Because we lost alot of potential talent, and didn't replace the people we have now with someone better.

I'm trying to understand your phrasing. Potential talent as in young guys that could improve and develop further?

I suppose Tim Settle qualifies as he's just 25, but he barely played and we drafted Mathis in the 2nd round. Mathis has more potential talent than Settle.

Matt Ioannidis is 28, and with the Panthers still, but he is who is who he is at this point and there's no extra potential to develop there.

Deshazor Everett is 30 and out of the league

Darryl Roberts is 32 and out of the league

Landon Collins is 28 and out of the league

Jon Bostic is 31 and out of the league

Or are you upset about people we recently cut, thinking they could still develop and improve? Like Troy Apke or Khaleke Hudson? I'm not seeing the lots of potential talent we lost from the roster. Chase Young is hurt and recovering, we didn't lose him.

1991 or maybe 1999 or 2012.

Nah, the 2016 offense was very, very good.  The defense (Joe Barry Special) was putrid.  And Hopkins was brutal with late game kicks that year as well.

The other ones you mentioned would also qualify.  1991 being the best of all of the ones mentioned, and by a country mile.

I think it's interesting (and maybe important?) that one of the 2 CBs they claimed off of waivers is a rookie.

Ron is pounding the young guys.  I remember he said one thing he learned in Carolina was they were too reliant on veterans and hung onto them too long.  I wonder if he's just doing a 180 here.

Somebody will come out with the average age for every team eventually.  We've got to be in the top-10 of youngest teams.  Maybe even top-5.

Fields and Wildgoose seem to have some physical tools, but if this is all we do prior to the season.....Sigh......

So these two guys go to the 53 man?  The corresponding moves will be Hodges (per Kiem) and who?

Probably Robinson...or Dejon Harris.

That's a good question.  Could be the last LB, who JP thinks is the 50th guy on the roster.

BRob going to NFI would also do it.

At the end of yesterday, it was 27 offense, 23 defense and 3 specialists.  That's got to even out.  Hodges is one, but I think there will be another offensive guy who goes away in some way.

They had their pick, they are going with younger guys instead of veterans.  I don't have a problem with it, really.

You really don't want your 4th -6th  DBs playing a lot.  When that happens, you're typically in trouble to begin with.

If you add McCain as a slot corner, our CBs don't look as bad as it seems.

This is a point which should not be lost: McCain was playing nickel corner for the Dolphins more than safety before we signed him.

Ron loves his position flex.

The safety group is actually pretty deep, with McCain, Curl, Butler and Reaves.

The problem is our #1 CB was bad last year and our #3 CB is unproven.

The full thread has lots of clips from his college games. Still going through it but basically he looks like a press man corner or a deeper safety. Doesn't seem like he's figured out how to handle off coverage yet. Read some comments (hearsay) suggesting his stats in college in press and in off coverage were kind of the opposite of each other.

Look, depth is really important, but not as important as health.  Most teams can stand to lose a guy or two per position, and the primary backup can fill in.

However, if you start getting to the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th guy down the roster, eh, no team has that kind of depth.

Example:  If Leno or Cosmi go down, Lucas can fill in and that's great.  If Leno AND Lucas go down, and you have Lucas and Charles at Tackle, then Rouiller goes down, so you have Schweitzer at Center and Chris Paul at guard ...  Now you're talking about something that is difficult to overcome.

For the CBs, my guess is what would happen is if Fuller or WJIII go down, St. Juste bumps outside, and McCain goes to the nickel corner, and they might play 4 safeties a bit.

The problem really comes in if you lose 2 CBs and 2 Safeties.  And honestly, there's just not much you can do about that.  No team has that kind of depth.

WJIII was much better towards the end of the year, and hasn't looked bad in camp.

The #3 was pretty good until getting hurt.

We'll see, it could be a debacle, it could be fine.

That said, they were not going to sign another starting CB this off-season after the debacle of switching 3 out last year and it taking half a year for them to figure out how to play defense together.  It just wasn't going to happen.  They spent money on WJIII and Fuller, and they need them to play well.  If WJIII doesn't play well this year, he'll be released at the end of the season and they'll have to get somebody else.

Agreed I feel if we played McCain in the nickel and our DB core would look decent with fuller/jackson/McCain.  Now if we could get some great zone defending MLB we would be in good shape.

If it's bottom 3 with the schedule they play, JDR will be fired and Rivera should go with him.

I mean, where have we upgraded? We were pretty bad last year with Chase and Collins. I don't feel like we made any upgrades at LB or secondary, so again, feels like this year will be more of the same.

Our offense should be noticeably more potent, but it won't matter if we're giving up 30 points a game.

Why?? The defense was much better second half of the year last year before Covid derailed everything and we were playing guys off the street.

I don't think we were that much better. First 8 games we gave up 28 PPG. Second 8 games (less the Giants game) we gave up 25 PPG.
