  1. This is crazy but hear me out:

Patriots want Maye and have a draft day deal worked out with Commanders. Assuming Caleb goes 1, Commanders swap picks with Pats and Pats take Maye and sit him for a year. We get Patriots 2nd rounder and take Daniels. Wouldn’t be my preference, but interesting. Could work because you can actually trust Pats and Commanders since it’s one pick. Commanders could even take Maye and then trade him for pick 3 and second rounder.

I mean, there are really only so many running QBs in the NFL. So the pickings for guys who use their legs like Daniels is almost nonexistent. They may just really want a quality guy to be the bridge or backup, regardless.

And I can't even imagine how apoplectic Pats fans would be if they had a chance to draft a potential blue chip QB at 3 and instead kicked the can down the road and went with a career backup like Brissett.  :ols:

But there are a bunch of running QB backups out there. Tyrod Taylor, Mariotta, Tannehill, etc. Why take a pure pocket guy? You can’t have two totally different offenses. To me, this says they like Maye or someone like Penix.

I still think the Pats absolutely draft a guy at 3. Jones is gone and they need a solid guy to either be a 1 year bridge for the rookie or to back him up if he's good enough to start.

Yeah but I feel like it’s a totally different skill set from Daniels to Brissett. Change the offense next year? If it’s Maye it’s fine, but they can’t know that for sure.

Maybe they really like JJ or something. I’m not sure they go QB at 3.

    1. Draft Maye

    2. Keep Howell

    3. Open competition in offseason

    4. If Howell wins the competition, he's day 1 starter and Maye redshirts this year. If not, Maye takes the reins from the jump

Is that a good idea? Maybe not. But it's not the worst idea!

Unless Maye is so absurdly better than Howell in camp that it’s just ridiculous I would have Howell start first month or so for oline to gel regardless.

  4. The Lions are trading a 2024 third-round pick in exchange for Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Carlton Davis and two sixth-round picks, league sources told The Athletic. The deal provides immediate help at cornerback, giving the team a starting-caliber option as free agency kicks off.

I would have been in on that.

Naw, **** that, Sneed is a young blue chip CB. Hard as hell to find CBs in the draft that are worth a damn. Look at Jeff Okudah, dude was drafted #3 overall in 2020, now he's a bust, taking cheap one year deals. If you can get a young star CB for a 3rd round pick, do it.

For real. Draft some mid rounders to develop also but need great players.

  6. I love that Kirk got the bag.

QBs are still underpaid when you consider how important they are for team success, how marketable they are for teams, and how important they are for the NFL product. In a fair world, they would have a percentage of ownership interest and be paid twice what they make now, IMO.

Imagine if all the starting QBs went on strike? The NFL product would be brutal. It would look like the XFL.

As far as the draft, Minnesota is in dire straights and may look to trade up for a QB. Atlanta now out of the QB run in the first.

They actually tried to weigh him today but he was blown away by a stiff breeze at the last moment. Firefighters are currently attempting to get him unstuck from the branches of a local tree.

The firefighters tried enlisting Drake Maye to throw a football at him to knock him down, and every pass missed.

JJ McCarthy was brought in but couldn’t throw a pass because Harbaugh wasn’t there to call a play, and he couldn’t audible.

    Just a tragedy.

The eye test huh? You must be that guy at the carnivals that can just guess people's weight by just looking at them lol

Not sure if you’re just being purposefully obtuse, or you don’t watch much sports.

He looks like a ****ing cornerback, he’s not 215. He’s not 210. He played close to 200, maybe 205. He’s not big, at all.

Now we can argue about how weight doesn’t matter, which is cool, but there is no way he is adequate/average QB weight. If he was, he would have weighed in.

Parsons has said that he wants to be an Eagle and after the way theu picked up his 5th year, there could be an issue.

Yeah, it’s going to come down to what he wants because the money will be huge from anyone. Does he want to play for DQ, who he has said he loves? Or stay in Dallas (they ****ed up big time screwing him out of 3 mil, that’s bush league). Or play for his hometown team?

    5 minutes ago, MartinC said:

Slim chance Parsons hits free agency. If they can’t extend him they will likely franchise tag him.

If they FT him he will probably play hardball, especially if they try and say he’s a off the ball LB vs a QB hunting pass rusher. If I was his agent I would tell him to sit out the season and not play on the tag.

Frankly, I think the NFLPA will back him hard and it may go to arbitration. This is a 100% a hill to die on for them and for him. He’s one of the best players in the league and if you let teams play **** you games with him, all players are subject to contract games on the tag.

All the more reason to take him and sit him for an entire year. Put him on a nutrition/weight training plan and deactivate him for 10 weeks. Roll with Sam and see what he can do with Kingsbury. Daniels can focus on building up his body, arm and leg strength without taking a single hit. I'd even entertain dealing Sam and signing Brissett back if we planned on sitting Daniels for a year.

LSU has a pretty good weight program…

It’s not a lack of will, I just think he’s built like a CB and is a hard gainer. He’s just not going to carry a lot of weight on a narrow frame.

Something I think about with Daniels is, if he is able to get more lower body mass on his frame, will that help his arm strength as well?

I don’t think so. I mean, at his age I wouldn’t expect his arm to improve all that much and I don’t think his frame will let him put on much weight, if any. And I think his arm is good.

The bigger concern is that I can’t think of a single QB who has weighed 205 or less that has stayed healthy and had a solid career.

Whatever he weighs at, unless he runs also, subtract 10 pounds and that’s his playing weight. He’s been bulking up as much as he can the last few weeks.

Bough will be the “vet presence” for Maye/Daniels and Howell will be the backup.

If Maye/Daniels isn’t ready to start week #1 then Howell will and they can learn plenty watching him whether he does well or not.

