  1. Nah, don't really care anymore. Haven't watched yet this season and don't intend to. I've gotten a few chuckles from the gameday threads here, and of course rooting for Snyder to go away is satisfying. Otherwise, it's just memories of better days I'd rather not tarnish by paying much attention to what it's become.
  2. I had just moved to the DC area a few weeks before this (despite being a lifelong Redskins fan), and watched this game from a local bar. Man, it seemed for that brief moment that the good times would never end and that I'd finally get to enjoy them close up. Ahh, that's life...
  3. The economics of the NBA are different. Sarver wasn't voted out, he was losing sponsorships and probably would have had a hard time keeping local TV deals etc. The revenue sharing in the NBA is not nearly as overwhelming as it is in the NFL. The NBA's national TV deals are smaller and less lucrative. Now, it *is* clear that the league office refused to go to bat for Sarver. Goodell and the other owners haven't even used their own bully pulpits to try to leave Snyder out on an island, let alone vote for a forced sale. It's interesting that the same "glass houses" argument for why the owners don't vote out Snyder also applies to the NBA owners. They have to know that every thing they've ever said in public or that can be verified is being scrutinized by reporters/bloggers/gadflies etc., and yet they still didn't close ranks around Sarver. Kinda puts the lie to that theory.
  4. As I recall, Bruce was hired strictly to manage the cap--to handle the business side of football operations, in other words. There was no suggestion that he would be picking talent while Shanahan was around. The fact that Dan kept Bruce around after Shanahan left and even promoted him into making football decisions is a far bigger indictment of Dan than iniitially bringing in Shanahan and Bruce as a package deal.
  5. They let Mark Davis have his team play in a far worse stadium for many years.
  6. Definitely. What Dan needs to come to terms with is that he now effectively owns a minor-league sports team, when it comes to attendance and "buzz." He needs to adjust accordingly. If he wants to rebuild the brand, he desperately needs local people in the stands, not visiting Eagles and Giants fans. And he needs lots of them every game. The immediate revenue is secondary. If he were even modestly creative, he'd give away the upper deck seats (yes, for free), charge way less for every other seat, and sell basic beer/hotdogs stuff for cheap. Add in family-friendly activities in and around the stadium, and make it so that actual middle-class families could go to a game and enjoy themselves even if the team isn't any good. The cigar-chomping defense contractor fat cats he was going after aren't there now and they aren't coming back anytime soon. He could be a trailblazer for a new model of how NFL teams operate in their local markets when they aren't hot stuff at the moment. Instead, he'll just reign over ruins and pretend he has an empire.
  7. I wouldn't have ranked the Rams that high or the Bills that low. I'd have to know the criteria used to understand this ranking system. Not disagreeing with Washington being last. I mean, the Commanders generate ZERO buzz around here now. Nobody's wearing the apparel, the games are attended largely by opposing fans, and nobody here talks about them at all. It's pretty amazing considering what it used to be like even just a decade ago.
  8. It's more convenient for a lot of people. That's the funny thing about this. Snyder already owns a prime piece of Beltway-adjacent land on which he could build a new stadium. He doesn't need to schlepp out to Dumfries or whatever to get a new stadium. I went down that way a couple times recently for the first time in many years, and the traffic is a nightmare. It was really bad when I lived there 20 years ago, and it's much worse now. The Dulles site makes more sense, but it too is a long ways from a large percentage of the local population. If he can't get a stadium site in DC, Snyder would really be better off staying at the FedEx site. He's just trying to extract money from taxpayers by trying to move further out into the exurbs.
  9. The best deal for Virginia taxpayers would be to not have us pay for Dan Snyder's miserable new stadium. Let St. Louis or San Diego deal with this jackwagon.
  10. Please don't tell me that some of you are tempted to try and kick that football that Lucy is holding. How many times have we been through this?
  11. Channel 7 isn't going anywhere. Given how few locals seem to care much about the Commanders (this is a Nationals/Capitals town, now), I'd say they need Channel 7 onsite a lot more than Channel 7 needs them. You just have to put up with the jerkish behavior until the equation changes. Not defending the reporter --to be honest, I haven't watched a local sports news segment here in probably 15 years--but drawing attention to it on Twitter (which reaches far more people) is just dumb. Mr. McKinsey & Co. should know better.
  12. This is exactly it. It's Public Relations 101. All Wright did was ensure that everyone watched this silly clip. Maybe that was his goal? There's nothing to be gained by picking fights with the local media. You know how you get rid of stuff like this? Start winning some games. The local media will turn into lapdogs really quickly if that happens.
  13. Based on the history of organized gambling in America, this could actually be a true statement.
  14. I wonder if the Dramatically Upgraded stadium includes working plumbing and intact safety rails.
  15. Heaven forfend that one should have to merely watch football at a football stadium. Given the on-the-field product lately, however...
  16. And you just know that's exactly what'll happen here if the leagues decides to "punish" Snyder.
  17. Might be a good time to kick back and watch some film.
  18. Back when I was younger and child-free, I remember not going to training camp in Ashburn because I didn't want to deal with the traffic and crowds. It's surreal to see no one there.
  19. This is EXACTLY where I'm at. I care very much that something I treasured as a young man has been despoiled by Snyder. However, I won't actively root against his current players or coaches. It's not their fault. But neither will I root for them, or even care that much about what they do. I come here to read/comment about the ownership situation, and maybe talk about the old days when they come up. If he goes, I'll reconsider.
  20. That's entirely possible. I'm not sure which it is. It could even be that I'm just getting older and moving on. I can say, however, that the systemic problems with the NFL aren't helping.
  21. This bears highlighting. Agreed 100%. I'm really over Dan Snyder and have zero interest in supporting or watching the Commanders as long as he owns them. Ten years ago, however, I would still have watched other games and followed the league generally. Now, I have very little interest, for all the reasons you list. That's not a commentary on the players or coaches, either. They're all amazing. The NFL has tinkered too much with what was a very good thing, and it's also gone too far to cater to the corporate high-rollers. I still like to think of it as the "blue collar sport", but that's a distant memory, now.
