From my understanding of the reports, ownership offered to consult with Watson on the GM search prior to him committing to the extension, and besides not doing that, they didn't even bother to interview Eric Bieniemy whom Watson reportedly advocated.

I don't begrudge any player who asks to be traded provided they reimburse their team of any future money owed. Watson's reasons might turn off a few who feel a player's influence should be confined to the field and not extended to the front office, but Watt and Watson are the natural leaders of that team and it must be incredibly frustrating for men of their cloth to have to endure the galactic misteps of their organization and refrain from taking larger steps to fixing them.

And I don’t begrudge him either. But I wonder if old school linebacker Rivera would. You know, they guy that benched Cam for not wearing a tie? We will see.

We can't give up a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for Stafford, he's not Joe Montana.

There's no way Ron gives up that much draft capital for an old QB.

It’s a lot to give up. I will say 33 isn’t really that old anymore for QBs. I had to recalibrate this in my own head. Lots of successful QBs play now until 38-40. Is Russell Wilson old? I think Stafford has been really durable over his career and could give us 3-4 more years at least. Possibly more than that.

  3. I will be really surprised if Rivera wants to go after Watson. Watson signed a LTD AFTER the Texans were an organizational disaster and AFTER O’Brien traded Hopkins and 6 months later Watson is demanding a trade. Why? Because he wasn’t consulted on GM hire? I get that Houston is terrible but does this really sound like the kind of behavior Ron Rivera respects and would give up multiple 1sts for?

I love Watson and would do it but I just can’t wrap my head around this.

Thats sketch.  I get wanting to allow people of all backgrounds to have opportunities but only giving compensation to teams if you lose a POC is a flawed system.

I think it’s a great idea. If you have two talented, hungry scouts and one is white the other is a POC it helps give the POC some points in their favor. Versus the “oh let’s hire Chad because I know his uncle from 20 years ago”,etc. Its helping to fix a systemic problem, it’s meant to be drastic.

That's probably the ceiling. 10-12 mil ish. He's good but not an elite difference maker.

The thing that interests me about this is we didn’t come to an agreement. Now, we may announce this in the next few months, but if he thinks he’s worth more than that, we will pay 10 mil next year and then we will have to decide whether to franchise him. He will get a lot of money on the open market. IMO, if we want to keep him, we need to extend him now. If we can’t agree I’m moving on next year because I’m not paying the open market price for him, it will be huge.

I also think there is going to be a bidding war. I think when the dust clears and all the teams are putting out their best offers it will take 2 first round picks (one this year, one next) or a first and a player. If I’m Detroit, I want a pick and a starter. It’s going to be hard for Detroit to sign guys because that team is going to be bad at first with a rookie QB or FA who will absolutely be a downgrade from Stafford. Their new coach seems like an absolute meathead, so I bet he wants a stud defensive player and may even sign a FA QB.

As much as it hurts, I’d really consider offering one of our D lineman (whomever we think we can survive without, Ioannadis, Payne, or Allen) and a 2nd next year as our best offer to sweeten the deal and get it done. This isn’t because I don’t like our guys but we will not be able to sign all of them in a few years and we have got to upgrade at QB.

  7. I have always admired Stafford’s game. He has one of the best arms in the league, and he makes so many wow throws.

Can anyone speak to his fit in our scheme? I’d be fine with the draft compensation that it would appear to take (1st and mid round or 1st and next years 2nd). But I don’t want him if he’s not a clear fit in Turner’s offense.

Ideally, I’d love to keep picks and draft a QB but I don’t like the options (trade up/bidding war).

I just don’t want to watch terrible QB play next year. And I like what we have but I don’t think any QB on our roster will make it more than 4 games until they prove it to me.

Like I told SIP and you too.  Respect you both.  I'd up the ante I guess on Stafford after posting and thinking about it but only our #19 and a 3rd and at Payne or Allen or like you said a pick next year (3rd) at most.  He's gonna be too expensive for us.  It's a pipe dream like Watson is, I think at this time.

I actually don’t think it will be that expensive. He’s only under contract for 2 years and he’s 33. I think a first and a mid rounder would do it. In a bidding war I’d go as high as a 1st and 2nd this year if they kicked us back a mid rounder or we swapped thirds.

I'm sorry TK, but please don't bring logic and facts into this. Me angry. Me mash keyboard. Hulk hate stairs.

