Kerry team slams reports VP Cheney had a flu shot

Wed Oct 20 2004 20:02:09 ET

Senator John Kerry's presidential campaign Wednesday slammed Vice President Dick Cheney, a heart patient, over reports he had a flu shot, despite a shortage of the vaccine.

The campaign complained that Treasury Secretary John Snow and Senate Majority leader Bill Frist also had jabs, despite Bush's advice that the young and healthy did not need to get an injection.

"Once again, the Bush administration proves that it is the 'do as we say, not as we do' White House," the campaign said in a statement issued in Pittsburgh where Kerry was campaigning.

"The very week that (health) secretary (Tommy) Thompson is telling Americans to keep calm, Dick Cheney, John Snow and Bill Frist are getting flu shots."

"It is unfortunate that the Bush administration failed to do the work necessary to ensure that all Americans, including those

most at risk, had been able to get shots as well."

Cheney would fit into the government's definition of those most vulnerable to a looming influenza epidemic as he has a long history of heart disease.

Bush last week suggested in the final presidential debate that the young and healthy forgo the annual shot amid a shortage of vaccine that Kerry has blamed on the president's management of the health system.

Frankly, I think Bush should have one, too.

My reasoning is the same one (at least, as I understand it) that says soldiers don't get to refuse vaccinations: Your body don't belong to you any more. (Or, more politely: Part of your job is to be ready to be sent somewhere on short notise. That means having your shots up-to-date, just in case you need them.)

Just as I think Kerry's position should be "I'll get one if I win the election, because Presidents are important to the country, but Presidential candidates aren't."

And BTW, Theresa says Laura hasn't had a job ?!?!?

Agreed on Cheney. His heart trouble puts him on the list.

What's Frist's excuse?

Heinz Kerry Separates Self From Mrs. Bush

Wed Oct 20, 2:08 PM ET

WASHINGTON - Teresa Heinz Kerry says she doesn't know if first lady Laura Bush has ever had "a real job" and suggests their different experiences help make them different people.

Laura Bush taught in public schools in Texas from 1968 to 1977, the year she married George W. Bush.

In an interview published Wednesday in USA Today, the newspaper asked the wife of Democratic candidate John Kerry if she would be different from Laura Bush as a first lady.

"Well, you know, I don't know Laura Bush. But she seems to be calm, and she has a sparkle in her eye, which is good," Heinz Kerry said. "But I don't know that she's ever had a real job ā€” I mean, since she's been grown up. So her experience and her validation comes from important things, but different things."

Heinz Kerry said she sees her age as a benefit ā€” she is 66 and Bush 57. "I'm older, and my validation of what I do is a little bit bigger ā€” because I'm older, and I've had different experiences. And it's not a criticism of her. It's just, you know, what life is about," she said.

Karen Hughes, an adviser to President Bush, criticized Heinz Kerry's remarks as "indicative of an unfortunate mind-set that seeks to divide women based on who works at home and who works outside the home."

I think this just goes to show that the Kerry camp is getting desperate. They haven't opened up a lead over Bush in the polls, it's still tight even though according to the "MSNBC" poll, and others  Kerry "destroyed" Bush in the debates. Substance over delivery perhaps?

Edit: If Theresa Heinz Kerry was to get a shot (She's 66) do you think the Bush camp would attack her?

The sad part is Bush was supposed to slap kerry in this election.

How sad is it that it is as close as it is?

BTW, don't count your chickens before they hatch.

Bush was supposed to slap Kerry? Who said so? Bush's approval rating has declined since 9/11. No WMD's in Iraq was supposed to be the nail in the coffin. It seems to me that the Dems had the election ripe for the picking, but Kerry is such a pathetic canidate that they are barely neck and neck.

Never man, it ain't over yet, and anything could happen. However, I think this new attack shows that there is some desperation starting to show on the part of the Dems. They are pulling out everything, hoping something resonates with the voting public. Maybe something will, maybe something won't. I just think attacking an old man with heart problems, for getting a flu-shot (when this is precisely what the President said he should do) is without question...desperation.

Are you serious, or just being a dope?

Frist is not a member of the administration, last I checked. So, he needs no excuse for getting a flu shot. His doctor would have to sign off on him as a candidate. Might be as simple as HE is a doctor and they'd like him healthy. Who knows. And, who the hell cares. That you'd even ask makes me wonder what's wrong with you.

I had a flu shot too. I'm perfectly healthy. But, my wife is pregnant, and a diabetic. Maybe I should just f@ck around so you can try, dumbly, to make a political point that is meaningless, yes?

