I'm all for donating loose bills and change to people who are in need like homeless people, funds for volunteer firestation, church sponsored funds, school car washes, etc.. However I'm a bit confused about this one..

I drive around and I see these people (hispanic looking females) soliciting on VARIOUS intersections.. I can probably name 3 off the top of my head all w/ the same story, I also see them on the metro (maybe the same people) all passing out the same laminated cards stating that they have a family member in the hospital (probably husband). They have a few kids.. and they need cash for medical bills.

They don't say anything to you, just walk up to however many people they can pass the cards to, [dare i say victim?] reads it pulls out cash, hands it over w/ the card back, not a word said.. just a simple smile (if that). It seems like a pretty routine system.

On my way from work, I see more of them on 2 seperate intersections w/ homeless signs stating they have kids and no home.. etc.

I chalk refer to them as a single group b/c they seem to have the same attire on, jean skirt to their feet and a long sleeved top -- very conservative.

Is this some sort of scam? Are they really homeless? The ones I saw today had pretty cleaned clothes on -- which I find a bit odd.

Have you ever noticed this too?

I think I've seen this same "scam" (no idea if it's real) on the metro - on the orange/blue line downtown Saturday evenings. Both times it was the same chick wearing a long jean skirt, and the card said she had a sick husband or something like that. She walks up the car handing out the cards, then back down to collect them back.

haha thats funny. Yea its kinda a scam. Probably a family. Its whatever, the 'homeless' people around where I live have shifts, I swear. I've seen one guy come and one leave on a couple of occasions. Its hilarious. They are like "whatsup?" and one guy leaves and the stays. hahaha

They do this on the Vegas strip but there they hand out porn pamphlets as they slap them with rhythmic skill. It's all a scam.

Hey, I'm from NY and we have similar things going on up here too... We get theh story about the baby needing formula and the stranded traveler who will ask u for ur address so they can return the money to you... lol We got some creative one's here in NYC... a lady has come on the train for as long as I can remember and played this same drum laced and lined with duct tape singing "it aint no joke for real I'm broke"... One Chinese guy isn't even homeless or pretending to be and he gets on playing the theme song for the godfather on his accordion. lmao one kid probably in his late teens to early twenties puts on some jungle music and starts break dancing in the train car... funny stuff. groups of old men get together around christmas time and sing christmas carols for cash... one lady gets on and raps(doesnt sound good at all though). lol its too funny

Our musicians hang around Verizon Center. After Caps games and what-not. There used to be a guy with a drum-set made out of buckets and could put down a pretty nice beat. There's a saxophone guy at the metro-entrance to Verizon usually before the games. Sometimes there will be a few brass instrumentalists playing a repetitive up-beat tune that they can just keep going.

The majority of pan handling scenarios are scams. If they can't speak English when they ask for your money, then yeah, it probably is.
