This Day in Music

Born on this day 18th Oct in 1926, Chuck Berry, American guitarist, singer, and songwriter, and one of the pioneers of rock and roll music.

If I were Chuck Berry, I’d be a bit cheesed off. Although musicians like Keith Richards, John Lennon, Roy Orbison, and so may others have always cited Berry as a major influence, he’s never really received all the credit that other rock and roll stars have. Let’s face it, we all call Elvis Presley the King of Rock and Roll, but maybe that title is Berry’s? Chuck has the slightly boring title of the Father of Rock and Roll. Now, nobody wants to be known as someone’s Dad.

On this day 19th Oct in 1985, A-Ha went to No.1 on the US singles chart with “Take On Me”, making them the first Norwegian group to score a US No.1. Let’s face it, coming from Norway with its population of just a few thousand (well, just a bit over four million), this was some achievement.

So, in other words, not much happened today

~Bang

'66: The Yardbirds, with Jeff Beck on lead guitar and Jimmy Page on rhythm guitar, arrive in New York City to start their first American tour.

Today the song "Take On Me" by A-Ha topped the charts and stayed there for a week. (1985) :silly:

Lou Reed is doing some crazy record based on a german play with....Metallica. Coming out in about a month.

Unless you are a huge Lou Reed or Metallica fan don't waste your time with this one. I heard a track from it a couple of weeks ago and it stinks worse than the Skin's and Raven's offenses combined.

The Rolling Stones & Ed Sullivan never really got along together . . . The Stones were to perform “Ruby Tuesday” and “Let’s Spend the Night Together” from their soon-to-be-released Between the Buttons. But CBS and Sullivan insisted that Mick change the then-controversial lyric to “Let’s spend some time together.” The band balked, Ed issued an ultimatum, Mick went on a verbal rampage, and then finally did as he was told when it came time to perform live … but not without exaggerating the line and rolling his eyes each time he sang it.

The times sure have changed, "Let's spend the night together." was considered controversial.

On 26 October 1970, a wake was held at the Lion's Share in San Anselmo, California to celebrate the life of Janis Joplin. The singer who died of an accidental drugs overdose had left $2,500 in her will to throw a wake party in the event of her demise. The party was attended by her sister Laura and Joplin's close friends. Brownies laced with hashish were unknowingly passed around amongst the guests. Joplin was cremated in the Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Mortuary in Los Angeles; her ashes were scattered from a plane into the Pacific Ocean and along Stinson Beach.

And, slightly less significantly, on this day in 1971, Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident, robbing the world way too early of one of the greatest guitarists of all time.
