Redskins Park

Executive Vice President/Head Coach Mike Shanahan

On how they will list quarterback Robert Griffin III’s status:

“I’m not sure what we will list him as, but we’ll let you guys know. If he passes his tests and we don’t see any symptoms then it looks like he’ll be ready to go.”

On if Griffin III practiced fully today:

“Yeah, full practice today.”

On wide receiver Pierre Garçon’s foot injury:

“I think it’s lingering for sure. It was enough where he didn’t take a lot of reps today.”

On if Garçon practiced less today than yesterday:

“Yes. Wednesday he had full practice and yesterday he had full practice. Today, he’s questionable.”

On what could help Garçon’s injury:

“I don’t know what to tell you. It’s painful, that’s why we set him out. It’s tender and it’s still sore, but it’s a pain issue. [He’s] not sore enough to where he can’t push off all the time, so that’s why we listed him as questionable.”

On if he considered ruling Griffin III out despite doctors clearing him:

“That’s what we have doctors for. Doctors make those decisions, we don’t. If Robert feels like he’s fine, he’s had no side-effects, he wants to play, he feels good to play…If Robert were to say, “Hey, you know what? I have a headache,” of course we would do that. That’s why we run all these tests. But why would you not let somebody play if he’s felt good right at the end of the game [and] every day until now? But if he has these tests after practice today and all of sudden he’s not feeling good or something’s wrong, obviously we’re not going to take the chance.”

Come on Ryp, it took one quarter to show what Garçon will bring. Give the guy more than 1/3 of a season before a Comb reference....

yeah, I know, I know....but I can't help feeling he's a bit soft at this point....sounds like its just pain and he cant deal w it. Plus we all saw the video of him dancing after the Saints game.

Adrenaline. You don't usually feel the full impact of foot and ankle injuries until the next day.

Plus, let's see you go out and practice every day, planting and cutting and hitting top speed frequently while dealing with foot pain. Colston had the same problem and he was ineffective until recently when he got over it. We just need to be patient, yeah I know, difficult concept, with Garcon getting through the injury. It's not like Garcon has a bad injury history going back to college, so I think your Malcom Kelly comparison is woefully ignorant.

I'm sorry but Pierre has about 42 million reasons to suck it up and play at a high level.......

Injuries happen - I'm sure Garçon is more frustrated than any of us. I would think he will play Sunday even though he is not 100% - I would expect us to target him early in the gameplan and maybe less as the game goes on.

First of all, let me say that I wish Shanahan would speak regular English and not these half-ass replies that don't seem to make much sense. If I'm understanding this one correctly, then he is asking, "Why would he not be allowed to play as long as he is feeling okay?" Well, for one thing Coach, it hasn't even been a week since your QB got his bell rung and then couldn't even remember the score or the quarter of the game. I can't help but think that putting him back in the game this Sunday might be a little too soon. You're no doctor, and concussions have to be dealt with very carefully. RGIII is fine right now mainly because he has only had one full practice this week and no significant contact. You put him back in the game on Sunday, and the situation will be much different. I think he needs to sit out for one game regardless IMHO.

Evidently the replies are making more sense to me than to you because I actually picked up on the fact that Shanahan said he is deferring to both the doctors and Griffin himself on whether or not Griffin will play this week. If he is told that Griffin isn't alright, Griffin will not play.

It's going to be hard at least for me not to worry about him if he plays this weekend. I just think it's a little risky for him to play this soon after what happened last week, regardless of whether or not a doctor has cleared him.

RGIII has been tested by independent specialists before he was allowed to practice and after every practice. They say he is fine. They are doctors.

Have you ever had a foot injury?

No, of course not...

I could be wrong, but I think a lot of people who criticize players who are injured have either never played or coached the game themselves and/or have never had to deal with a sports injury themselves hence they come off as over critical and rely on 1 of the 2 same arguments: the player is a wuss or the player gets paid enough to play through, showing a severe lack of understanding for actual impact of injuries.

Garcon has already proven to me he's not taking advantage. When he plays the guy goes all out and sacrifices his body like it's nothing. The guy is an absolute killer blocker and will initiate contact when he has the ball in his hands as a runner. That's more than we could say about any WRs we've had in the last how many years?

Actually I have had several foot and ankle injuries. But I guess at what 25 years old and 4.637 posts you know everything right....

If he's had sports injuries and you haven't, then in this case yes.

btw, trying to use age to win an argument is pretty lame

I'm 30 and have over 10k posts, so I better meet your "lolifications"

A foot injury, especially in the ball which is where you plant your foot every time when running and cutting, can severely impact your performance. While NFL players recover faster, they also have to perform at a high level, so any lessening of that cuts their performance down. A WR has to rely on speed and cuts, so Garcon is hitting the impacted area every time, all day long, so there's more to it than the overly-simplistic view of "suck it up." This isn't a hang nail.

Anytime someone makes any kind of statement beginning with "Well he gets paid all this money..." I immediately tune them out. The foot is one of the worst places that a player can get hurt. Unfortunately money can't make people heal faster.

Robert Griffin III is a special flower! Clearly if he's going to play, we need to wrap him in a cocoon of satin and silk and erect a ten foot wall in front of him, for if he were ever to get it, he would shatter into a million pieces.

Excuse me but I have had sports related foot and ankle my comment was made based on a 42 million dollar contract even if he is out there to be no more than to make the defense think about him would be a asset. Actually whats lame is you acting like you know everything when actually you know nothing about who I am what I have done using age isn't lame because what you fail to understand is in most cases with age comes wisdom....
