Drafting an First/Early Round RB

You can get Elite runningbacks almost yearly in the 1st round. You can get great to elite runningbacks in the 2nd round. You can get good runningbacks in the 3rd and 4th. You can get average and slightly below average runningbacks in 5-7.

They literally grow on trees.

Linemen and quarterbacks don't. The great ones are often exclusively available in rounds 1-2. Spending a top draft pick on a player with a low shelf life, and replaceable talent is, in my opinion, a horrible idea.

Example: Adrian Peterson ran for 1300 and 1700 yards and a combined 22 touchdowns in his first two seasons. Their offensive line has been superb and the defense is great up there in Minnesota. The quarterbacks were also Jackson and Frerotte. The Vikings went 8-8 and then 10-6 before losing in the playoffs. This year they acquired Brett Favre. They are 9-1 and probably will be around deep in the playoffs. Of course it's Brett Favre and people would say BU---BUT HE'S A HALL OF FAME QUARTERBACK!!! Yes he is, but my point is a team like Minnesota had all of the ingredients- a good defense, an excellent offensive line, and even the best runningback in football. What did it take for the Vikings to be legit powers in the NFL? A great QB.

I'm just sayin.

It's a fact that there are maybe 2 premier O-line guys you'd take in the the top 5 every draft and then there's a huge drop-off in talent. There may only be one this year, Okung. It looks likely we are drafting 5+ because of Detroit, St Louis, Tampa, Cleveland, Oakland and maybe KC or Seattle. Okung is likely to be gone by our pick. That would leave OL for the later rounds.

It's more likely we draft a skill player. I agree with Old Fan about the risk-reward being lower-higher on RB's but think Shanahan goes QB. He seems to have a knack for low round RB gems and won't waste our #1 on an RB.

Bingo! That should be the theme of the Redskins 2010 draft. We should not reach for OL. You do not have to spend 1st and 2nd round picks to build a quality line. To be honest, if you spend more than two 1st round picks on OL, then your team payroll allocation is probably screwed up.

People saying we need to grab a center in the 2nd or 3rd need to answer this question: Who? This is a terribly weak draft class for OL. There is only one legitimate LT prospect (plus he's not exactly the best LT prospect ever) and there are no interior linemen worth taking in the 1st.

Grab BPA with consideration of need in the first couple of rounds. Go OL in the middle rounds. We need depth.

It's quite simple, either we pick the best OL available with a high pick or if none are likely, we trade away our 1st round pick for multilple 2nd/3rd round picks. When was the last time THAT happened? The concept of *gasp* building for the future. Look how much beefing up our Defense did for us this year.

I swear our team is retarded, when was the last time we saw our oline get hurt and performance dropping dramatically? Thats right last year. We cant really say we didnt see this coming or it's a fluke year, because we dealt with all of this **** last year and did jack **** to manage the risk of it happening again. Apparantly it takes us wearing our players into their near graves before we do something about our aging, injury prone oline.

if we draft a runningback with our first pick then we indeed solidify ourselves as the dumbest organization in the NFL. We had a fluid running game with ROCK CARTWRIGHT and QUINTON WHO THE HELL ARE YOU GANTHER today. As long as you have a RB who doesn't fumble every other play then this position is easy to fill.
