Galloping Crocodiles Ate Dinosaurs In North Africa

The Cretaceous era was a truly terrifying place, with galloping crocodiles capable of giving the better-known dinosaurs a run for their money. A documentary on the giant crocodiles of the era will screen on December 20th.

In 2009, National Geographic expeditions to Morocco and Niger revealed three new species of 100-million-year-old crocodiles, formally described in Zookeys

The first specimen unearthed of Kaprosuchus saharicus would have been 6.5-meters-long (21 feet). Combined with three sets of sharp tusks and a snout that could probably have been used as a sort of battering ram, this must have been the stuff of nightmares for the beasts of the time. While it is thought that K. saharicus fed mainly on dinosaurs, our ancestral mammals probably had plenty of reason to be afraid.

I think this movie, like many, will be "good" if you don't go into it trying to be critical.  Will certain creatures look CG?  Sure.  Will some actions by some characters not make sense at the time?  Probably.

But like with the Star Wars crossguard that has now become famous, if we approach it with a more open mind, willing to accept it initially until we can more closely examine it, we'll probably enjoy it more.  The crossguard could be made of a lightsaber resistant material (they exist), or it could be one blade diffracted at 90 degree angles as Colbert postulated.

Similarly, the genetically created dinosaur might not be as far fetched as we might initially think.  If we can make glow in the dark cats, and resurrect pseudo-dinosaurs (in that universe) then the concept of a genetically engineered hybrid dinosaur isn't too crazy.

Trained raptors are probably similar.  Dogs are evolved from wolves.  Admittedly, that evolution occurred over many generations, but with the science in the universe, it isn't inconceivable that such training over a couple generations could occur.

Suspend disbelief when dealing with these movies.

The bigger issue I have with JP, is that it tries to be family friendly while being a thriller about cold blooded creatures hunting people down (while also making statements about playing God and the like).  There's some conflict between those.  They introduce kids to help bridge the gap, and they do, but it's a very tough line to walk.  The original JP did it.  2 only had 1 kid, and 3 didn't walk that line as well.  Other movies have a similarly tough time.

I'd like a JP that was pure horror, combining aspects of Resident Evil 1, 2, and 3 (the games, not the movies) (and some dino crisis).

Imagine a town near a big forest/mountain.  Hikers start disappearing, their bodies found later mangled.  Pictures taken at night showing large two-legged lithe creatures start rolling in from townfolk.  A man who lives in the mountains and periodically makes trips into the town doesn't show up for a while, and when the police check on his log cabin it's been completely demolished.

A jogger is jogging along at night with her dog, and something is watching her.  Something chases her.  The dog makes it home, she doesn't.

A farmer hears his cows ramming the fences and mooing loudly.  He shines his spotlight onto the field, and boom T-Rex.

The rest of the movie is one part horror, one part thriller, one part mystery.  Many flee the town, and with less opposition, raptors start descending.  They become bolder.  People start getting hunted in their own homes.  Another group receives information that the "source" of the dinosaurs is in the mountains, and a reporter goes after it.  He discovers a hidden facility, apparently designed to create dinosaurs for war for the highest bidder, abandoned, with the InGen logo plastered in the lobby.  (Hit on the "man can't control nature aspect here, we tried to breed dinosaurs we could control for war, and it backfired magnificently)

The rest of the movie follows more RE2/3, with InGen sending in a team to scrub everyone and everything from the land.  People get shot and they have to survive both the squads and the dinos.  We see Raptors vs. SWAT-like teams facing off in cat and mouse games.  Also, at some point, I want a raptor vs. grizzly bear brawl.  Maybe a pack of wolves versus a pack of raptors too.  Or have wolves trying to bring down a stegosaurus or something.  Really get the old dinos vs. new animals thing going once or twice.

A genetically engineered dino shows up, but instead of for entertainment, it's designed for war.  Made to navigate forests and survive attacks by heavier weapons like RPGs with an armored hide.  It just eats everything, demolishes cars, etc.

All the while survivors are trying to escape, with the reporter trying to get the story out of the town (communications cut off by inGen, cell towers demolished or something).

Anyways, that's how I'd do it, but their way sounds cool too.

Haha, I'll pen it right after finals are over...and before next semester's start...so like, in a week or not at all, haha.

Yeah, the suspense was a huge, the kitchen scene is iconic for all the right reasons.  The water ripple scene too, you just know something big is coming.

Like, has anyone ever been out late at night, just walking a dog or something, and though "how freakin' scary would it be is Velociraptors (movie incarnation) were alive today and were stalking me?"  Or, if you're ever at the end of a long street where you can see street lamps from far away, "how terrifying would it be if a T-Rex just strolled under one of those far off street lamps and looked in your general direction?"
