Seattle Times: Ken Howard, ‘White Shadow’ actor and union leader, dead at 71

LOS ANGELES — Ken Howard, the strapping character actor who starred in the 1970s TV drama “The White Shadow” and was serving as president of SAG-AFTRA, has died at age 71.

The union announced Mr. Howard’s death Wednesday. No cause was given.

Damn shame. I thought he was older than 71 - which is too young to die.

I've watched a few episodes of White Shadow on hulu.  I loved that show back in the day, it didn't age that well though.  RIP Ken Howard

By all accounts, a genuinely good guy in real life. RIP amico.

White Shadow was a great show for its time.   It was an honest and subtle drama about race relations and poverty and education and the difficulties growing up.

 

Welcome Back Kotter mined the same territory in a much more obvious and cartoonish way.

Amazing the impact that show had, considering it didn't really run for long. Of my age group, pretty much everyone remembers it.

I discovered The White Shadow very late, around 2005, mostly because Bill Simmons kept referencing it in his columns.  I enjoyed the show, even if it was a bit dated, but I couldn't get enough of the clothes, like Hayward's short shorts and cutoff shirt getup.
