Redskins Make A Big Hire

(This is gonna read like a print edition news story, cuz, well, it is. Pressed for time to get this in the first edition of the paper. Will blog more on it Tues and Wed, but I hear nothing but good things about Morocco Brown, and this could be someone groomed for even bigger things down the road. Okay, here's the story)

The Washington Redskins will hire Morocco Brown to be the team's new director of pro personnel, according to league and team sources, completing the reshaping of the front office under new vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato.

Brown, a native of Hampton and a former assistant scout with Washington, replaces Louis Riddick, who was released recently from the organization. Brown has agreed to start work in Washington next month, sources said, and has informed the Bears of his decision.

Brown had been the assistant director of pro personnel for the Chicago Bears since 2001, earning a reputation as a bright prospect in their organization, league sources said, and someone the franchise did not want to lose. Brown becomes the third-highest ranking official in Washington's organization behind Cerrato and Scott Campbell, who was promoted to director of player personnel shortly after coach and team president Joe Gibbs resigned. Brown worked under Cerrato with Washington and has strong ties to the area.

The Redskins overhauled the coaching and organizational hierarchy after Gibbs's sudden departure, with Cerrato now the central figure in the football operations. Riddick had been with the team for seven years, Cerrato's longtime assistant, and Brown will now have a significant role in helping identify and evaluate talent throughout the NFL, as well as within Washington's roster.

Brown, whose father, Charles, was a former assistant football coach at Hampton University, was a linebacker for North Carolina State from 1994-1997. Brown did not play professionally but worked for the Indianapolis Colts after graduation and then joined the Redskins as an intern in 2000. With the Redskins front office in transition in 2001, and Marty Schottenheimer taking over both coaching and personnel duties, Brown left for the opportunity to assist Bears pro personnel director Bobby DePaul in Chicago.

Brown left an impression in Washington, however, and in a 2001 interview with WolfpackChicago, com (a website devoted to NC State grads in that area), he said that owner Daniel Snyder mentioned him by name during an organizational meeting following the firing of head coach Norv Turner during the 2000 season.

"The Redskins called a meeting and Mr. Snyder came to address the entire organization," Brown told WolfpackChicago.com . " They said there were two people doing an excellent job...Morocco and the janitor."

Brown's brother, Milan, is the head basketball coach at Mount St. Mary's in Maryland, and his brother, Marseille, was a collegiate athlete as well.

The Redskins are unlikely to hire a new college scouting director following Campbell's promotion, with Campbell slated to continue traveling to college games and overseeing the college scouts. So with Alex Santos promoted to a pro scout last week, all voids in the football ops department are now filled.

I'm more worried about this janitor now, did we extend him to a long term contract or did he hit FA?

JLC just posted "sources" are telling him that the Giants are currently "wooing" him, but he is willing to come back to DC if offered "the right stuff".

JLC doesn't make it clear exactly what he did when he was here before. Just that he worked under Cerrato.

Technically, I think the guy who shines the cleats works under Cerrato, but that doesn't make him qualified to take on Player/Personnel. A little information/background would help :)

Sorry, I appreciate the scoop Jason, but it would be nice to have some basic background info. It's actually kind of vague about what he did in Chicago, too. What does he mean that the Bears did not want to lose him? Why? What did he do specifically in Chicago for JLC to write that he was a rising star? Did the Bears make a counter-offer? If so, what was the offer? How did the Redskins lure him away? etc.

Dude. You're like, totally asking him to actually do some work there. You already know that no one at Redskins Park will talk to him. Hell, I would be shocked to find out that he actually had someone in the Bears FO talk to him.

Yeah. But they didn't cover the Redskins.

The WP's Sports section needs to turn their map rightside up & get back on track. Maybe we need a new ongoing thread. The Sourcerer Files.

The JLC bashing is getting old' date=' especially considering there is substantive news to dissect.[/quote']

Instead of whining about it, you could bring a little something to the table. Feel free to quote the parts of my post you felt were unfair and why. We could go from there. Or not.
