing with the Denver Broncos as an unrestricted free agent on March 13, 2013. Knighton started all 32 regular season games and four postseason games for the Broncos across the 2013-14 seasons, including Super Bowl XLVIII.

Knighton played collegiately at Temple from 2005-08, recording 184 tackles (105 solo), seven sacks, three forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries and four blocked kicks in 46 career games with 34 starts.

Knighton, 28, attended Windsor (Conn.) H.S., where he was a two-year letterman at defensive end and tight end. He was born on July 4, 1986.

I like both signings. Defense should have gotten better.  Culliver had a rough start to life, but people change and mature, so I hope he has.

Both are good signings, both have a little risk, but neither are ridiculously risky.

SM is doing a heck of a job so far.

Oh, and btw, I am waiting for Chris Russell to come out and say that if Haslett had gotten these players, he'd have been a huge success.

That Knighton 1 year deal is something else. I wonder if they have discussed what we will give him if he proves himself, any chance he's on a promise from us based on performance this season.

I have two possible options.

  • OLD REDSKINS:  They asked him to play in a different role and want to see if he can perform at OLB before making him the richest player in the league.
  •
  • "NEW" REDSKINS:  SM isn't totally sold on him but the coaches like him, and the one year deal is the compromise.

  absolutely hilarious.

It's just like this team to put a 330 lb guy at a LB position.

Don't know much about Culliver but I'm glad someone looked at the team and said "wait a minute, we run a 3-4 and don't have a nose tackle...why the F not?!?".   It's also kind of funny that two best friends are the starting and backup NT for this team.  Assuming they don't move Baker to DE.

I LOVE these moves. Culliver sounds like the perfect FA. He is just hitting his stride and an instant major upgrade to our secondary. I hope its a long term deal (with behavior clauses of course). With Culliver and the upgrades to our D line, I think we have already taken a big step forward as a team and the draft should provide plenty more talent, whoever they chose. Freakin' HAIL!

From the WT article announcing his signing:

In Washington, the player known as “Pot Roast” will be reunited with defensive tackle Chris Baker, one of his closest friends. The two grew up together in Windsor, Connecticut, and Knighton will be the best man in Baker’s wedding this weekend.

There's also a heck of a picture of the dude.  (Doesn't seem to want to embed.).  So people can start working on their Man Crush.  :)

Good Job, i admit to being rather angry that some of the guys i felt we should have at least talked to weren't even sniffed.  I mean here they are asking again for patients and for us to be understanding so they can have another 3 years to do it right.  The shift has been hard, i mean we have been in rebuild mold for almost 20 years. All i was asking was Iupati, Searcy,  Gresham,  and maybe Carter to take Orakpo's place. Carter is an outside linebacker that played inside for da cowboys and he is much quicker and faster than Orakpo. Also wanted Flowers to bring him home but clearly he doesn't want to come home. And i was hoping the Skins would try and get Foles but that also won't happen.  But these are much more measured moves they are making, actually i am surprised we got Knighton, glad we did but surprised. The withdraw symptoms  are  slowly  backing off. I hope he brings in the former Raiders center ( can't remember how to spell his name).  He also can play guard. 6"3 315 fyi.

Carter isn't an OLB in the 3-4. He's not a passrusher. He and Orakpo don't play the same position or have remotely the same skill-set, period. He'd be an ILB here. Plus, he's got an injury history of his own. From your quicker/faster comment I kind of feel like you got this from looking at Madden rosters.

<edit---more at link>

The Redskins believe that Culliver, 26, was worthy of No. 1 cornerback money because of the attributes they had observed in him, Coach Jay Gruden explained on Wednesday, as he spoke on the team’s free-agent moves for the first time.

“Watching all the corners that were free in free agency, obviously Darrelle Revis was in a class by himself. After that, Chris Culliver is one of the better corners we had graded – a  major target for us,” Gruden said.  “I like his toughness. He’s a great tackler, a great competitor. You could see that on tape and he has the ability to travel with the good receivers. We’ll see the Dez Bryants and Odell Beckhams in our division and give him an opportunity to do that.”

Asked to explain what signs the team looked for when trying to gauge the competitiveness of cornerbacks, Gruden said, “You see a corner want to stick his head in there and make tackles and really fly to the football and challenge the ball when it’s in the air and challenge people in bump and run. You can see [Culliver] competing on every down in every phase, getting his hands on people at the line, running to the football. Doing a great job in run support. There’s not a lot of weaknesses in his game. We’re excited to have him.”

Culliver has some off-field baggage, including charges stemming from a hit-and-run, which this week were reduced to a misdemeanor.

But Gruden, like Scot McCloughan the day before, said after doing their research, the Redskins had no concerns with Culliver’s past.

“Not at all. They’re all cleared up,” Gruden said. “We’re excited to have him. He’s a great kid. Got the chance to talk to him and interview him and spend a lot of time with him. He’s raring to go.”

The Redskins made Culliver, who last season had four interceptions for San Francisco, the highest-paid cornerback on their roster. Coaches now have some sorting out to do.
