Always A Commander Never A Captain Posted April 27, 2023 Share Posted April 27, 2023 Our OPS breakdown is weird. Team slugging is 2nd worst, but on base is right at league average. We've hit the fewest HR's in the league, so that makes sense. But we're also only 24th in steals. You'd expect us to push it more while we're on base to make up for the lack of slugging. But maybe our roster is just too flawed still. I don't know if the Lerner estate wants to spend money in FA to bring in better batters, but the team does have a path forward to get better in 2024. TheGoodBits Posted April 27, 2023 Share Posted April 27, 2023 Hunter Harvey and Kyle Finnegan are under contract through 2025. Mason Thompson is under contract through 2027. Once we add this year’s draft pick we could have a stacked top of the rotation for the next 4-5 years (and it’s not hard to add in a #4-5 guy via FA or slot in another prospect). Nats big issue is they are really short on middle of the lineup bats. The offensive talent that has been acquired in recent years is at least 1-2 years away from the big leagues. Even then none of them are guaranteed. And it is hard to add a lot of really good big league ready offensive talent via trade/free agency.