He sounds like a great hire. I’m sure all the teams who had open GM spots have been reaching out to him for interviews. He’s also been on the short list of top GM candidates from stable and enviable franchises for the last few years. And when he got fired, I bet another team snapped him up really quick. He’s definitely better (and younger!)  than other candidates out there.

    I’m psyched!

You mean the guy that received not even a whiff of an interview request anywhere else and has been classed as "not ready" repeatedly?

This is entirely speculation and based on nothing in reality. We have heard literally nothing whatsoever about any displeasure from Smith at all have we?

If you were a manager and the position you have wanted your whole adult life is open in your current organization (and you’ve been acting in this role), and not only did they not interview you for the long term position, but they interviewed your subordinate, how would that make you feel for your long term prospects at that current employer?

If Kyle Smith isn’t ready and doesn’t want to be the GM, and prefers to stay in his current role, I’ll have to hear that from him. Otherwise, I’m assuming he takes the hiring of Hurney poorly and leaves within the next year. Probably heads over to LA or SF.

if I’m losing Smith, it’s because I’m gaining a great evaluator GM not a retread who failed and was out of the league until he was given a life preserver from RR.

You do realize that the GM here, as has been stated and reported repeatedly, is a lot more than just scouting players. We still have Kyle Smith, and I've seen no indication he is going anywhere. So, if we still have Smith picking the players and Hurney handling the the more administrative duties here, what's the issue?

The first part of your post is 100% condescension. The second part is 100% conjecture. There is no planet in which hiring this retread is the best move. I am going to step back from the ledge until it’s official, because I honestly can’t believe it’s possible. I’m assuming it’s a move to try and help him leverage an advisor role elsewhere.

  12. I know it would be dumb for the Texans to trade him, but there is a whole lot of reporting now that he will not play for them.

If I was Watson I’d be trying to get to SF, Miami, Colts, or another good team.

If Houston wants high draft picks, we can’t really compete. But maybe we could do a combo of picks and players? We have a surplus of DT talent that we can’t afford to keep in 2 years. What about a trade of this years 1st (19), next years first, and Jonathan Allen?

Don't see Fins trading Tua. That would be dumb.

If it was playing out like that I’d probably go with Harris (top RB and possibly BPA) or Waddle (great blend of BPA and need). But I’d also be working a trade cup because Pitts is ridiculous and would be worth jumping into top 15.

. So, my question is: does the team force him into the tackle position where he may never be better than average? Or, does the team play to his natural traits and make him an excellent guard?

Based on our history with our top 5 pick Scherrf, I think we would do the right thing and put Charles in the best position to succeed.

That said, I think an older, stronger Charles is our starting OT by 2022.

It wouldn't be accurate to compare Doctson's first year to other WRs' first years since he was on IR for 95% of his rookie season. So counting his first two seasons where he actually played, a few WRs who blossomed in their 4th year after starting off with two years similar to Doctson's first 2 years on the field were Reggie Wayne and Jordy Nelson.

    First two years:

    Games played - Doctson (31), Wayne (29), Nelson (29)

    Receptions - Doctson (79), Wayne (76), Nelson (55)

    Yards - Doctson (1,034), Wayne (1,061), Nelson (686)

Yards per reception - Doctson (13.09), Wayne (13.96), Nelson (12.47)

    TDs - Doctson (8), Wayne (4), Nelson (4)

    Wayne's 4th year stats:

    Receptions - 77

    Yards - 1,210

    Yards per reception - 15.71

    TDs - 12

    Nelson's 4th year stats:

    Receptions - 68

    Yards - 1,263

    Yards per reception - 18.60

    TDs - 15

Of course there's at least one noticeable difference between those two WRs and Doctson--the QBs throwing them the ball over their first two years on the field:

    Wayne - Peyton Manning

    Nelson - Aaron Rodgers

Docston- Kirk Cousins, Alex Smith, Colt McCoy, Mark Sanchez, Josh Johnson

The problem with what you cite is it ignores targets. Doctson was targeted frequently and dropped a ton of balls.

Cooley broke down his targets last year and his catch rate was well below league average. I don’t know those others WR’s drop rate, but I doubt it was anywhere near as bad as Doctson’s.

Docston is a number 4 WR who should be heavily featured in red zone, because he’s a jump ball player. He’s not a good route runner and he’s not physical. He may fill the red zone roll nicely for another team, but for a first round pick he is a bust.

    Edit-

Look it up yourself; it’s not even close.
