Trading Davis article.

Well, I personally feel no reciever is worth more than a running back. The RB touches the ball a whole lot more than a WR would in a game. So you can guess how I feel when I read one of the top 3 RB's in the league might be traded for a "shot" at a rookie WR. That is ludicrous!

I think Gaffney has tons of potential, but he still isn't worth trading Davis.

By the way, all these articles talking about Davis not fitting Spurrier's scheme seem premature. Does anyone really know if Davis can fit into Spurrier's offense or not? He may be a power back, but he does have good speed for his size. He also has shown he could be a solid reciever with the limited opportunities he's had.

I think Davis COULD be successful in an open offense. The question is: Does Spurrier think Davis can work in his offense. If he doesn't gravitate toward the "power back" scheme and he thinks he can land several pieces to HIS offense by trading Davis he's going to do it. It is risky, no doubt.

I have always been a fan of "smashmouth" football. I love it when a team lines up with no secrets and just says "Try and stop us." My fondest memories are of Hogs and power backs and Counter Tres and such. I love good defense. I like it when a touchdown means something in a game and, believe it or not, I get bored watching high-scoring shootouts against sorry defenses. So, that's what I like and that's what I've always liked.

STILL, somehow I'm not dreading a new look from my beloved Skins. In gameplan or in uniform. The old way hasn't worked in a decade+ now and it's time for an update. I will be patient. I will follow closely. I hope I will be rewarded with a better football team and some more memories to fondly recollect over futures beers (or Jacks on the rocks).

I think Davis is probably on the trading block as it's smart to see what you can get for him without going out and acting like you are trying to see what you can get for him. There are VERY few players I put on an untouchable list and Davis is not one that I do. He could command a nice price and if Spurrier was inclined to change the offense in a substantial way away from a power running game, it wouldn't be a dumb move to get what you could for Davis and strengthen yourself elsewhere.

I'm not advocating a trade here, but, I do understand where the thought comes from that it is a possibility. Though, I suspect you'll see Spurrier will want to create an offense that is something different than his Florida offense. He's already mentioned using motion to help create mismatches and read defenses, which is something he didn't do much in Florida because kids make too many mistakes. There will be distinct differences, I suspect, and I think we have to rely on what we know about Spurrier in that he is a very sound offensive mind and he probably will be able to figure out what the best way for his design to succeed within the existing structure.

Davis is a key weapon and a tough guy to lose if we do not get a proven guy in return. Now, would I trade Davis to the Lions for No. 3, then sign Barry Sanders and add Sanders, Henderson and, oh, say, gosh, Carr? You bet .

Does it say that the pick that we would get for Davis would be the one used to get Gaffney? I'm not sure. If we got #1-3 maybe we choose Carr, peppers, Harrington and Gaffney at #18. This trade could increase the chance to get Gaffney and another quality guy, but Davis for the #11,12, or 16th pick... ARE YOU OUT OF YOU MIND??? even with a #1-3 we need at least another second rounder if not another #1!!!

Trading the 3rd(?) best runner in the NFL for that little shows me how either misinformed the person posting the story is or how stupid our coaches are and how much we really need a GM.

If anything yesterdays game should have shown that finesse players don't equate to superbowl wins.

It's starting to sound like an if its fixed we'll break it scenario.

Every so called genius at the Head Coaching spot we had recently discount S Davis value then begrudgingly have to face the fact that their collective a$$es have to depend on him to succeed.

We trade S Davis for finesse, I'm going to bring back images of EJ Harris everytime the Skins fall on their faces.

a franchise running back touches the ball on what 30-40% of your offensive plays?

a pro bowl receiver touches it how much, perhaps 6 catches a game?

and someone here wants to trade Davis to pick up Gaffney, an unproven college player?

if you trade Davis and want a wideout, I want to see a Terrell Owens or Eric Moulds coming back the other way.

Gaffney doesn't appear to be that kind of talent from what I am reading.

[ February 04, 2002, 05:18 PM: Message edited by: bulldog ]

We diminish ourselves seriously if we trade SD for anything less than a #1 and a #3. No way do we trade Stephen to pick a WR with a top six pick.

Certainly, we should not consider a QB in the draft this year. QB should be addressed through F/A. We can and should get "our" Tom Brady with our first pick next year. Leftwich comes to mind or Ole Rexy boy, Simms, Manning or some others

We should draft a replacement for Stephen, (William Green, Boston College for example) and then use our pick at 18 to get the best DT available.

I would use our second round pick for the best OG available. Our newly acquired 3rd pick for the best WLB available. Our 4th pick for the best SS available. Our fifth pick for a fast flyer at WR. Our 6th and 7th picks for best available athlete but hopefully with one of those we could pick up a decent punt returner.

I'd pick up Olin Kreutz and Keenan McCardell, Tim Dwight or Az Hakim through F/A and would resign Westbrook to a fair but reasonable contract. Of course we resign Ki'Jana to backup Green.

In this scenario, if Steve Spurrier can create the chemistry, we can seriously contend for the playoffs and beyond next year. LaVar was right when he said we were just a few players away.

