The Rams have chosen Steve Spagnuolo as their new head coach, the team announced officially on Saturday evening.

He will be introduced at a news conference on Monday at 11 a.m.

Spagnuolo, the New York Giants defensive coordinator, and the Rams agreed on a four-year deal only hours after Dallas offensive coordinator Jason Garrett departed St. Louis following his one night visit.

Spagnuolo was believed to be a favorite of ownership after an impressive presentation and interview in Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon.

Rams owners Chip Rosenbloom and Lucia Rodriguez along with senior adviser John Shaw, general manager Billy Devaney and director of player personnel Lawrence McCutcheon were part of three interviews this week involving Spagnuolo, Garrett and Minnesota defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier.

After those interviews concluded, Devaney made his recommendation to ownership. That recommendation as it turned out, was Spagnuolo.

“We considered some very qualified and outstanding candidates for this position but we kept coming back to Steve Spagnuolo,” Devaney said.

Rosenbloom said he was in agreement with Devaney after all of the hard work his general manager put in to find the right candidate.

“On behalf of Lucia (Rodriguez), Stan (Kroenke) and me, Billy did a spectacular job of presenting some fabulous candidates,” Rosenbloom said. “We’re very excited that Steve will be our head coach and are looking forward to an exciting season.”

In his two seasons in New York, Spagnuolo’s defenses have earned a reputation for a fierce pass rush combined with exotic and creative blitz schemes. With the likes of Michael Strahan, Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora at his disposal, it wasn’t a major surprise the Giants defense had such success rushing the passer in 2007.

This season, the Giants played without a retired Strahan and lost Umenyiora to injury before the season. Spagnuolo’s unit still finished the season ranked fifth in defense, allowing 292 yards per contest.

New York’s front four was so dominant in 2007 and in the playoffs, that it earned Spagnuolo a raise to about $2 million a year, making him one of the highest paid assistants in the league.

Spagnuolo is well respected and liked by his players for his ability to take into account their thoughts, adjust his game plans accordingly and resistance to point fingers when something goes wrong.

Considering Spagnuolo’s history, it’s not surprising that his defenses mirror his personality. Spagnuolo cut his teeth under legendary Philadelphia defensive coordinator Jim Johnson for eight seasons as a defensive assistant, defensive backs and linebackers coach for the Eagles.

There, Spagnuolo, 49, learned the many exotic and creative blitz packages that Johnson has a reputation for.

Spagnuolo took those principles with him to New York, running a base 4-3 defense that emphasizes a variety of blitz packages and various other ways to create pressure on the quarterback.

“Steve has been on some outstanding defensive staffs during his ten seasons in the NFL,” Devaney said. “He represented what we were looking for when this process began.”

Born in Whitinsville, Mass., Spagnuolo played his college football at Springfield College where he was a wide receiver.

An east coast guy through and through, Spagnuolo developed a relationship with Devaney when the two were with the Redskins at the same time in 1983. At the time, Spagnuolo was a player personnel intern while Devaney was a scout.

A decade later, Spagnuolo was a scout in San Diego where Devaney was director of player personnel. That relationship combined with the Giants playoff run helped Devaney skip the preliminaries with Spagnuolo and advance him directly to the finalist round of interviews.

RAMS HIRE SPAGNUOLO

Posted by Josh Alper on January 17, 2009, 3:00 p.m.

Reports out of St. Louis were all over the place over the last couple of days, but the Rams have finally landed their man. Adam Schefter is reporting that the Rams have hired Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo as their new head coach.

Per Schefter, it is a four-year, $11.5 million deal.

That leaves the Raiders and Jets as the only NFL teams without head coaches and leaves Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier and Ravens defensive coordin

REPORT: SPAGS TO THE RAMS

Posted by Mike Florio on January 17, 2009, 1:54 p.m.

At a time when no one seems to know what the Rams will do by way of hiring a new head coach, Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch does.

Miklasz, a veteran of the Rams beat, says that Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is getting the job.

Spagnuolo will be the new head coach of the St. Louis Rams,” Miklasz writes. “The Rams and Spagnuolo are currently negotiating the terms of his contract and indications are that we can expect the announcement of the hiring later today.”

