A source close to Washington owner Daniel Snyder on Tuesday denied the club is close to making a deal for Chicago linebacker Lance Briggs.

"Not true," he said.

Reports indicated that Washington is willing to switch first-round positions with Chicago -- sacrificing the sixth overall pick for the 31st -- to gain Briggs, the Bears' unhappy franchise player. But that's not true, either, said the source.

"That's just Drew talking," he said.

Drew is Drew Rosenhaus, the agent for Briggs, and it was he who escorted the Bears' linebacker to a table Monday night where Snyder was dining at the annual NFL owners' meetings. Also there, according to others, were Washington's vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato and Baltimore owner Steve Bischiotti.

Anyway, the source said, Rosenhaus said something about how much Briggs could do for the Redskins and suggested Snyder make a deal for him. Snyder responded by saying the Redskins and Bears should switch first-round positions to gain Briggs.

"It was innocent and meant as a joke," said the source, "but it's taken off."

Briggs last month was tagged as the Bears' franchise player, a move that prevented him from becoming an unrestricted free agent and that angered him so much he threatened not to play this season. That changed this week when Rosenhaus said Briggs would stay out the first 10 games of the season, then report for the last six to earn another year's credit.

That ploy hasn't worked in the past. When wide receiver Keenan McCardell attempted it in 2004, the Tampa Bay Bucs let him sit until trading him in mid-season to San Diego.

The Bears have insisted they will not act on Briggs' demands and that they expect him to play for them this season. In fact, team president Ted Phillips this week told reporters in Phoenix that Briggs turned down a lucrative extension last year and that the Bears notified him and Rosenhaus that they would consider protecting Briggs with a franchise tag if he remained unsigned.

When I get my news, I prefer it in the Bubba format: right to the point.

If this was all from a chance joke from Snyder, I still have a couple of questions.

Why did Snyder and Vinnie go looking for Joe to talk about it?

Or did they go to Joe to say "Hey you gotta hear this one"

Why did the Bears GM say he wasn't interested in the Skins offer, but would think about it?

Or did the skins call him and say, hey it was all a joke that got out of hand, and we didn't mean it. However we would be interest in him and your first and second rounder.

I suspect the whole thing is a lot of hype started by an agent to shake things up. Mostly to let the Bears know that there are other teams interested in him.

There is the possibility that a different team was interested in Briggs and Drew was mostly trying to up the price with this one.

I doubt we will ever know the true story.

I said it must have been a joke and Snyder was drunk my first post on it.

I think I lost sleep over this. I don't think it's gonna happen, but with the Skins, ya just never know- ya know?

Unless and until something actually happens, the smart money is on Drew, just being Drew.

Yeah that about covers it. SNAFU and SOSDD. As always in such situations, we're going to have to wait and see what happens to find out what's true and what's not,(patience being something we have alot of around here ). Hopefully, something more direct from the team soon.

Here's an interesting issue, and this may be a litte off-topic for this thread, but it begs asking: What ever happened to following up and doing research?

Do any of these writers actually do their own work or do the just rip each other (Len Fatassarelli, I am looking in your direction) and the AP off? Wouldn't it make sense to look into stories to ensure their vailidity before going off on a wild goose chase?

Hey, all of us diehard fans who live and die with our beloved REDSKINS...

have suffered enough...

But, when these games being played work out to our benifit...

and we make a HUGE draft pick at #6 or a nice package trade down and acquire more picks and still get a very nice selection in the first round...

Again, it will all be worth the sacrifice:)
