I have watched a few peoples reviews on both QBs (Maye and JD) and I come away with the idea that JD reads defenses better and manipulates defenders better. I don't ever see you guys discussing that though and I want your opinions on it if you have any.

The videos I have seen shows Maye reading defenses pre-snap very well. He also called his own protection and could change the play.

I think post snap he didn’t have a lot of time due to free rushers and his oline losing.

I think overall when accounting for age and experience Maye has great upside there, but Daniels executed their offense to perfection and played well against the Alabama defense.

  2. I prefer Maye but if you like Daniels more you should listen to Keim’s latest about their pro days, lol.

Coaches (not Washington) he has talked to see Maye as needing a year. It’s overall very negative about Maye, IMO.

I think Coaches across the league prefer Daniels and GMs prefer Maye-just my speculation for all the discrepancies.

I’ve really wanted to like Daniels because some of the biggest determinants of success (work ethic, character) as well as good arm talent (release, accuracy) he has in spades.

I just hope if he’s he pick the coaches have a plan and scheme to use his running but not have him kill himself running the ball.

I have no doubt that he will learn and master the scheme ASAP.

I still will have to really talk myself into him if he’s the choice, I think Maye’s issues are much easier to correct and his path to success is much easier to see in some sort of air raid style offense.

Every single year people overrate these pro days or give them more credit than they deserve. People will make some throws, miss some throws and nothing will change.

I just don't understand how, the cast majority were loud, wrong and looked foolish after making these grand declarations about Ben Johnson we are back here already lol (and that means declarations about anyone - they might love McCarthy I don't know).

I mean it doesn’t guarantee anything and it isn’t important. But that being said, they aren’t actors. There is no subterfuge and their facial expressions are genuine. If they thought he performed poorly, or thought he was a jerk in their previous interviews, they wouldn’t look like that.

I really don’t think they have decided until they bring the 3 QBs in for long visits and talk ball with them/observe them over a longer period.

Forgive me if this question has been asked, but from a durability standpoint, how concerned is anybody about JD's weight? He tall enough, many QBs had the same weight (Montana, Brees), Kyler Murray is short and light, but historically I do not see to many QBs with the BMI (height/weight) JD has who have lasted long or made any meaningful mark in NFL/team history from a franchise QB standpoint.

It’s been discussed a lot, it’s a big concern for a lot of us. He weighed 210 at 6’3 5/8 at his pro day but unclear what his playing weight is- he looked bigger at the pro day, not sure if he can keep it on.

Pretty cool to hear Harris say yesterday that Quinn and Peters were on their way to go meet the architect working on the renovation of the current training facilities. He’s letting them dictate what they need/want for their guys and it’s getting done. No ignorant middle men making decisions that make you go “whoever designed this never talked to a football player or football person in their life”, just our GM and HC making their needs and preferences known.

Also great because they can draw on their experiences across Seattle, Atlanta, Dallas, New England, Denver, and San Francisco to think about what they liked from each and what they didn’t like.

Two great people to steer those decisions.

I’d rather have Sinnot than Sanders. He’s more in the mold of the guys who are having the biggest impact in the league at that position and if they like Ertz…  Probably also a later pick than Sanders.

I actually think he’s going first now, he’s a solid 2 in mocks and I think Sanders slips to 3rd. Sanders can’t block and his RAS scores were ****.

I think his arm got tired and the deep throws at the end suffered.  But I thought the workout was OK.  He showed off good throwing power.  His drops looked slower than I expected, and the workout as a whole lacked urgency.  I was hoping to see a CJ Stroud type of throwing session where he just moved through each drop and throw like a machine.  Explosive steps, explosive hitches, super fast release with easy spin.  No fatigue.  Even Stroud's head movements when he was looking off his throws were explosive.  He was locked in, and I thought Jayden was very casual and slow paced.  Also felt like the ball was slow to come out.  He's sitting at the bottom of his drop holding it and it comes out late, plain and simple.  He doesn't like to anticipate breaks even in a scripted session, and this dude is going to need a really clean pocket to operate a full field passing game.

I'm just not sold that he's better than Maye at all.  If we pick him over Maye, I think we'll be making a mistake, and a consequential one.  It'll be hard for me to get on board with that choice despite all of the good work Peters has done so far.  I'll root for him, but I won't be able to buy in until I see it work out.

I noticed he sometimes took almost a hitch or extra baby step and held the ball longer. Considering no defenders or pass rush, was a little concerning.

  8. Ok- I probably should have watched the pro day before I speculated but  watching it I will say that he definitely looks like he put on good weight. His legs are noticeably bigger and more muscular. I’m not sure if he can keep it on, or what he played at, but it’s a good sign.

Some of you people are killing me. You act like the guy couldn't be working with elite nutrition and fitness people to work with him during this process. Smfh

You think LSU doesn’t have the same quality nutrition and weight lifting program as the pros? GTFO. Commanders just hired our new head sports nutritionist from a lower tier college lol.

It’s possible, but my eyes tell he me he’s extremely thin. Compare him to other players. He looked tiny last season. And he’s not running, so what else should we think?

  10. Yeah. Part of the problem with coach turnover is even if the players are good (which we don’t know if Forbes even is) they may not be scheme fits.

I think DQ would have probably preferred Gonzalez and maybe Porter jr over him.

Oh well. Hopefully this won’t be an issue for us moving forward if we can keep DQ and GMAP together long term and have success.

Pretty bold claim. What’s he basing that on?

The Lance trade seems like a pretty reasonable comp — SF went from 12 to 3, rather than from 11 to 3 (as MIN would be doing), but it’s pretty close.

