Thanks for the thread and work put into it. Looking forward to seeing this take shape.

I know we tend to overrate our own players but dang, it's going to be tough making the cuts especially on the defensive side of the ball. I'd hate being the guy having to pick that. There is a lot of talent there that we need to take advantage of.

MTGTM...

I'm telling you... Linebacker is always where my heart is what I love to watch... and it's going to be tough.  I'm rooting hard for Vic So'oto, but I don't know how he gets on the team right now.  It's going to be tough for sure.

The whole front seven is going to be tough with the injuries, guys coming off injury, suspensions, and everything else going into at the moment.

And that doesn't even count Tapp as an OLB like we think/though he may be.  The Redskins website has him listed as a DE (which is sure to change, but we'll see).

DC9, wasn't FB Boyce waived if I'm not mistaken? And though I realize Tapp is listed as a DE, I think it's safe to assume he will be playing OLB. Just wanted to ask about that and thank you for the hard work you put into these threads. It is appreciated.

Also, I noticed RB Morris isn't listed. That might mess up your count.

Thanks for this.  I've been keeping my own list for a couple of years.  I have mine broken down by position on one page and by number on the other.

Also, Peterson and Worthington passed waivers and were put on IR.  IR should be included also. And Tanard Jackson is still ours, but is on the suspended list.

Yeah, PJ. I have my list that I've been keeping over the years myself (which drove my ex-wife insane :D ). And I actually couldn't figure out why I kept coming up with 91 players on the roster til I realized I was counting T. Jax, when he actually doesn't count while he's suspended. And you're right about Peterson and Worthington clearing waivers and being designated to the IR.

Yes I read he was, but he's on the official roster still... the only thing I can think of is he was waived and then when Worthington was put on waivers, cleared, and IR'd we pulled him back up.

If you guys see anything otherwise in regards to Boyce or another addition let me know and I'll change it.

My only wish RIGHT NOW as far as roster cuts go is I want nothing to do with Ked Golston this year.  He's absolutely worthless in terms of skill.  I've learned my lesson in under-estimating Reed Doughty, but Golston for me has got to go.

There is a particular running back missing, cant quite put my finger on it. :)

Ah, so that would solve the Dorson Boyce debacle right there.  I'd call it a Shanahanian-slip because that's just how I feel about running backs these days lol... just the same, that's unexcusable and I apologize for that **** up.  This list took a hot minute, though... still trying to figure out what I was thinking with him when I skipped over lol.

Thank you for pointing that out.  We should be good to go now.

Redskins DE Adam Carriker (quadriceps) will begin training
camp on the active/PUP list.

Carriker has been unable to recover from last season's torn
quad. He "hopes" to suit up for Week 1, but his status is in "significant
doubt." "At this point, we’re really working on getting the range of motion back
in the knee," Carriker said. "Your knee is supposed to bend at, like, 130-140
degrees. Typically right now, it doesn't get there. We got to get more motion
out of it just to be able to play football, first of all, and then just to be
able to live a normal life and do things of that nature." Jun

I'm amazed IR is a thing at this point of the year.

What about preseason PUP?  Why don't the skins put RG3 there to temporarily clear a spot

Well, you pup someone then you can't touch them for six weeks.

You can PUP someone up until the first rep is taken at camp.  So if you participate in a rep in camp you cannot be PUP'd. Remember a couple of years ago we couldn't do that with the Comb?  He got on the practice field and someone sneezed on him and he pulled a hammy?  We had to IR him and allegedly he was ready to go in week 9 or something?

Wow... I'm not optimistic at all.  The minute I heard setback I started fearing two things... 1) he's not playing this season and 2) Ked Golston makes the roster.  I'm rooting hard for Brace or Merling to supplant.  Thank you for posting, I'll update next to his name.

My Dad met and talked to Tim Hightower today. Talked to home for like 30 min. He's coming back. Skins are gonna sign him. He says he's healthy. I'd think he'd have a real shot at making the squad if he returned to pure injury form.

I'd take him over Keiland Williams in a second.  But 7 running backs is an uphill battle for anyone not wearing #46.

I tend to lean towards the offense when looking at these things.

For me the interest on offense is:

1. I think the O'Line starters are set with Trent, Lich, Monty, Chester and Polumbus. Someone could maybe take that RT spot but from all we read its very much Polumbus's job to loose. So who makes it for the backup spots and can someone push for a starting job - going to be some intense competition here.

2. Do we keep 4 TEs and 5 WRs or 3 TEs and 6 WR's. That last spot might come down to special teams and Niles Paul get the vote on that basis.

3. Behind Alfred Morris there is a big log jam at RB for probably 2 roster spots. Thompson is probably getting one of those two spots and that leaves a lot of guys fighting for one job ....

