I'll second Brick by Ben Folds

I hate country, but am surprised not much is mentioned here...

So I'll have to show how punk I really am and go with this mention too...

Tim McGraw - Don't Take the Girl

Johnnys daddy was taking him fishin

When he was eight years old

A little girl came through the front gate holdin a fishing pole

His dad looked down and smiled, said we cant leave her behind

Son I know you dont want her to go but someday youll change your mind

And johnny said take jimmy johnson, take tommy thompson, take my best friend bo

Take anybody that you want as long as she dont go

Take any boy in the world

Daddy please dont take the girl

Same old boy

Same sweet girl

Ten years down the road

He held her tight and kissed her lips

In front of the picture show

Stranger came and pulled a gun

Grabbed her by the arm said if you do what I tell you to, there wont be any harm

And johnny said take my money, take my wallet, take my credit cards

Heres the watch that my grandpa gave me

Heres the key to my car

Mister give it a whirl

But please dont take the girl

Same old boy

Same sweet girl

Five years down the road

Theres going to be a little one and she says its time to go

Doctor says the babys fine but youll have to leave

cause his mommas fading fast and johnny hit his knees and there he prayed

Take the very breath you gave me

Take the heart from my chest

Ill gladly take her place if youll let me

Make this my last request

Take me out of this world

God, please dont take the girl

Johnnys daddy

Was taking him fishin

When he was eight years old...

Johnny Cash - Hurt (Reznor)

:applause:

Both versions are depressing but Cash's version had that sense that he was still going through what Reznor was singing about in the original.

My other choices would be "Down in a Hole" or "Frogs" by Alice in Chains and Bush's "In a Lonely Place" (tricky remix).

I like Cash's version of this but I don't get nearly the same feeling I do when I hear Reznor sing it. Reznor sang it with pure desperation.

Edit: This applies to the song on it's own. Accompanied with the video it's a bit more haunting.

What about the Warren Zevon version. I find that one really depressing.

Considering he was literally dying at the time...yea.

I love Zevon and I love "The Wind." And I can't listen to "Keep Me In Your Hear For A While" without crying. The most sarcastic, ironic, and downright funny lyricist ever in rock being that open and honest and real. It just kills me.

Sometimes when you're doing simple things around the house

Maybe you'll think of me and smile

You know I'm tied to you like the buttons on your blouse

Keep me in your heart for a while

Exactly, knowing the circumstances it makes it all the more depressing.

Yup, agree with you and f_trizzy.

Warren, Tom Waits, Ry Cooder, and Leon Redbone were among those who used to play every now and then at a little very hip club in ashland orgeon that I was close to. I'd seen them all there. One weekend during shakespeare festival all but Waits were there and jammed with terry bozio (missing persons then) and a bass player from a regional group. i missed it. now that's sad.

Agree with most of these, particularly Mad World. But to add on..this song isn't a "classic," in fact its new, and maybe I only think its sad because I'm a mushey girl :silly: but, Timbaland presenting One Republic's "Apologize" is pretty depressing to me.

I'm trying to think of a sad Tom Waits song, but in all his songs, he sounds so darned pleased to be a miserable lonely drunk.

Artie Lange on the Howard Stern Show had a funny Tom Waits story a few months ago. Apparently, they were in a movie together and shared a limo a few times. On the last day of shooting, Artie decided he could be a "fan" and told Tom "You know, I'm a huge Springsteen fan and his cover of 'Jersey Girl' is one of his best performances. What inspired you to write such a great song?"

And Waits looked at him and sighed, "My wife's from Newark."
