What NFL Rules would you change?

Yeah, I like that. Maybe make the rule 6 points to win? So either you have to get two field goals, or actually score a TD.

I never understood why they don't just play an extra fifteen minutes. Each team gets two time-outs and they play another full quarter. That way you have all the aspects of football: kickoffs, punts, offense, defense, field goals, and touchdowns, just compressed.

Also I LOVE Bubba's idea about the incidental and flagrant Pass Interference.

-- allow 53 to dress of game day

I've been saying this for years. - The NFL every year tries to figure out how they can makes games higher scoring and more exciting. - This would allow teams to have more specialists.

As far as PI - I'd say leave it like it is. - If it's 15 or 25 yards, then all a DB has to do when he's beat on a bomb is tackle the WR. - It'd be like fouling a guy in basketball.

...and my biggest one - the ref in the booth is the one who reviews the plays, NOT the same guy who made the call in the first place.

I know Peter King suggested a sensor in the ball to determine if it hit the goalline or not, but in reality the sensor could get screwed up during the game. What I would have done is set up more cameras around the endzone. Several directly above, a couple on each end directly on the goalline. Also, the refs should have an extra 30 seconds or so to review. Also, be allowed to challenge anytime, even if a whistle is blown or it's under two minutes, or whatever.

I was going to include this but decided to let someone else have a crack at it. A fumble, is a fumble, is a fumble. If that's the case, then all players could claim they were simply trying to "tuck" it away.

I agree with that - except all players could not claim they were "tucking" it.

The "tuck" comes from a judgement call on the intent of the QB, was he passing the ball or was he tucking it? I hate the rule, but lets not act like all players could abuse that rule, just QBs.

...oh yea, one other one...the extra point kick should be spotted at the 20 yd line, thereby making it a 30 yd attempt. I hate extra points because they are so damn easy...make it a challenge or get rid of it altogether.

That is a really good point. Nice idea. :applause:

I don't like any rule really protecting the qb. What is the point of saying this guy is more valuable than the other people on the field? If you are out there playing tackle football, then you should be able to take the punishment like everyone else. I would also get rid of the tuck rule as previously mentioned. What load of garbage that cost the raiders an opportunity and basically cost us a win last year in denver. The pass interference rule as stated before is just another way to boost scoring. Reduce the amount of yards that penalty is worth. Please refs call holding more than you do, as opposed to every 10 call it everytime you see it. It is very frustrating to watch as a guy on replay is clearly being held and the blocker is being praised by the announcer as doing a good job of blocking. Either call holding or get rid of it.

1) Remove the "no contact past 5 yards" rule, or rather, rewrite it. Let the players play, but if the contact is DIRECTLY involved in the outcome of the play, THEN call a penalty.

2) Change the IR rule. Let each team have a chance to challenge ANY call on the field, regardless.

3) Give each team 3 IR challenges per half, just like timeouts. However, for each challenge, regardless of the outcome, it costs that team a timeout.

I know this isn't a rule change, but I would actually like to see the League extend the season to 18-20 GAMES a season. If they remove 2 Pre-season games & add on 2 more weeks at the end of the season, it could make for a more challenging year. They could add an "intraleague rivalry" game or 2 (like us vs. Balt. or Oakland vs. SF or Dallas vs. Houston, etc.) which I think would add some excitement to the season. I know that that would change the way the league does things roster-wise & bye weeks & things of that nature, but I think it would make things more exciting. Anyway, I'm just spitballin' here.

EDIT: Oh yeah...4) every team gets a 2 Touchdown advantage against Dallas. :dallasuck

Having EPs from the 20 would be crazy. Nobody would ever go for 2. And I wouldn't like the idea of lining for 2 at a different spot than where you would line up if you were kicking. QBs and kickers have to be protected, when a Qb throws the ball, he is completly un-protected, and (should) only throw the ball when he knows he can get the pass off before getting hit. Especially with the ammount of money Qbs get paid and how big and strong linemen and linebackers are today, all of the rules that protect Qbs make sense. Even with the rules, they are playing the toughest position on the field with both thier minds and bodies.

one rule that I like, that I wish was taken more advantage of, is that if the ball touches a player on the team that punted the ball, but isnt downed yet, the recieving team has a risk-free shot at picking up the ball, just like if the defense goes offsides and the offense has a free play to throw it deep. I would love to see Santana run into a group of cowboys watching the ball and scoop it up right in front of them and start running.

I remember game a few years back (I believe it was the Rams) & the opposing team punted the ball & it went into the endzone, but no one ever called for a faircatch & the whistle wasn't blown. One of the receiving team players picked the ball up from deep within his own endzone & ran it back for a TD, while the punting team was heading to the sidelines.

Peter King suggested adding two games in his "if I were the commish" column a little while back. I'll say the same thing now that I did then:

Of course, I'm all for as much football as I can get. The problem is, though, that this is already a League where a lot of the top stars are lost to injury by the time the playoffs start. I wouldn't want the NFL to turn into a League where the Championship was basically won by the playoff team that was the luckiest at avoiding injuries...

The idea of an interconference rivalry game intrgues me (they could put it at the end of the season, like in college ball...), but I'm not sure I want the Baltimore fans any more uppity than they already are...

Oh, I've got another rule change...speaking of the end of the season, I think that every team should play it's last three games against divisional opponents. Assumng the interconference rivalry game doesn't come into being, of course...

Not sure if this one was mentioned...but I think a coach should be allowed unlimited challenges AS LONG AS HE IS RIGHT. If the refs screw up 4 or 5 calls in a half, why should the coach only be limited to 3 challenges? I think they should be allowed to continue to challenge plays until one goes against them.

If Gibbs is 5 for 5 in challenges in the first half...then so be it. He gets to keep going until he misses one...then you can say you are done for the game. But why limit the coach if the refs get the calls wrong?

I like this too...the only thing is you'd have to account for spot changes. I don't think anybody wants a league where the coach keeps stopping the game because he wants the ball moved forward a yard.

Wow, can you imagine the hoopla that rule would cause in Vegas? Now that would mess up some point spreads quickly. Oh, but wait the NFL doesn't owe any of its popularity to betting.;)
