@DCGoldPants
So, we get reports of him going back the minors, we get reports of him don't nothing like that. The Skins are playing it smart by keeping their mouths shut. so.... What do you all think will happen? My guess is that he if he does try the minors again, he won't make the majors and will try to work out a release deal with the Skins. next? gbear
I think the Skins will cut him. I think we'll just swallow the signing bonus, getting nothing back. It's not what I want to see, but as camp nears, I think the team will try to minimize the Sanders distraction. That mean cutting him. It's one thing to hold onto him while it doesn't hurt t odo so, but it's another by the time the draft picks absolutely have to be signed. Grrrr. I'd still like to see him ride the bench to earn his new "pine time" nickname. I'm just not usre how long that's in hte best interest for the Skins. bulldog
I don't know now. I am sure when Marty says he likes the team as it enters camp, he can't help but be tempted by what the team can do with $3.5 million in cap room for 2001 in adding a veteran or two on the defensive line and at running back for the season. Regardless of what others say, I think a backfield of Bailey, Smoot and Green together with Greer or Harrison in the dime can be a very productive one. We currently don't have an NFL caliber backup at DE or RB and that has to be a concern considering how few backs make it through 16 games healthy and how old our DE's are. Figuring that we will take the cap hit for Darrell and Bruce most likely in 2003, it may make sense to take Deion's hit in 2002 and not delay it. Personally, the money aside, I don't want to see Deion back in a Redskins' uniform. It is not enjoyable to watch him play football here as his comments have made clear how much disdain he has for the city and the fans. In addition, his play at CB and especially on punt returns, was a big disappointment, considering his constant trash talking and self-promotion. I just can't see us going through another year where Deion is waving his arms toward heaven and taking all the bows on the field, while Champ Bailey gets to match up with all the #1 receivers we face and Deion needs help from the free safety and third corner to stay on his man during the course of the game. The guy is an empty shell, the magic is gone.
Buddha
I predict that he will team up with Inspecta Collecta on those 1-800-COLLECT/1-800-CALL-ATT commercials. Cskin
I say nothing happens until the week that camp starts. PineTime will either be mired in the minors or without a MLB club at all. Schott will approach him about his plans, and suggest he give back a pre-determined amount of the bonus and be released, or...come to camp and compete for a spot...with no guarantee of making the club. Marty will tell him he's going to have to make the club "the old fashioned way......he'll have to EEEAAAARrrrrnn it." This will infuriate Deion, having to come in and actually WORK to play....so.....he'll negotiate a settlement and be released. Then...he'll go on T.V. and say it had nothing to do with the money....that Deion just wants another ring and that he felt the Redskins weren't the team to give it to him. So...we'll save 3.5 mil of cap space, plus... Dan will get a good amount of his bonus back. Remember, no camps or schools between now and July 29th... so we aren't in a hurry to do anything. Also...we're likely to pick up a serviceable RB or DT within the training camp days anyway. Just my theory.....
NavyDave
I say keep him and force his hand on this. A hostile work environment ie fans calling you slimetime constantly up in camp Marty and at Fed Ex can change a players outlook. The key would be the media backing off and let marty be the focal point in this episode. We can keep slimetime on the team cut him before june and take the hit in 2002. I want the b@st@rd to be put in his place. I still have this dream of us going deep into the playoffs and slimetime is deactivated for the big dance and we win convincingly against the Ravens. ------------------ Dave
bulldog
what is really ironic about this entire sorry story surrounding Sanders is that he is making all this noise to get out of DC to go somewhere else like Denver or the Raiders because he feels they are closer to winning....... while with the way the NFL surprises year to year, the Redskins are likely to have a bounceback year in 2001 and finish with a solid record, perhaps equalling these other teams. that would be the biggest joke of all. @DCGoldPants
FROM THE MOUTH OF SPORTSTALK 980: Deion's agent said that if Deion isn't in the majors when camp starts that he will report to Skins training camp....period. Kinda blunt eh? I wonder if it's a trick or if he realizes that he's all out of options. ------------------ Pootie Tang whoop your ass so bad, you can write it off on your taxes! KMP
Deion will either have to pay the Redskins a prorated portion of his signing bonus in order to gain his release from the Redskins or he'll be in uniform in Carlisle. ------------------
redman
Bufford- it's not surprising that Deion's agent, Eugene Parker said it that bluntly. So far, however frustrated we've been at Deion as Redskins fans, he has played by the rules of his contract. His contract explicitly allows him to play baseball and he's done that. The last thing Deion's going to do is break a formal agreement that he has so that the Redskins can portray him as the bad guy and "win" this dispute. He'll negotiate the terms of his release from the team either before or after reports to training camp per the terms of his contract. ------------------ "Loosen up, Sandy baby. Henry
Of course he'll show up to camp if he's out of the majors. Then on the second day he'll suffer some mysterious back, toe, hamstring, knee or whatever injury to go along with his wounded ego. Every week we'll hear the Deion Report stating he's testing it out and he might come back this week, yada yada yada. Next thing you know it's week 10, he hasn't played a down and we've been paying him 3.5 mil to do nothing ... just like he predicted. ------------------ Hail to the Redskins! Monkey
From what I understand, though, that 3.5M would not count against the cap since he'd be on the IR, not part of the final 53-man roster, and he'd not be able to play for anybody else unless we cut him. Any cap gurus that can confirm this? That's the leverage we'd have for a negotiated release. I really don't care about the real money since it isn't mine, but it is galling. They would want to cut him because in '03 we'll probably be dealing with dead money from Smith and Green but I'm not sure how much. Montilar
Cskin, the politically correct term is "philosophical differences" between he and the coaching staff. (i.e. I have to EARN my spot!!! But I'm slimetime!!)
