engadget: FCC tells advertisers to CALM down, lowers the volume on commercial breaks

:applause:, though I DVR almost everything so the commercials aren't a big issue anymore.

Pretty soon, you won't have to scramble to lower the volume during noisy commercial breaks -- that's if you even watch live TV. After making its way through Capitol Hill, the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation Act (or CALM) -- which aims to keep the sounds coming out of your flat panel even-keeled -- has just been adopted in a ruling by the FCC.

Starting next December, ads and promos will have to remain in-step with the audio levels of scheduled programming. While the affected parties have a full year to get their acts together, the main burden of enforcement lies with broadcasters and MVPDs like Comcast and Verizon FiOS. So, come next holiday season, you'll be able to tune in and tune out without being blown away.

Just a preemptive strike. Regulation of the airwaves has never been subject to pure free market principles due to the problem of shared, limited bandwidth.

Probably shouldn't have been so snotty. I got weak.

No worries.

Not to derail, but I wonder how far off we are from major bandwith issues. I'd suspect not far.

But on topic, this is a GREAT development. I don't know a single person who isn't annoyed by commercial volume.

this problem even affects computers I believe.

Sometimes when I'm watching Hulu i'll have it a good volume then all the sudden BAM it's a commercial that can be heard throughout the whole house.

the regulation wont effect online tv but this will...

$25 and it hooks up to any AV device to keep volumes even.

Yeah the online commercials are very loud. Too bad this won't regulate it.
