]']We didn't.... Spears was a 1st Rounder.

Did you mean Rogers over Ware? Or Rogers over Merriman?

He's probably thinking of Chris Canty. We drafted Manny White ahead of Chris Canty in the 4th.

There were some other good guys on the board at the time....Brady Poppinga, Kerry Rhodes, Todd Herremans, Darren Sproles, Trent Cole.

Oh well, guess they thought Manny could be a good H-Back/Fullback. Win some lose some.

Right. For that Manuel White, we got a Montgomery. Now while Montgomery hardly had the effect that Rhodes, Sproles, and Cole have all had, he's at least a pleasant surprise.

This draft is thick with guys who can push the pocket. Dorsey, Ellis, Laws, Dre Moore, and Red Bryant have all shown more or less ability in this area. The standouts being Dorsey and Laws in this area. Ellis and Bryant or more inconsistent while Moore has the physical ability and less production. This is a motherload of potential 6-sack DTs in one draft.

I've seen people give reference on this board to a pass rushing DT. Now I'm just wondering is there such a thing really? I mean who was the last DT that you've seen that was a sack specialist? Warren Sapp was a pretty good one, but he is was the exception to the rule. The fact is it's just not in the job description. Their job is to force the line back into the QBs face collapsing the pocket allowing usually for one of the speed guys to get after the QB. And more importantly their job is to dominate the LOS and play on the other side of the ball, maintain gap responsibilities, and allow the second level (LB) to run free and make plays for negative or minimal gains. So a pass rush DT to me means nothing, because as a whole in the NFL they don't largely exist and give me a run stuffer any day over a so called "Pass Rush DT"...Thoughts???

I think that you are confusing gap techniques (0,1,2,3) and the overall play of the DT.

There is a difference in the physical shape of a DT as well as the positions that they play on the LoS. What they do and how they do it depends on their skill set as well as their size. You won't have a 335lb DT playing a 3 gap as you wouldnt have a 300lb DT playing zero gap.

2 gap and zero gap (NT) are usually space eaters, taking on 2-3 men in the process and control the LoS not allowing running lanes to emerge.

1 gap and 3 gap players are very quick, athletic and are meant to burst out of the LoS between gaps and get to the backfield.

Hope that helps.

A 3 technique DT is considered a pass rushing DT. Anytime the DT is not playing on the Center the DT is considered to be rushing the QB or at least get pressure in the backfield. There's also a positional DT that lines up in the 4 or 5 gap to get pressure in the backfield.
