cyfar
Johnny Cash - Hurt (Reznor) :applause: Both versions are depressing but Cash's version had that sense that he was still going through what Reznor was singing about in the original. My other choices would be "Down in a Hole" or "Frogs" by Alice in Chains and Bush's "In a Lonely Place" (tricky remix).
Henry
Our song Synchronicity II is about two parallel events that aren't connected logically or causally, but symbolically." Ok. That's what I always thought. Good. I can sleep tonight.

I like Cash's version of this but I don't get nearly the same feeling I do when I hear Reznor sing it. Reznor sang it with pure desperation. Edit: This applies to the song on it's own. Accompanied with the video it's a bit more haunting.
f_trizzy
Knockin on Heaven's Door (Dylan)--If I ever have physical access to Axl Rose I will do to him what I'd do to Roy Williams except I'd use my hands. What about the Warren Zevon version. I find that one really depressing.
Lombardi's_kid_brother
What about the Warren Zevon version. I find that one really depressing. Considering he was literally dying at the time...yea. I love Zevon and I love "The Wind." And I can't listen to "Keep Me In Your Hear For A While" without crying. The most sarcastic, ironic, and downright funny lyricist ever in rock being that open and honest and real. It just kills me. Sometimes when you're doing simple things around the house Maybe you'll think of me and smile You know I'm tied to you like the buttons on your blouse Keep me in your heart for a while

Warren, Tom Waits, Ry Cooder, and Leon Redbone were among those who used to play every now and then at a little very hip club in ashland orgeon that I was close to. I'd seen them all there. One weekend during shakespeare festival all but Waits were there and jammed with terry bozio (missing persons then) and a bass player from a regional group. i missed it. now that's sad. Hunny
Agree with most of these, particularly Mad World. But to add on..this song isn't a "classic," in fact its new, and maybe I only think its sad because I'm a mushey girl but, Timbaland presenting One Republic's "Apologize" is pretty depressing to me. I'm trying to think of a sad Tom Waits song, but in all his songs, he sounds so darned pleased to be a miserable lonely drunk. Artie Lange on the Howard Stern Show had a funny Tom Waits story a few months ago. Apparently, they were in a movie together and shared a limo a few times. On the last day of shooting, Artie decided he could be a "fan" and told Tom "You know, I'm a huge Springsteen fan and his cover of 'Jersey Girl' is one of his best performances. What inspired you to write such a great song?" And Waits looked at him and sighed, "My wife's from Newark."
