OrangeSkin
This has been done before, but I figured we've gotten a lot of new members since then, so I wanted to get a consensus again. Plus I need to update my record collection and what better sampling to get than from the vast array of musical tastes here? List your top 10 albums of all-time. They shouldn't neccessarily be your favorites, but albums that are almost flawless on a technical level as well as having lasting impact and being just plain enjoyable to listen to. Here are mine: 1) Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles - untouchable, as far as I'm concerned. The perfect album. 2) Exile On Main St. - The Rolling Stones - Listening to this can be a spiritual experience if you're in the right mood. Pure rock & roll. Just bursting with energy. 3) The White Album - The Beatles - Most eclectic collection of songs ever recorded. 4) The Velvet Underground & Nico - The Velvet Underground - Edgy and artistic all at once. Basically invented alternative music. 5) Blonde on Blonde - Bob Dylan - Some of the greatest songwriting ever. 6) Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys - Wonderful to listen to. 7) Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd - Prog rock at its best; soothing, thought provoking, and a swift kick in the ass all at the same time. 8) Revolver - The Beatles - All around fantastic. 9) Sticky Fingers - The Rolling Stones - More varied than EOMS, with country, jazz, and even some psychadelia thrown in for good measure. Great ballads to go along with great rockers. 10) Abbey Road - The Beatles - the medley is an incredibly appropriate swan song. So there's my list. Now give me yours. Chrisbob74
1, Guns N' Roses - Appetite For Destruction, sleezy rock at it's best. 2, U2 - The Joshua Tree, still their finest moment, and With Or Without you is my fav song ever! 3, Metallica - Metallica, brought Metallica to the masses whilst benifitting from a better production but still staying true to their roots. 4 + 5, The Beatles - Red and Blue Albums, cheating a bit here but I love everything by The Beatles (from my hometown you know!) and these Albums are effectively everything by them. 5, Pink Floyd - The Wall, mellow anger! 6, Faith No More - Angel Dust, a lot of folks love "The Real Thing" as it has their best ever song (Epic) but this is a better (and darker) album to me. 7, Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of the Moon, timeless! 8, Marillion - Misplaced Childhood, mellow romantic angst (not sure this band were ever popular in the States). 9, Van Halen - The Best of (Live), can't be bother to go dig the CD out to check the proper title but this rocks, a live album you can play at a party! 10, Oasis - What's The Story (Morning Glory), it was all downhill for Oasis after this but a great gritty Rock N' Roll Record. Dan T.
Ten great ones, no particular order -Who's Next - The Who (Won't Get Fooled Again, Baba O'Riley, Behind Blue Eyes) -Blood on the Tracks - Bob Dylan (Tangled Up in Blue, Shelter From the Storm, Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go) -Joe Dirt Car - BoDeans live (best live album ever) -Songbird - Eva Cassidy (the purest voice you will ever hear, the voice of an angel, local DC girl who died tragically young) -Sweet Revenge - John Prine (poignant, fun songs with a simple voice and delivery. Kris Kristofferson praised Prine as one of the greatest songwriters alive) - Tupelo Honey - Van Morrison (the Man) - August and Everything After - Counting Crows (Ah the angst of Rain King) - Anthology - Ramones (Bubblegum Punk) - Greatest Hits - Sly and the Family Stone (Dance to the music everyday people) - Natty Dread - Bob Marley and the Wailers (Lively Up Yourself, No Woman No Cry)
Ancalagon the Black
Chrisbob--a 'pudlian who doesn't put the Fab Four at the top of the list? I'm sorely, sorely disappointed. My top 10 would be almost all Beatles, but I'll try to limit it so that a band can appear only once. I'll also restrict it to rock, to make it easier on myself. 1) Led Zeppelin, Remastered Box Set (cheating uproariously here!)--I cannot choose from Zep albums 2) Beatles, Rubber Soul, white album, or Abbey Road--RS was such a clutch album, The Beatles had so many moments of unsurpassed excellence, Abbey Road is sublime 3) Metallica, Master of Puppets--They had really hit their stride and only had one truly moving album left after this. 4) David Bowie, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars--Musical genius at his best. 5) Creedence Clearwater Revival, Chronicle--More cheating, but no single album has their good songs all in one place. 6) Sex Pistols, Never Mind the Bollocks...--Punk was never better, except maybe for... 7) The Clash, London Calling--Gotta love 'dem English boyz. 8) Queen, Greatest Hits--Keeping on cheating...no one in rock had a voice like Freddy. 9) Guns 'N' Roses, Appetite for Destruction--They struck gold with this one and were never the same afterwards. 10) AC/DC, Back in Black--The Bon Scott fan club will disagree, but I think this was Acca Dacca's best work. Ancalagon the Black
Peter Garrett always got on my nerves, and MAW is overrated. Sadly, most current Australian bands are just unbelievably bad.