SF gave up three 1sts (including 12) and a 3rd for pick 3. Comparing that to the picks the original tweet is suggesting MIN would give up, I think each MIN pick would roughly be considered more valuable:

    MIN #11 > SF #12

    MIN #23 > SF 1st (+1 year)

    MIN 1st (+1 year) > SF 1st (+2 years)

SF had to throw in a current year 3rd on top of the three 1sts, so maybe MIN would have to add a bit more. But having to add a whole other 1st to sweeten the pot enough? That seems like a stretch.

I’m not sure he’s properly valuing the fact that the MIN deal would include multiple current-year 1sts. Teams rarely give up multiple 1sts in the same draft — usually these major packages involve picks in successive years.

Maybe. But every year is different and this year you have more competition from other teams. Competition for the pick=more.

Most stories, from now until the draft, are going to be click bait.  Just wild speculation to keep everyone interested.  The NFL loves it.  But most of it is silly.  Ten teams wind up picking the same players.  There's a mock where the Commanders trade up to the first round using #36 plus 2 other picks just to get a CB.  Not an OT!  The team that acquired the #36 pick then selects Chop Robinson.  That's the danger of trading up with that #36 pick. Someone will fall to 36 even if it's not our most coveted position.  Maybe Ladd McConkey....not a bad consolation prize.

Someone on Reddit had Commanders taking Daniels at 2 and then trading back up into the first…for Brian Thomas Jr. ****ing absurd.

Russ Grimm lives not that far from me (or at least used to). Should I call round and see if he’s in shape?

Let me break out my very own US related breakfast joke.

America - can we eat cake for breakfast?

Rest of the World - no!!

America - what if we call it a muffin?

Half of IHOP breakfast offerings are funnel cake, cinnamon rolls, “pancakes” covered in icing, etc. lol

So one problem I have with the "hits ceiling faster with somewhat lower but still good ceiling and higher floor" thing is that won't get you any discounts on the 2nd contract.

You see it all over the league, where teams have a perfectly GOOD QB, but also a guy who isn't putting the team on their back for 20 games a year.

I mean shoot, we had people in here a few weeks back going after Josh Allen bc he couldn't single handedly will the Bills to not miss a field goal wide right.

How much worse would it be if you have a guy like Derek Carr or Kyler Murray.   You gotta pay them BIG bucks or they will bail on you for someone who will pay them, but they also aren't winning you the SB on their own.  You need a team around them, but their 40M+/year contract is gonna kill your cap.

That's a no from me dawg, give me higher ceiling pick.  Obviously if you have to choose between *gestures at the disaster our QB position has been for 30 years* and say, Kyler Murray/Derek Carr/Trevor Lawrence, you take the latter.  But if you're consciously choosing the lower ceiling guy who might have a shorter career....I dunno man, I question that judgment pretty hard.

Definitely agree. In the moment, it’s nice to have an average starting QB and maybe be competing for playoffs but ultimately you need to pay that QB an exorbitant amount and then be perfect in building the roster (or have a transcendent HC/OC) to have a shot.

Without trading additional picks, it’s better to try and find an elite QB, even if he busts, vs a solid one.

  15. Mark Bullock does some excellent film breakdowns of NFL and college players.

I highly recommend subscribing to his Substack to read his articles and watch his breakdown clips.

In a subscriber Q&A, he made this comment regarding his QB preference, as of now:

“I do keep going back and fourth on it. For maybe the last 10 days, I’ve been leaning more Maye over Daniels on the basis of worst case scenario. Maye’s biggest red flag is his frustrating misses/inconsistent accuracy. Having watched a bunch of Chargers film the past week to study Ekeler, I couldn’t help but notice Herbert having a lot of those misses too and the Chargers have managed to live with it just fine. So those inconsistencies can be worked around and he could still create enough good/explosive plays to make up for it (obviously not ideal, but it’s possible to overcome if he can’t fix it outright).

Daniels biggest red flag is his lack of care for his own health. He willingly exposes himself to too many big hits on a consistent basis when he has the opportunity to slide or step out of bounds to protect himself better. So the worst case scenario for Daniels is he tries to pick up an extra 5 yards on a scramble in his rookie year, cuts inside and exposes himself to a huge hit from a bigger, stronger NFL player that leaves him with a bad injury and he can’t get back on the field.

I do hate projecting injury concerns onto prospects, but Daniels is just so reckless when he runs it’s hard to not be concerned about it. In a best case scenario, both players become really really good QBs in the NFL and it’s tough to separate them. In a worst case scenario, Maye becomes frustratingly inconsistent and can’t fix the misses on layups underneath, but you can work around that while Daniels gets himself seriously hurt and can’t get back on the field.

But I could easily change my mind on that multiple times before the draft. Ultimately I like all 3 of the top guys (I also really like McCarthy, for whatever it’s worth) and won’t be mad/upset if they draft any of them. The key is building out a system and supporting cast that plays to their strengths.“

2024 NFL Draft: Inside Jayden Daniels' historic improvement and why teams are confident he'll hit his ceiling

Burrow and Daniels are the only two quarterbacks in the last 20 years (minimum 400 drop backs) that increased their adjusted completion percentage by 4% or more AND their yards per attempt by 3.0 or more. And beyond just those two metrics, Daniels also improved in his accuracy downfield, ball placement across the field, decision-making in the red zone and decision-making as a runner.

Despite my reservations about Jayden there is zero question as far as work ethic, coachability, desire, etc.

I’m rooting for him to succeed and I’ll quickly jump on board if GMAP and the front office decide they want to build the offense around Jayden (probably more similar to Eagles) than air raid.

I just think Drake Maye’s game translates better.

    We will see.