At the expense of whom?

He's previously been outshone by Helu, Royster and the Butler. And now you're throwing two more highly regarded (by this staff already) rooks into the mix.

He's also a year or so removed from the ACL, and wasn't touched by anyone last season after failing to make the grade here.

I'm not certain of much, but THT not making the roster is one thing I will hang my hat on.

Hail.

Agreed.  He had to have some comfort with something the coaching staff said if he left Jax without a deal and flew up here and signed later that day.  Not saying it's in the bank, but I'm with you, it's certainly his job to lose.  If anyone supplants him at RT I give the early vote to Tony Pashos based on his past.

2. Do we keep 4 TEs and 5 WRs or 3 TEs and 6 WR's. That last spot might come down to special teams and Niles Paul get the vote on that basis.

Agreed.  And Eric Kettani is a wild card here.  If he shows well, we may have to make room for him at TE.  Niles is an animal on teams, no doubt, but I'm not penciling him in just yet.  He has a Secretariat-at-the-Belmont like lead right now in terms of the other TEs on the roster.  And WR gets very interesting when you have to play the balancing act.  Briscoe vs Lewis vs Henderson vs Stallworth, etc.

3. Behind Alfred Morris there is a big log jam at RB for probably 2 roster spots. Thompson is probably getting one of those two spots and that leaves a lot of guys fighting for one job ....

Agreed on Thompson.  Morris is a lock as a two down back.  Thompson is your package and screen guy/3rd down route runner.  That leaves one role... change of pace.  It's going to be difficult for Royster to make it in the early goings because he doesn't offer much in terms of change of pace running style.  Helu does big time as does Tristan Davis.  If we cut Keiland for Hightower that only complicates things here, lol.

I wouldn't expect to see much out of Jamison this year in the pre-season if we want to keep him.  I think the kid is for real and Shanny learned his lesson about over exposure of young talent with Alfred last season.

For competetions sake you bring him in for Keiland Williams.  But I agree he won't make the squad.  The numbers game is going to be ferocious this year.

I left him off initially.  He was pointing that out to me so I had to go edit it.

If you see anything that's wrong with it just let me know, or if you see anything that isn't there that you'd like added let me know too.  It's here for us to use as a tool.

Case in point, our list on the OP is correct, the one on redskins.com still lists Dorson Boyce at FB when he was release last week. :)

I for one hope Eric Kettani makes the roster. I'm not too optimistic, because how often do you see two fullbacks on any 53 man roster, but I like the guy.

Agree whole heartidly.  He's fast, too.  I think he ran in the 4.5's.  I'm hoping he pushes Niles Paul.  That's the only way I see him making it in.  So he'd have to have a Terrell Davis like hit on Special Teams, in other words...

Jeez I'm so tired of seeing his name.  Talk about man-crushes by our fanbase.  All I ever hear is how THT will be signed or that we should sign him.  Wish someone would sign the guy besides us so it will go away.

On a similar note, I hear Quinton Ganther is still a free agent. Even though we've got an awesome backfield spilling over with talent, we should bring him back because he wasn't entirely bad in the four games he started for us.

Right?

There's only so many ways to say it...

You typically have two or three types of RBs on a team (I think we'll have 3 this year):

Starter (brunt of the carries):

Candidates:

Alfred Morris (ding ding)

Evan Royster

Keiland Williams

Change of pace (gets a decent amount of carries 5-10 per game and they are supposed to have the exact opposite style of running that the starter has.  So Barry Sanders --- Power / Alfred Morris --- Speed and wiggle/etc)

Candidates:

Roy Helu, Jr (my vote)

Tristan Davis

Package Specialty guy  The fourth kind would be back-up... so basically another starter who could eat up a lot of carries... Royster would get this knod if we didn't draft Thompson and Jamison... but since we did, that tips our hands a bit.

Package guy can play on 3rd down or in certain packages designed to get him the ball in space.  Think Darren Sproiles or a young Reggie Bush when you are thinking about this type of player:

Candidates:

Chris Thompson (will win if he is healthy)

Jawan Jamison

I think you put Jamison on the practice squad (he can also serve as a change of pace guy) in case Helu gets hurt... and you start getting him ready for next year.  I wouldn't play Jamison much this year though, if he would've gone back to school for his senior year he would be an early round pick for sure.  So I'd rather not put tape of him out there.

----------------------------------

But I digress... there is no way Tim Hightower makes this team.  He won't supplant Alfred, he won't supplant a change of pace back like Helu, and the Redskins are not going to risk sneaking both of those rookie running backs onto the practice squad.  So one of them is going to make it.
