Bush Falls Off Bike, Kerry Makes Joke

This is classic. I don't know which is more funny -- the Kerry quote about taking the training wheels off, or the bizarre quote from the president's spokesman about how he goes all out and wasn't whistling show tunes.

From the drudge report--

The president fell off bike Saturday.. Kerry told reporters in front of cameras, 'Did the training wheels fall off?'... Reporters are debating whether to treat it is as on or off the record... Developing...

CRAWFORD, Texas (AP) - President Bush suffered cuts and bruises early Saturday afternoon when he fell while mountain biking on his ranch, White House spokesman Trent Duffy said.

Bush was on the 16th mile of a 17-mile ride when he fell, Duffy said. He was riding with a military aide, members of the Secret Service and his personal physician, Dr. Richard Tubb.

"He had minor abrasions and scratches on his chin, upper lip, nose, right hand and both knees," Duffy said. "Dr. Tubb, who was with him, cleaned his scratches, said he was fine. The Secret Service offered to drive him back to the house. He declined and finished his ride."

Bush was wearing his bike helmet and a mouth guard when the mishap occurred. Duffy said he didn't know exactly how the accident happened.

"It's been raining a lot and the topsoil is loose," the spokesman said. "You know this president. He likes to go all out. Suffice it to say he wasn't whistling show tunes."

Bush left Crawford shortly after the bike mishap for Austin, where he was attending a private party of his daughter, Jenna, who graduated from the University of Texas earlier in the day. When he arrived in Austin, Bush was not wearing any bandages, although scrapes were visible on his right temple and on his chin.

As he departed from the presidential helicopter with his wife, Bush paused to give photographers a chance to take his picture, then shrugged, waved and got into a waiting limousine.

Earlier this month, Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry took a spill from his bicycle while riding with Secret Service agents through Concord, Mass., about 18 miles north of Boston. Kerry fell when his bike hit a patch of sand. He was not injured.

Told about Bush's mishap, Kerry said, "I hope he's OK. I didn't know the president rode a bike."

Considering that he was on a 17 mile terrain trail, falling off his bike is not a big deal, I could understand Kerry joking about it IF he fell off a beach cruiser riding down a paved street, but this isn't the case.

God, this election really sucks... both candidtates are freakin horrible. I doubt I'll be voting at all.

Every time I hear about Bush, he's at his ranch in Texas. I think he's spent more time at his ranch than at the White House. Bush is perhaps has the most demanding and most powerful position in the world and he's probably spent half of his term on vacation at his ranch.

I agree Evo, Bush spends more time away from Washington than any President in a long time. He gets his month at his ranch every summer, then he takes all these side trips to Texas. Throw in Camp David, and when is he ever at the White House.

1 -- You aren't going to whistel show tunes wearing a mouth guard.

2 -- Who the hell wears mouth guards?

3 -- Kerry's joke was funny but I'd bet Bush could take him in a off road race so he'd do well to shut it up in the future.

4 -- Taking your bike off road is cool. Wounds acquired while in the act of this cool past time are proof of your coolness. GG Bush. (-2 for the mouth guard though)

Didn't Kerry just fall down off of his $5,000 bike becasue of sand in the road? Kerry is a classless as he is clueless. What an ass. Of course he has the beloved press covering for his a$$ as this was "off record". What a bunch of thinly veneered O jerk socialists.

Does the wave of froth emanating from your contorted mouth damage your screen? I mean....dude you've lost your mind, it's just a story about one guy falling off his bike while wearing a mouth guard and another who looks more out of place in physical activity then a cat does in a dog house making a stupid comment.

Some of you are reading way too much into what Kerry said. It was a joke, I don't think he meant it trying to 1 up the president, he was just making light of the situation. I would say something similar if it were a friend of mine, it wouldn't be mean spirited just some light hearted ribbing.

I do have to give ol' G.W. some credit though. 18 miles ... Damn, Rock On!

I agree.

I took what he said as a joke AND I was a bit impressed about how quick he was with that quip.

Funny comment.

They are rivals. The ability to use wit is good.

And, yes, GW does come back to Texas often. But hey, it is beautiful where he lives (about 1 2/2 hours from me) so I understand.

Blondie, that math looks a little "fuzzy." Did Al Gore figure that for you?
