Upshaw, Bauman Among Final Cuts

By Gary Fitzgerald

September 5, 2004

Defensive end Regan Upshaw, cornerback Rashad Bauman and running back Sultan McCullough were among the final cuts on Sunday as the Redskins reduced their roster to 53 players.

Running back John Simon was placed on injured reserve with a left shoulder injury.

Excluding Simon, the Redskins released 22 players in all on Sunday. The following players were also released:

Rashad Bauman

Fred Baxter, TE

Ryan Boschetti, DT

Rufus Brown, CB

Sean Dillard, WR

Dameane Douglas, WR

Pita Elisara, OL

Bill Ferrario, OL

Gibran Hamdan, QB

Cedric Killings, DT

Ola Kimrin, K

Ben Nowland, OL

Gari Scott, WR

Marcus Spriggs, OL

Leonard Stephens, TE

Daryl Terrell, OL

Garnell Wilds, CB

Jafar Williams, WR

Darrell Wright, DE

In addition, linebacker Chris Clemons was waived with an injury settlement. Clemons had missed most of preseason with a knee injury.

Upshaw was perhaps the most notable name on the list. The eight-year NFL veteran played one season in Washington, starting eight games at right defensive end last year and recording 22 tackles and one sack. He had 34.5 career sacks.

At defensive end, the Redskins have Renaldo Wynn and Phillip Daniels. Ron Warner and Demetric Evans, both of whom recorded sacks in Friday's preseason finale against Atlanta, will round out the team's defensive ends.

Second-year player Ade Jimoh beat out Bauman, a 2002 third-round draft pick, and undrafted rookies Garnell Wilds and Rufus Brown for the Redskins' fourth cornerback spot. In two NFL seasons, Bauman has appeared in 27 games, mostly as a reserve, with two starts. He recorded two interceptions last season.

McCullough was a 2003 undrafted rookie free agent who made the Redskins' squad last season but played in only one game. He hoped to stick on this year's team, but with Ladell Betts and Rock Cartwright, McCullough was apparently caught in a numbers game.

For the preseason, McCullough rushed for 212 yards on 61 carries, a 3.4 yards-per-carry average, and one touchdown. He also recorded 9 catches for 52 yards.

Simon played in three preseason games, missing the last two due to the shoulder injury. He rushed for 58 yards on 17 carries and caught six passes for 56 yards.

On Monday, the Redskins can assign eight players to the team's practice squad. Those players can practice with the team each week but would have to be signed to the 53-man roster to play in a regular-season game.

Out of Bauman, Upshaw and McCullough, I am shocked the most at Bauman being cut over Ade Jimoh. Just shocked. Bauman was a third rounder, played decently many times, rarely gave up the big play. He was the third CB at best - but to cut him over Jimoh?!?!?!

I notice that Rufus Brown was cut. I assume they will try to add both he and McCullough to the practice squad... but I doubt that Sultan won't be picked up by someone else.

Agreed. Jimoh has not showed anything promosing so far. What was the coaching staff thinking???

How could Ade "The other teams love to see me take the field 'cause they know it's an easy touchdown just throw to the guy I'm covering" Jimoh make the team?

From what I remember of last year, he was constantly beaten.

I miss Darrell Green.

this will be the first season in recent memory that the Skins will be starting off with a #3 corner that can truly step up and take over a starting role if required :)

Bauman was drafted too high at #3. His lack of height and size negated his decent cover skills. He was in position to make plays but got abused by guys 6'1 and 6'2. And he was in and out of the lineup a bit due to injury, another bad sign for younger guys with Gibbs around.

Unlike Norv and Spurrier players who lack ability won't be kept around and allowed to ride the IR from season to season.