TK
The Beatles : Sgt. Pepper's Queensryche : Operation:Mindcrime Perhaps the greatest prog rock concept album. Ever. Motley Crue : Too Fast For Love Sleazy gutter rock way before GNR & it just sounds so raw in its recording & production. Van Halen : Women & Children First Little Guitars. Nuff said. Led Zepplin : Houses Of The Holy Over The Hills & Far Away :notworthy: Bruce Springsteen : Born To Run Simply incredible from start to end. KISS : Destroyer The superheros of rock at the top of their game. Tool : Aenima Still can't seem to take it out of my cd rotation. Metallica : The Black Album aka Metallica Bob Rock's production. Black Sabbath : Paranoid Heavy Metal defined.
Montilar
He said; They shouldn't neccessarily be your favorites, but albums that are almost flawless on a technical level as well as having lasting impact and being just plain enjoyable to listen to. I could only provide what I like, not whether they were "perfect" or had an impact on other musicians. and my top ones would vary from day to day, mood to mood. IN no true ranking: 1) Enigma 1st or 2cd album is interchangeable 2) AC/DC Back In Black 3) Scorpians Love At First Sting/Blackout 4) Def Leppard Armegheddon/Pyromania 5) Kansas Leftoverture/Point of Know Return are equal 6) Boston Boston's 1st two albums are equal 7) Lynyrd Skynard (silver and platinum) greatest hits cheat 8) Doobie Brothers greatest hits cheat 9) The Eagles greatest hits1/2 cheat 10) U2 The Unforgettable Fire/Joshua tree albums 11) led Zeppelin (the stairway to heaven album) 12) Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) That leaves off Little River Band (greatest Hits), The Moody blues, Styx (paradise theatre), Grateful Dead, Foriegner (any), tommy shaw Ambition, Bob Seger, 38 Special, Nazareth (I love their two greatest hits albums I have; Hair of the dog is an awesome song), Pink Floyd, rush, Magnum (wings of Heaven)..... Collective soul, Bad company, ZZ Top, Mettalica, Picking ten is impossible. Now if you said pick ten heavy metal, ten soft rock, ten hard rock.... then maybe I could make better headway. semiskin
Beatles: Revolver-The beginning of the Beatles transition. Great blend of early and late Beatle tunes. Beatles: Sgt. Pepper-The production of this album was monumental, great varitaion of songs. "A day in the life", amazing tune. Led Zeppelin 1-The epitome of a rock n'roll. This album is rock n' roll. Perfect blend of rock, blues, folk music. As I said this album IS the Rock n' Roll. Dark Side of the Moon-Pink Floyd-Right up there with Sgt. Pepper in terms of originality in production. Roger Waters is a genius. Marvin Gaye-What's going On-One of the most soulful voices of all time. Very important album for that day and age. Bob Marley-Cath A Fire-The king of reggae. Amazing musician, amazing man. This album encompasses the true essence of reggae. Appetite for Destruction-Guns N Roses-First album I ever owned, I literaly listened to it for about a year. Still takes me back when ever I put it on. Pearl Jam 10-Great album from beginning to end. Great new sound for the time. Notorious BIG- Ready to Die-Hip-Hop's Classic album. I was just listening to this the other day and couldn't believe that it was over a decade old. If it was released today it would still kill. Jay-Z-Reasonable Doubt-Another hip-hop genius's first album. Great production and great rhymes. Classic.

Brave
Marillion - Brave (tells a story, best concept album I've ever heard. Steve Rothery is a guitar genius that few know about) Radiohead - OK Computer (after over 6 years I still listen to this regularly.) Fleetwood Mac - Rumours Led Zeppelin - II (bawdy and ballsy, the most imitated sound of all time perhaps?) Led Zeppelin - (Un-named - IV; more mature, polished zep) Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication Marillion - Misplaced Childhood Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon Pearl Jam - 10 (all great/very good songs) Guns N Roses - Appetite (dated but classic)
