SUNSTONE
A movie based on a true story about life in the slums of Rio De Janeiro. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSu4Xg4neTk I highly recommend this movie. It's like a brazilian version of The Godfather or Scareface type of movie. It's not american, and it's been out for a few years.
techboy
A book by a Christian philosopher and theologian. I highly recommend this book. It's not American, and it's been out for a few years.
#98QBKiller
Good call. I saw this movie a little over a year ago and it's one of my favorites. Very powerful story.
Duckus
This movie is usually listed in my top 5 movies of ALL TIME. There are very few movies that come even close to this in my book. This movie also sparked my interest in the development side of international affairs and was one of the reasons I moved from an International Politics degree to a degree in International Development. If you have not seen this movie before, leave work/school now go to blockbuster and take the afternoon off.

AsburySkinsFan
This movie literally caused me pain when I saw it, the scene where the boy is forced to chose still hurts me.
Tarhog
Thanks for the recommendation, I haven't seen it. I have a history of waiting years to see films everyone's 'talking about'.....for example, watched 'Lost in Translation' tonight. I have had a lot of people tell me they hated it. Don't get that - for starters, Scarlett Johansson is enchanting, and Bill Murray was great in it. Very subdued flick, but says more with less dialogue than any movie I've seen in a long while. Will definitely check out 'City of God'.
SUNSTONE
except much better, this movie is just flawless.... seriously how could it be better? I wouldn't say that this movie is better than those other two, but I wouldn't argue against it neither.
laurent
Great movie, I found it so engrossing that I didn't even notice that it was subtitled 20 minutes into it. Should be in everybody's movie collection.