Oh, one final thing, hire a DC who will play our corners to their best advantage and who will feature an attacking defense.

Az Hakim is a finesse turf guy who will get broke in two in the NFC East.

We should draft the best Lineman in the first round or does everyone want to ignore we have only two starters on the O line signed and a total of 3 altogether under contract?

Stabilize the line and with the receivers we have now a supposed genius should be able to adapt his system to a Skaggs,Gardner,Lockett, etc.

I was one of those okay with trading Davis. However, if it is to move in position to take Gaffney, then hell nizzo. I envisioned getting Carr/Harrington and then a stud RB (#18) like William Green, along with picking up a 3rd rounder. This would make the trading of Davis make more sense and more tolerable.

This is more then a 1 year plan, so I don't want the Skins to be so intent on getting one of Carr/Harrington, that they mortgage the future.

I saw Gaffney and I saw Lynn Swann. However, I didn't think my heart other than Darrell Green, would be ripped from me, but the rumors helped me prepare myself. It hurts like hell right now, so I am going to go and have a good remaining work day and get plastered for the first time in years!

Maybe I won't give a sh*8 when I see such a player making plays the way Big Country was doing.
Maybe I get see a Lynn Swann or Charley Taylor move down the sideline or a crossing in your face move by Art Monk or Gary Clark or a surprise crunching block by Ricky Sanders or the fade in the corner route by the beloved Smurfs.

I won't ever forget what SD has done, though I welcome a change. I am not sure if I can get over it, ever. I will do my best, hopefully without the moonshine.

If Davis is traded for a very high draft pick, I'd than trade down to accumulate more and more picks. I'd trade down to the point where it would allow the team to pick up Safety Roy Williams and DT Ryan Sims in the First round this year and possibily pick up a couple of extra 3rd round picks this year. Go for a speed WR in the 2nd and 3rd rounds or possibly an edge rusher. I'd love the site of Bailey and Smoot outside in the secondary, Sims plugging the middle and Lavar and Williams just patroling the middle of the field and crunching people. We need more playmakers and Williams seems to fit the bill. Wishful thinking I know.

Well, two of the four teams in the East play on turf. So that should go to Hakim's advantage. He also had a good game in the Superbowl and quite a few teams should be interested in signing him.

I would still like to see the team address the needs of QB and WR through free agency this year and leave Stephen alone. I feel there will be better QB prospects in the next draft, why trade away our ONLY offensive threat for players that may or may not live up to expectations. And if anyone thinks Ki-Jana could be a good replacement for a back who lead the NFC in rushing yards two outof the last three seasons, think again. Even if Ki-Jana could last a whole season as a full-time starter, he still couldn't produce the way Big Country would.

I have been one of the many going on record in firm disagreement with trading Davis, for anything less than an amazing deal.

How many holes do you think we have on this team? If we don't solidify the QB position DIRECTLY through a deal for Davis, then there is absolutely no reason to even consider this an option. Trading Davis so we can land a stud receiver would be foolish in that there is no way you could even come close to guaranteeing the same kind of productivity from a wideout.

I MIGHT trade Davis for Marvin Harrison, but even that's just a maybe. My point is we're not going to get a better player than Davis for what we give for him unless we're talking about an upgrade at QB, which might be a good move simply because of the value of the position.

We have holes on the Defensive line, Interior O line, safety, and linebacker (all of which can be adressed inexpensively) and a potential hole at WR to go with our only SERIOUS concern which is the QB situation.

Anybody want to run down the laundry list of needs for Dallas? how about the New York Giants?

My point is, we have a lot of talent and a solid core of young or fairly young players. With a few judicious moves at our smaller holes and a successful handling at the QB situation, there's no doubt in my mind we can contend for the East next year without having to deal Stephen Davis to do it.

Another note, I don't trust this article. We all read it and it looks like it was written by a seventeen year old at two in the morning who's still half baked from smoking from a can in his back yard earlier that night.

I could write a heck of a better story than this one, and that's not saying a whole lot.

Besides, with a source like profootballnews.net (no offense to anyone involved with that organization) and quotes like "which were good for an for 98 yards and just over one touchdown every time he took the field. " how informed can this guy be?

So I guess there might be some legitamicy to the article. I wonder where it really originated, at fans.com where I found it or at profootballnews! Well, if Davis is traded, I hope we get more that just a low first round pick and something like a 4th round pick. It better be a 2nd round pick as well. I did think all along that Spurrier wants to bring in two receivers. They better be worth it, because I have a hard time seein Davis play anywhere else other than in Washington.

Only Dallas plays on turf. And I believe that is the only turf game we play all year in 2k2.

Philly has porto grass that they stitch together.

And the finesse turf guys would still have to deal with 8 games on a real field at Fed Ex.

We are a smashmouth team in a smashmouth division that plays in smashmouth weather, yet some how we want to forget we had two previous pass happy coaches one liberal the other ultra conservative and when they forgot about the running game we lost.