Any questions from Maye/Daniels about “why is” or “why that” concerning all things QB play can be answered by Blough/Prichard/Johnson/Kingsbury.

There is no need to bring in a vet imo.

    Interesting point, thanks.

I tend to agree that FA QB list is eh, and I’d rather roll with 2 QBs. If they both get hurt it’s going to be a terrible season (but high draft pick) anyway.

  12. Potential backup QB fits (assuming some air raid/spread principles:

Colt McCoy (if he isn’t retired)

    Gardner Minshew

    Case Keenum

    Kyle Allen

    Mason Rudolph

    Kyle Trask (trade)

    any I’m missing?

  13. Giants would be a sneaky good fit because he can take less money (still paid by Denver) and Giants are stuck with Daniel Jones contract. Giants aren’t a bad roster either.

Pittsburgh would be a better football fit though, IMO. Not sure if his wife and Russ want to live in Pittsburgh, though.

We also desperately need an air traffic controller in the secondary, and I don't think that guy is on the roster today.

Should we be in on Justin Simmons? GMAP drafted him in Denver and he’s a stud. I hope we have one big $ signing like him or Hunter.

I am loving that he thinks its Biadasz. 26 years old, has always been a center and is damn good at it. The bonus is hurting your division rival as well.

Who is better Biadasz (DQ familiar) or Mitch Morse (Bobby Johnson coached)?

  16. 7 minutes ago, CTskin said:the issue is that when talking about this specific draft class, we’re absolutely forcing it if we take a qb at #2. This is FAR from 2020 with burrow, tua, Herbert. You take a qb at 2 when the value adds up, which it doesn’t for maye or daniels.

the high iq move is to trade the pick if the offer presents itself. The next best move is to take MHJ.

im still holding out hope that peters is capable of playing 4D chess and all the qb rumors are just to get a team hot and bothered enough to overpay for our pick.

If a player is a potential starting QB, which Maye and Daniels both are, it’s not a reach. There is no magical player worthy of #2 that is a better prospect AND his play will elevate others and effect the team as much as a QB.

This isn’t some trash QB class and we are taking a QB just to take one.

  17. More than anything, offense (which is heavily dependent on good QB play) is so disproportionately tied into winning in today’s NFL. It’s seen in the playoff teams each year and the superbowl champion is a team with an elite QB. It’s been YEARS since a defensive team won a SB with average QB play. Probably 20 years. We’ve had average QBs get hot like Foles and a aged Manning who won while not playing superb ball physically (still a HOF processor though). These are the outliers.

In light of this, is it fair to say offense is more than 50% related to team success? 60% offense, 10% ST, 30% defense? It’s a different game than than the 90’s for sure.

How much is offensive success tied to QB play? It has to be over 50% because great QBs can make the rest of the offense good even when the weapons and oline are average. The reverse is not true, if it’s poor QB play the offense fails. It doesn’t matter the weapons or the oline.

If you accept my premise (and if you don’t, I’d love to hear alternatives) If QB is 50% offensive success, oline protection/scheme is 30%, and weapons are 20%, how can we not take that into account in the draft?

If a QB accounts for 30% of team success, more than any other position or player, by far, how can you possibly justify foregoing QB (or finding lesser, cheaper QBs) to “build the rest of the roster”?

Reviting Keon Coleman. He was an original WR man crush for me that I've soured on but, I don't know, part of me still thinks he can be a star in the right system. And he's only 20!(turns 21 in May) His shaky combine showing means he might fall as far as the 3rd round where he'd be a heck of a steal.

It was pretty interesting when they showed him in the gauntlet drill- he was running straight on the line, plucking the ball with great hands and ran the drill significantly faster than other guys (they had his time clocked, I forget). He’s obviously not blazing fast but some guys just aren’t great at running a 40. He’s fast enough I think.

Maybe it's just me, but this feels like the best draft I've seen in ten years or so. Trading up for anyone feels so stupid.

I know I'm on an island on this and I'm probably wrong, but we have about 20 guys under contract and I know we should grab a QB at 2 (Maye), but there are warts on all 3 QBs and we could absolutely crush this roster with a ton of youth in this draft is we tarde out of 2, 36 and 40.

There are obvious starters in the 3rd, 4rth, 5th and on. We could sign a vet QB like Baker and draft half a roster and be very good.

There's going to be OL, DB RB, WR, everything available every day of this draft and we can load up on future picks for when Archie comes out.

Hell, Howell and Penix with a well built run first offense and dominating defense will get us to the playoffs.

I know Maye at 2 is the call we're supposed to make, but we're in a bare bones rebuild right now, with a patient owner and solid GM that has preached patience. I think we're a playoff team next year regardless, just from our all star coaching staff.

The talent in this draft from 40-120 is bonkers and I can't look away from it and our roster is empty. We're an expansion team essentially. I'm high on Maye and Williams and JJ, but it's not like they don't have legit knocks on them. Maye is a big Howell. I'm guessing it' having the same coaches, that they have the same issues.

I want 20 picks between 40-120 and a first next year. I'm having trouble moving off this line of thinking, even though I know "you take the QB". It's just such a unique situation for us to be in. The HOG is good with the slow build and wants a dynasty and that #2 has such value going forward.

It's like every single thing has lined up perfectly for us to build a completely new team from scratch (yes I know it's worthless without the QB, but Herberts team sucks and Purdys is great)..

I know I'm probably wrong, but I can't move off this. This draft is so stacked.

I get it. It wouldn’t be my preference, but if you signed Baker to a 3 year deal and then drafted a in the middle rounds to develop QB, inject the roster with talent, we would be super competitive short term and long term.

But I think these are blue chip QBs, so I wouldn’t do it.  I honestly do trust GMAP and if he isn't sold on a QB at 2 I’ll trust the process.
