I'm not against a one-year deal for him.

 

Sign Mathis, stick him next to Scherff. Allow a true litmus test of RG3.

 

Next year, let him hit free agency. Long has matured at that point, Kounjiao(spelling) will have a year under his belt as well. They can step in and we either have RG3 behind center or we have moved on, but at least we will know.

If we could get Evan Mathis for a 1 year deal for 3.5 mill, would you do it?  I think I would.  Again, you have to find out who your QB is this year, you lose a little bit of cap you could transfer to next year, but you gain a better chance to evaluate your QBs.

The problem would be getting Mathis to settle for 3.5 million. :)

IIRC, he was due 5.5 million from the Eagles this season, and he called that an "insult". :)

Mathis seems like a guy getting ready to go on the downside of his NFL career, and is looking for one more big payday.

Seems like Redskins stopped doing business like that a while ago.

I'd rather see what the young guys have before we just stick them on the shelf for a 34-year old FA.

For me, if the coaches think Long is ready, then don't sign Mathis. I'm even at the point of, if they think Long will be ready by the second or third game of the season, then let him play.

 

I'd rather not stop our young guys from getting the chance to learn and grow into a solid starter. If we were "close" then I'd say, "sure sign Mathis to get us over the top," but since we're building a roster, I'd rather not let the young guys sit on the bench and instead let them learn what they need to, get their knocks, and be our next great/good OL for the next 10 years.
