Pro Bowl Left Tackle Trent Williams had a 4 game suspension announced shortly after the Redskins managed a rare tie with the Bengals last week in London, England. The fanbase immediately errupted into pissed off comments all over the web from ES to Facebook to the Twitterverse. Nearly everyone assuming it was a weed violation, which would be his second. However it was later released that Trent actually missed a test, which per the 2016 Policy and Program on Substances of Abuse is the same as failing a test. In 2014, the NFL/NFLPA revised the Policy in part to lessen the severity of sanctions for marijuana use. The Policy spells out escalating penalties for repeated marijuana tests. Let's take a look:

Discipline Schedule for Positive Tests6
The following will illustrate the applicable level of discipline to be imposed for violations as set forth in Sections 1.5.2 and 1.5.3 of the Policy:

Discipline for violation following entry into Stage Two:
Positive Test for marijuana – 2-week fine
Any other Positive Test – 4-week fine

Discipline for violation following imposition of a 2-week fine:
Any Positive Test – 4-week fine

Discipline for violation following imposition of a 4-week fine:
Any Positive Test – 4-game suspension

Discipline for violation following imposition of a 4-game suspension:
Positive Test for marijuana – 10-game suspension
Any other Positive Test – banishment

Discipline for violation following imposition of a 10-game suspension:
Any Positive Test – banishment

After a first positive, a player is referred to a treatment program & tested more often. Subsequent violations result in 2 game fine, a 4 game fine, & the a 4 game suspension. Here's the problem with Trent's 4 game suspension. According to this, Trent should have only been hit with a 4 game fine, not a 4 game suspension. After the violation, an NFL PA attorney that was acting on behalf of Trent, agreed to a penalty equivalent for a third offense (4 game suspension). The NFL PA attorney took the suspension, without knowing Trent had never received the 4 week fine, which again, is what he should have received. And now, it can't be appealed or adjusted.

He could possibly rasie a legal action and potentially sue for loss of earnings - which he would struggle to recoup because the counter arguement would be that instead of a 4 game suspension he would serve a 4 game fine - although it might affect incentives (e.g. pro bowl appearance etc) but following such action would not get him back on the field any quicker. 

This is a very large mess . I cannot blame Trent one bit for this but the NFL, the NFLPA have really hosed him on this and should be doing something to put it right - given this is not a failed test but a missed test - This is not a technicality this is incompetence

I really do not get this thought process at all. There are two completely separate issues that many can't seem to separate. Trent's responsibility and the leagues responsibility.

It appears he is getting jobbed here but had he never failed a single test he would not have had to worry about missing the test while in Africa. He has to be accountable for his actions.

Now, there is a second, completely different issue here with the league and their incompetence. What's worse is that when it's clear he was wronged there is no recourse. But still, had he never failed a single test none of this would be happening - period.

There also is the issue of the other 10 or 11 failed tests he had back when he was suspended the first time. I'm not sure how that plays into the scenario. Florio had something about it on his site a couple days ago and I only skimmed over it.

Yeah, and the NFLPA lawyer was recommended by Mara, I'm sure :)

 

Isn't there some recourse here?  Can we get thh word out and start some sort of outcry?
