Here's What Cole Field House Looks Like Now

When last we checked in on the construction at Cole Field House, construction crews had just begun breaking ground after removing all of the seats, which are being sold as memorabilia for 10 more days. We've got a new look at how the interior of how the place looks a couple months into its transformation from historic basketball arena to ultramodern indoor football and academic facility.

As you might have noticed, the playing area has been gutted from floor to stands. But why so much light beaming in from the far end? This is why:

The facade has been torn almost entirely off the of the building on the Maryland Stadium-end of Cole, which is about three months into construction. The first phase of Maryland's efforts to create a state-of-the-art $155 facility (full details here) is expected to be completed in spring 2017, with two more phases to come thereafter.

The project is already helping first-year head coach D.J. Durkin, who's been able to show recruits the site of a future home that will compare to some of the best football buildings in the facility-rich Big Ten; Maryland football's recruiting class ranks 15th nationally and fifth in the Big Ten in the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Durkin’s recruiting expertise setting up Maryland for championship success

D.J. Durkin doesn’t care about Maryland’s record last season or that it plays in one of the toughest divisions in college football right now. He has no reservations about raising the level of expectation in College Park.

“I’ve made it very clear to our guys, as part of our mission statement, that we’re here to win championships,” Durkin told USA Today Sports. “We’re not going to say it shyly or kind of embarrassed.”

A championship is something that has eluded the Terrapins for the past 15 years.

They took the ACC crown in 2001, finishing the regular season with a 10-1 record before getting clobbered by Florida in the Orange Bowl.

Now, a decade-and-a-half removed from any gridiron hardware, Durkin is laying the groundwork to align the team’s instituted maxim with reality.

“We wanted someone with a strong background who had a great winning pedigree, and we wanted someone who was going to be a national and a great recruiter,” said Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson on the day of Durkin’s hire. “Most importantly, we wanted someone who had a winning attitude and came from a winning culture.”

Durkin has proven himself early in his tenure in College Park.

Through mid-May, Maryland owns the nation’s 12th-best recruiting class and ranks third in the Big Ten according to Rivals.com. Durkin has commitments from nine players, including five-star defensive end Josh Kaindoh and a pair of four-star prospects, quarterback Kasim Hill and defensive tackle Camaron Spence.

Last year, the Terps brought in the nation’s 40th-ranked class. Obviously there will be some fluctuation in commitments and rankings between spring and February of 2017, but Durkin is currently on pace to land Maryland’s highest-rated group in the school’s history.

He made the right choice. Really happy to have him back.

Team will be interesting next year. Championship caliber? Not likely. But talented undoubtedly.

It'll be interesting to see Turgeon coach this squad next season. They've lost a ton of size, and have only Cekovsky and Dodd, possibly Bender. Not a lot of offensive presence inside.

Have some nice wing and guard options though, and both the bigs can get up and down the court. Hope to see a more up tempo offense, get easy buckets in transition.

I'm not a huge fan of Turgeon as a gameday coach, I hope he proves me wrong next season.

A Testudo Times writer said Melo is leaning towards staying, sd he would be shocked if he went into the draft.

Also waiting to hear about commitment from canadian 6'7" swing man Justin Jackson to the terps.

Yeah. That SF position is just waiting for him. :)

Both @coreyevans_10 & @jerrymeyer247 put in CB's this evening (within 3 mins of each other) for MD to land Justin Jackson. 1f914.png1f422.png

Turg was on the radio this AM. He's obviously relieved to have Melo back. I think his take was the Cowan on the floor at the same time will allow Mello to get his own shot easier with or without the ball. Said Cowan's speed and D is going to play with that very well. Also talked up Huerter.

If they land Jackson for this class coming in. That's really amazing.

BREAKING: Top-40 Recruit Justin Jackson Picks Maryland

Yesterday Mark Turgeon found out his star point guard was coming back. And today, his top remaining high school recruit announced his commitment. Top-40 forward Justin Jackson is a Terp.

With at least four of five of his starters from last season leaving school, Turgeon entered the middle of the offseason in need of immediate reinforcements, but also facing a market lacking many high-quality options. Today, though, Turgeon reeled in one of the few upper-level prospects available when the 6-foot-7 Jackson announced his pledge to the Terps -- which came yesterday, according to InsideMDSports sources.

Jackson, a Canada native ranked the sixth-best small forward and No. 40 prospect overall in the high school Class of 2016, switched his commitment from UNLV -- where he committed a year-and-a-half ago -- to Maryland , where he officially visited in late April. Jackson, who becomes the fourth member of Turgeon's 2016 class, is a major addition from Turgeon, especially late in the recruiting cycle, and should help fill the vacancies created by departing forwards Jake Layman and Robert Carter.