There’s no equivocation in the report. Time will tell whether it’s accurate.

Caution - If true it's all good. Garrett stays with Dallas spoiling Jerry's hopes and Spag's gets away from the Giants.

Right...it's being reported by the Rams Beat Writer...here is his post

NY Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo will be the new head coach of the St. Louis Rams.

The Rams and Spagnuolo are currently negotiating the terms of his contract and indications are that we can expect the announcement of the hiring later today.

At this time no news conference is planned for Saturday at Rams Park.

Spagnuolo' date=' 49, was the Giants defensive coordinator in 2007 and 2008 and came up with the game plan that resulted in five sacks of Tom Brady and a shocking upset of the undefeated New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.

Before that, Spagnuolo learned his trade under acclaimed Philadelphia defensive coordinator Jim Johnson, working as an Eagles defensive assistant from 1999-2006.

Rams GM Billy and Spagnuolo have been friends for many years and that relationship obviously created a trust factor that helped Spagnuolo feel comfortable about taking the Rams job.

Spagnuolo wowed the Rams' brass with a presentation in Los Angeles on Thursday.

Spagnuolo was born in Whitinsville, Mass. and attended Grafton High School, where he is a member of the school’s athletic Hall of Fame. Spagnuolo earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from Springfield College and a master's degree in sports management from the University of Massachusetts. He is a member of the Springfield College Hall of Fame. He's married; wife's name is Maria and she's a native of Philadelphia.

Congrats to Devaney and Rosenbloom.

Something that kinda assists in supporting it regarding Garrett:

Cowboys assistant head coach/offense Jason Garrett has left St. Louis without a contract, according to NFL Network's Adam Schefter.

Garrett appeared close to a deal when he flew to St. Louis late Friday, but he appears no higher on GM Billy Devaney's wish list than Steve Spagnuolo, Rex Ryan, or Leslie Frazier. The Rams have been intending to hire a coach before next week's Senior Bowl, but there's no guarantee that will happen now.

No the Cowboys are hoping Garrett is offered and takes a HC job elsewhere. That way they lose there obligations to him and can hire (supposedly???) Shanahan. Their maneuvers earlier firing their DC means a probable demotion of failed HC Son-of-a-Bum to DC.

What a dumbass. While the redskins FO sucks, rams FO is even worse. He was given the chance to come here, but he picked an even suckier front office. He's gonna fail there.

He's going to have A LOT more control in STL than he would have had here. He wouldn't have had much of a say (if any) here in DC.

So the rams improved their FO and we didn't. So I guess that makes their FO better than ours now?

Here's my problem with this: The RAMS???!! I know that Snyder is meddlesome and Vinny is clueless as far as personnel decisions are concerned, but the Rams are so far away from contending, it's not even funny. Don't get me wrong, I hope Zorn works out and they're not going to be in the Shannahan, Cowher, or Holmgren sweepstakes next offseason, but Spagnulo could have really built something here. I really hope the Rams get 2 or 3 wins next year and that the Skins crush them when they play each other as they should have this year.

Garrett isn't the problem in Pokeville

offensive personell and upper management are to blame

Nah. He's just as responsible as anyone.

He became very vanilla, very quickly.

Quality DC's like Spags, Johnson, and other quickly figured him out and he failed to adjust.

Not that he can't or won't in 2009, if he's still the OC. But with everything he was given offensively, a lot of the blame falls on him.

He was continually outcoached as the season wore on. However, my money is on him bouncing back nicely next season and resembling the 2007 Garrett. Not the 2008 one.

Didn't Spags refuse the Skins job? And he took the Rams job. So the Giants loss is tempered by the fact that the Rams job appears nicer than ours to a guy like Spags.

Well, playing in the NFC West rather than the NFC East in a major benefit. Considering that 3 out of 4 teams in the conference are fielding new coaches next year will make it a more even playing field. (Tho, those two other teams have a bit of a head start with them being with the team previously.)

Also, tho, remember that the Redskins didn't end up wanting Spags either, he got removed from the Lions candidate list, and reports out there was that he was demanding a lot as far as control goes.

Spags did a good job as DC. We'll see how he does as a HC.