I'm no fan of either party, and I think the leadership of both are socialist-statists, but I've got to laugh at the Democrats. Since the Contract with America, I've never seen a greater concentration of lying, demagoguing, pieces of ___ in my life.

And that's saying a lot because there are lots of scummy Republicans.

I love how Patty Murray out here ran an ad that attacked her opponent for using her QUOTES(on VIDEO) of her thoughts on Osama bin Laden, as if he was just invoking 9/11 and Osama when all he did was SHOW HER VIDEO CLIP!

Then again, she was voted dumbest senator by bipartisan voting lol.

No Democrat will get my vote ever because of the tactics I've seen.

Kerry and Democrats invoking Jim Crow and James Byrd and scaring old folks and using the draft to scare kids. Already planning for lawsuits over the election.

As a Democrat, can you really not be like Pat Caddell and realize that your party has been hijacked by confederacy of gangsters?

How is it Pat Caddell sees it, but you can't?

Everyone below 2 and over 55 should get the shot..

Everyone in the Military, Cops, Teachers should get the shot..

Anyone that interacts with children and senior citizens should get the shot...

Anyone that has a history of the flu should get the shot...

There is also a pill or a mist ??? not sure, there is plenty of that i believe...

You ran out of shots maybe after your second sentence. That's the point, do you not get it? FluMist only adds a small amount - and ideally the most susceptible should get the shot and not the mist anyway.

It amazes me how many people can justify their own selfishness here. No, actually I guess it doesn't. It's not "just a shot", people in the target groups die from the flu, that's why they're in the target groups.

Art, you're partially right, I'm half kidding about Frist. As a doc himself I'd admire it if he could have set an example by foregoing a shot, but I understand he got his before the magnitude of the problem became apparent.

I'm curious as to how I ever survived without the flu shot before.

I never took one until I went in the Air Force and after I got out I didn't take one again until last year.

This year I will probably skip it and let someone else have it, even though my company gives them for free.

Here we go back to the media again, but sometimes they blow stuff way out of proportion, getting people scared and all.

Oh please.

How is it your are blind to the foibles of the current administration, the Republican party, the conservative movement? Ahh yes, those bad Democrats are much worse!

You really trying to tell us your vote was decided this year not over policy but as a protest against tactics?

I expect you are going to vote a certain way, but like many people you feel validated if you can search and find instances of bad behavior on the part of the other guys.

Flumist "ONLY" ads a small amount?

so they make the mist for no apparent purpose?

Among other groups, healthy children and adults are at risk of influenza infection each year. This is particularly true for school-aged children, those in large families, and adults in frequent contact with other children or adults. School-aged children are particularly susceptible to the flu. In one study, children aged 5 to 14 were approximately four times more likely than adults to get influenza. School-aged children are also likely to spread the virus to others in their home and community. That's why when you vaccinate your healthy children aged 5 to 17 against the flu, you can help protect your whole family.

Learn more about FluMistĀ® (Influenza Virus Vaccine Live, Intranasal), the nasal flu vaccine that helps provide healthy children and adults, aged 5 to 49, with safe and effective protection against the flu.

Theeb, I don't understand your post. You seem to be arguing that there's no shortage of doses - "plenty" is the word you used. That puts you in a club with a membership of precisely one.

To be technically correct, yes it seems they do produce the mist for no reason, considering last year MedImmune produced 5 million doses and threw out over 4.5 million of them. But that wan't my point, nor did I even hint that.

Out of an original projection of over 100 million flu vaccinations in the US, FluMist is expected to total at best 2 million. So yes, comparatively speaking, it adds only a small amount.

Quoting the marketing blurb from the manufacturer illustrates my point, that these doses are not fit for the first group you listed, the very young and the oldsters.

It can help, albeit a comparative drop in the bucket, by providing protection for healthy people who for other reasons are in the target groups. Unless there are other valid reasons to avoid the mist, that's why I labelled healthy people who opt for the shot as being selfish.

Include me in the group that thinks the Pres and Vice Pres should be innoculated. While it's a noble position (I think Bush probably had it and didn't tell anyone shhh...) to say I'm tough and I will go without, I think it's important to protect the Presidency from incapasity. You don't want the man to feel woozy and not be able to focus. You don't want his reasoning and ability to act limited.

BTW, Bush made this an issue by declaring that the way he will solve the shortage is by abstaining and recommending that everyone else does too. It's sort of the safe sex method.
