Building the 2020 Roster

In this thread, we're going to assume that Bruce Allen has been fired and the new GM has decided to build for winning in 2020 and beyond. He is OK with losing badly in 2019 as a side effect of this.  We're going to review each current player and his contract, compare the additional cost and benefit of keeping that player into 2020, and decide what should be done with the player this off-season.

A basic concept that people should apply in this thread is that dead cap money isn't a concern, because that money is already gone, no matter what we do.  We will need to take the cap hit sooner or later, hopefully in 2019.  Same deal with money that is already guaranteed. Only new cash payments matter, because we have a choice about those.  If you have trouble with that concept, this is not the right thread for you.

Feel free to bring up players you think we should pick up in free agency this year.  For high-dollar free agents, you will have to justify why you think it is worth paying them for a 2019 season where we are not going to contend.

There is a separate thread for the 2019 draft, so discussion of specific college players isn't appropriate here.  But it's fine to say "cut X and draft his replacement"

Please post your coach/trainer/facilities/owner comments in another thread.  Non-players don't count against the cap or have trade value, so they aren't relevant to this discussion.

I'm going to do this by position group, starting with defense and saving QBs for last.  I'll post a new group every few days after the previous discussion dies down.

I am using https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/washington-redskins/contracts/ as my source for roster and contracts.

Safeties

Player: HaHa Clinton-Dix
https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/washington-redskins/haha-clinton-dix-14430/
Contract: Free agent after this season.
Performance: Potential talent.  Sucked for the Packers and sucked for us too.
Age in 2020: 27
Recommendation:  Let him test the market.  If his price is low enough, and the new DC thinks he develop him, we could keep him.  Most likely we let him walk and take the comp pick.

Player: Montae Nicholson
https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/washington-redskins/montae-nicholson-21865/
Contract: On 4th round rookie contract through 2020.
Performance: Got benched.  Has potential.  At worse, a depth/teams guy.
Age in 2020: 24
Recommendation:  Could be a great trade piece.  The other team gets an NFL caliber player for cheap in 2019 and 2020, we get a pick we can use to draft the next Montae Nicholson (or better).   If we don't get a good trade offer, he's an easy keep.

Player: Troy Apke
https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/washington-redskins/troy-apke-25210/
Contract: On 4th round rookie contract through 2020.
Performance: Showed potential, injured most of the year.
Age in 2020: 25
Recommendation:  Easy keep.

Player: Deshazor Everett
https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/washington-redskins/deshazor-everett-17050/
Contract: 2019 is the last year of his contract.  Will cost $1.35M.
Performance: I can't remember the last time I heard his name during a game.
Age in 2020: 28
Recommendation:  Trade for any pick.  Otherwise I'd think hard about cutting him instead of spending the $1.35M.

Player: D.J. Swearinger
https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/washington-redskins/d.j.-swearinger-12338/
Contract: 2019 is the last year of his contract.  Will cost $4.5M.
Performance: 50 tackles, 3 FF, 4 int.
Age in 2020: 29
Recommendation:  This is the first tough decision.  If you think he's an important part of the defense in 2020 and beyond, you need to extend him now.  Otherwise, you trade him to save the $4.5M.  Making him play out a contract year on a terrible 2019 Redskins team does nothing for us.

Here's why that is bad: It costs $4.5M and does nothing for us in 2020 and beyond. Better to save that money/cap.

He should be tradeable. I wouldn't cut him to save 4.5 mil when I feel like someone's going to end up giving us something for him. He's a probably a decent guy to have in the locker room anyway.

If we trade him, the new team pays the $4.5M, so yeah that's a great option. They would most likely want to negotiate an extension with him prior to the trade.

I wouldn't pay $4.5M for that.

Player: HaHa Clinton-Dix
Just let him go and take the 5th or 6th rd compensatory.

Player: Montae Nicholson
He's on a cheap rookie deal but he was the worst rated safety in the NFL by PFF before he was benched, this is his 2nd year and he hasn't progressed.  I don't know why another team would want him in a trade so I think he's here one more year because of his athletic ability, we don't have enough good safeties to cost him his job, even if we got a stud in free agency or the draft he would still probably be retained for depth.

Player: Troy Apke
Give him another year and see if he can stay healthy.  You have to get more looks at this kid because of his athletic ability.

Player: Deshazor Everett
Unless he's been lights out on special teams we can cut him and save almost $1.3M in cap space, find a rookie to do what he does (shouldn't be difficult)  and the net savings will be at least $1M.

Player: D.J. Swearinger
I think DJ ran his mouth too much and may get traded if the FO and coaching staff remains the same, he's played well at times but the defense should be ashamed for quitting, it's childish and shows a lack of character.  He stuck his foot in his mouth and he's become annoying, we could save $4.5M in cap by cutting him but if we get a new regime I think he stays.

If he got any support from management, he'd probably be much less talkative.  All he wants out of life is for guys to care and work hard.  He's just ahead of his time here, cuz he'll be gone, then a new regime will try to instill the principles he lamented Gruden couldn't.

My concern is, I feel like if he loses a step, he's finished.

HaHa was 4th rated safety by PFF at the time of the trade...I would take those ratings with a grain of salt...

I specifically said QBs last because that topic tends to take over the entire thread and drown out all other discussion, as we have seen many times on this board.

I was planning to post my analysis of the cornerbacks tomorrow at work, but if anyone else wants to get started, here they are:

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/washington-redskins/josh-norman-9964/   (very easy cut.  No trade value IMO)

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/washington-redskins/quinton-dunbar-17456/

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/washington-redskins/fabian-moreau-21823/

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/washington-redskins/adonis-alexander-27663/

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/washington-redskins/greg-stroman-25342/

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/washington-redskins/danny-johnson-25633/

I only ask... look at the contracts before you decide keep, trade, dump.
