Obviously known for her role as Uhura in Star Trek, being the first black woman put into a role that wasn't just a cleaning lady or maid, and partaking in that then-controversial interracial kiss with Shatner in the episode Plato's Stepchildren, she also helped NASA to recruit women into their ranks. LadySkinsFan
She was perfect in that role. It's one of the reasons Star Trek was so popular, a woman had an important leadership role. 1 1
Larry
Sorry to hear. Great respect, not just for the character, but for what she chose to do with her fame. 1
Riggo-toni
I'm not sure, but I think she'd been suffering from Alzheimer's for the last decade or so.

88Comrade2000
I saw her a few years ago; after her stroke. Got a pic and autograph.
LadySkinsFan
She played on one of the soaps a few years ago. The Young and the Restless I think. She played Neil's mother, and that was shortly before the actor playing Neil died. Kristoff St. John.

Great respect, not just for the character, but for what she chose to do with her fame. One of those things she chose to do was not leave the show as she had intended to do after the first season to pursue other career opportunities, because Martin Luther King Jr. convinced her how important it was for people to see her there as an officer on the bridge of the Enterprise. That it was more important for her to be up there than it was to join in the marches for civil rights. And history has proven him correct, I think both in normalizing their place in the future, and in giving kids a role model and something to aspire to.
