apparently "Hey guys at least he is not a complete idiot" is the bar we set for a Skins HC these days ... sad. its great tv to watch him consistently stick his foot in his mouth, without the self realization to understand how it sounds to everyone else... then clumsily tries to explain away what he really meant. Then rinse, repeat a few days later. "The English idiot originally meant “ignorant person,” but the more usual reference now is to a person who lacks basic intelligence or common sense rather than education." This definition seems to fit well.

Official 2023 Roster Cuts News & Speculation Thread
oraphus replied to MartinC's topic in The Stadium
Browns just cut Wes Martin.. reality is all this worry over bottom of the roster players that never played a down in the NFL is premature.. Vast majority of the players we want to get to the practice squad will get there.. including Fromm. -
Realistically in this league you need a top ~8qb to consistently compete for the championship. (Unless you’re 49ers) This team is good enough to consistently finish 8-8 with or without a qb. So if Howell doesn’t have the makings of a top 8qb, they should be looking to upgrade. Otherwise you’re in the Cousins category “pretty good but not good enough “.

Realistically chances are much higher that he ends up just that... again, still a huge win and yet should be pretty easy for the org to understand that it still needs a starter QB. Ultimately we all hope we have hit the jackpot of-course.. and we are due just from sheer luck perspective, but i have little faith in this FOs ability in finding a franchise qb. While Howell has looked good in preseason against mostly backups... the enthusiasm on this board is over the top.

I find it funny that people compare Howell to Baker Mayfield and say "oh no, i hope he is not the next Baker!" If Howell is the next Baker thats a huge win for the Org. Mayfield is a bottom 3rd of the league starting QB. If our 5th rd pick turns in to top end backup/ border-line starter at less than 1mil a year... the savings can be used to shore up other areas and to bring along a rookie high end pick (if howell does not work out) slowly.

Rivera is a nice guy but not a good coach.. he is pretty much bottom of the barrel. I don't even consider him a coach.. he is not an Xs and Os guy.. he is more of a facilitator who lets all the coaches under him make decisions. Probably a pretty good trait for a coach and a boss, but in football he is so hands off that it takes him way too long to understand that things aren't working. So then you say.. well no, Ron is more of a GM - yet he fails horribly as a GM as well. Poor hires.. brought it the same Carolina staff that failed miserably there, just to 'surprise, surprise' fail again here. Poor drafting and FAs have been nothing special. He is about as unimaginative, old school, half brained, meat head coach you can ask for. Him getting fired can't come soon enough! I Hope Harris can see that sooner than later.

I believe the end will justify the process... end being cleaning house on the coaching staff and starting with a real HC and a real GM next year.
