Dan T.
Interesting dynamic that Jerry Seinfeld - stand-up comic and show creator - actually played straight man most of the time and let his co-stars get most of the laughs.

Kinda like Mary Tyler Moore and Bob Newhart on their respective, eponymous programs (and to a certain extent, Queen Latifah on "Living Single" since she had already made a name for herself as a rapper). I actually think most of seasons 1-3 were meh. It wasnt until the network had more confidence in Larry David that the episodes got better and better probably around season 4. By the end, they were basically letting Larry and Jerry do whatever in the hell they wanted, and thats when it just became incredible. Compare that to Cosby, Cheers, Mash, etc.... all got worse over time imo Dont forget Kenny Rogers chicken, muffin tops, and the Merv Griffin show! S1-2 = meh S3 = solid S4 onward = amazing and when the show went from ratings loser to pulling in 25-30 million a night. The show within a show concept in S4 when they are pitching Seinfeld is AMAZING.

It's rare when this happens, but the great ones do it well. Look at the Jeopardy sketch, Will Ferrell is the straight man, and it's one of the funniest bits in SNL History.