88Comrade2000
Navydave, I hope you are prepared to say goodbye to DArrell Green then. If Deion stays on the team this year: Darrell will be either cut or forced to reture. Darrell and Deion will not both be playing for the Skins.
NavyDave
Doubtful that Darrell Green will be cut. The potential backlash from fans and the local media would be something marty would avoid especially when we know mercenary sanders would be cut after season anyway. Why can't we keep 6 Corner backs? Injuries are bound to happen and they can definateley help out special teams and after this eason our two veteran corners wouldretire and be released thus giving us 4 young experienced corners ------------------ Dave
joe
I will go out on a limb here. Deion will play for the Redskins, and he will play well. Baseball obviously did not pan out for him. For all of his bombastic behavior, I do not believe that he has ever failed to honor a contract. He may have lost a bit of quickness, but he had it to lose. As far as having to cut Green to keep Sanders, I don't see it. I only count 5 corners that we would have to carry and I see no reason why we could not. Sanders, Green, Smoot, Harrison and that free agent that we picked up whose name escapes me. Who am I missing?
Henry
Um ... Champ Bailey? ------------------ Hail to the Redskins!
Terry
Yeah, that's 6 corners, but we might be able to keep them all. We'll likely keep 10 O linemen, 4 RBs 3 QBs, 6 WRs, 2 TEs, 8 DL, 6 LBs, 5 S P, K, Snapper That's 47. So we can keep 6 CBs to bring us up to 53. And there's every chance that we might have only 9 OL, 7 DL, or 4 safeties (although that tends to be a good position for teams guys, so you're likely to keep a full complement). Dirk Diggler
i don't know about those #'s. I say 4 safeties instead of 5. 7 linebackers, 3 TE's, and 5 wideouts. you don't need 5 safetis--- i'd much rather go with an extra corner. BTw, what is the breakdown on most special teams coverage units? Something like 4 DB's, 4 linebackers, 2 Rb's and the snapper? Usually a lineman or 2 gets sprinkled in there but I'm not sure where. Art
I think we wait until July 29, and at that time, we'll see what we can work out with Deion. I suspect he won't be in the majors at that time, but, if he is, it will obviously force our hand. If he is, we'll probably have to cut him. If he isn't, we'll negotiate him out, or, force him to play. We can easily keep six corners. ------------------ Doom is in the box.
bulldog
look, right now the Redskins have 2 defensive ends. We have ONE defensive tackle that has proven he can play full-time at a credible level. And we are talking about keeping Deion and carrying 6 cornerbacks? You can have 4 pro bowl corners back there, but without a pass rush or a line that can stop the run, it is all going to be wasted. While the money situation dictates we cannot cover all bases with solid veterans or high picks, we can't just say, "oh well, let's load up at receiver and cornerback and go with scrubs on the defensive line behind Smith and Coleman and at tailback behind Davis"................ that would be very stupid indeed. Terry
Hey Dirk, I just put up those numbers to show that 6 CBs isn't unreasonable. The actual breakdown by position wasn't as important as the overall numbers. And as I tried to indicate, safety is one of those positions that might carry an extra guy because of strong teams play. Art
Bulldog, I'm sure no one here disagrees that we need some help along the defensive line. But, you have to come up with a coherent plan for spending the Deion savings. Who are we going to go after with the $3.5 we save? We can't just cut Deion to go after the imaginary defensive lineman. We need to have a plan. I'm certain the Redskins will cut Deion if someone worth a lick comes available along the defensive line. But, unless we have guys in mind, there's no need to cut Deion. ------------------ Doom is in the box.
