A follow up from PFT:

Following an unconfirmed report that they’re about to sign University of Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford, the Detroit Lions have emphatically shot it down.

According to Tom Kowalski of Mlive.com, team officials have denied the reports from The Oakland Press and NFLDraftBible.com.

“That report is absolutely untrue,” Lions team spokesman Bill Keenist said.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that the Lions still won’t wind up drafting and signing Stafford.

The Lions are trying to sign their No. 1 pick before the draft and are in talks with Stafford, Baylor offensive tackle Jason Smith and Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry.

Yea i know this system of Rookies getting mega-deals is absurd and has to stop.

Yep. Rookies need to have some sort of salary cap or something. Or put a set amount for each round. Example, if you're a first rounder, you get 3 years $15 million. 2nd rounder, 3 years $10 million and so on. And if the team that drafted/traded you, at the end of that contract, if they want to resign you to a bigger deal, go ahead before another team. Sort of like the restricted free agency, but different. :2cents:

NFL.com reports that the Lions are in "final negotiations" with Matthew Stafford on a deal that will make him the No. 1 overall pick.

A deal could reportedly be completed by tonight. NFL.com's Steve Wyche says Jason Smith is the Lions' "second option" if no deal with Stafford is reached. If Stafford is the pick, Wyche adds that St. Louis, picking No. 2, hasn't ruled out taking Aaron Curry or Mark Sanchez instead of a left tackle. The Rams reportedly like what they've seen from Alex Barron this spring.
