Activist Fighting To Get Redskins To Change Name

Tuesday March 23, 2004 1:00pm

Washington (AP) - One of the activists involved in a suit trying to force the Washington Redskins (website - news) over their name says the battle continues despite efforts to delay it.

Suzan Shown Harjo and 6 others have been trying for nearly a dozen years to get the team to drop the Redskin name as one which is offensive to native people. She notes that since 1970, nearly two-thirds of the 3,000 schools with native references have dropped them.

Harjo is president of the Morningstar Institute, an Indian rights group. She disputes football's contention that dropping the name would be an economic hardship. She says children are the ones hurt most by offensive images.

A panel of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office canceled the Redskins' trademarks in 1999 on the ground the name disparages Native Americans in violation of the federal trademark law. But in October, a federal judge ruled there's not enough evidence to show the Redskins name is offensive. Harjo and others are now appealing, but she says no hearing has been scheduled.

It seems like a story like this comes out every year. I thought it was established that the name "Redskins" doesn't refer to the slang term, but rather to the nickname given by Europeans to Indians for the warpaint they used to make their skin look a vermillion color. Also, didn't we already conquer the Native Americans? :silly:

people complain too much, activists are alright at times, but people claim the name is racist. The name was made in reference to the red paint the natives used to put on for wars, not necessarily for their own skin color. Also, people shouldnt think its racist when its been around longer than most people imagine. How bout the Atlanta Braves, Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota Vikings is a slur against scandanavians, New York Yankees is a slur against northerners, the list can go on, but its pointless. This is all pointless and needs to be stopped now.

Most American Indians have no problem with the name.

It is a few activists that say save the whales and the spotted Owls etc. etc.

That do this crap.

Saw a comedian this week that hit the nail on the head. if it was up to these people there would still be dinosaurs roaming the cities.

I love when people throw numbers out there to impress...

"Nearly two-thirds of the 3000 high schools with the name have changed."

two-thirds of 3000 is 2000, which simple math tells us 1000 still remain... and since it says "nearly" 2/3 that means there are over 1000 schools still with the name... Get over it.

would you rather be the cleveland indians, with a safe name and a questionable logo:

or a nickname that is either offensive or fine (depending on whose interpretation you believe) and an honorable logo:

or should they all be thrown out, along with the Celts, the Braves, the Chiefs, etc. etc...
