The Redskins: Total Team Analysis

Damn, KDawg. Great job as always! Didn't know that you got to speak with Perry Riley personally; that's pretty cool.

Got to walk around the locker room. Part of the job. I broke down the audio I got, though, and murf's stuff was better. I had some GREAT talks with Riley (short) and Hurt (a bit longer) but I don't have proper editing software. When I get a chance I'll post the conversations. Short and sweet. I also talked to Hall, Fletcher, Gano, Hall and Brown. They were all cool. But they didn't tell me anything that they didn't say in Murf's audio or they didn't say anything important. My Riley/Hurt stuff is a bit different though. Love both those guys. Hope they both stick around.

I'm sorry for the dicks who contribute nothing but a drive-by criticism. That's frustrating to see in a thread like this.

Eh, part of the territory. But thanks.

I like what you, thesubmittedone, and wildbill had to say, even if I don't agree with all of it. I do think that we're passing more than we're running because of the two reasons that you put: A) We're losing a lot of the time and B) Kyle throws it. The balance that he showed yesterday was incredible. Sure, you're gonna get people who say it was against a bad defense, but those are the people who would whine about a 19-0 record not being sustainable the following year.

I agree with ya, NC!

I'd disagree with wildbill about our depth, at least at receiver. Moss, Gaffney, Hankerson, Paul, Anderson, and Armstrong all look like keepers. I'd love to keep Austin, too.

I'm actually questioning Armstrong's role. But then again, I was never all that high on him. *shrug*

Wow, I didn't know that you had a job involving that. Very, very jealous. I've never met a player while he's playing the game. In fact, I've only met Manley, Clark, and Mackenzie, and that was all at the awesome season opener last year.

Still very annoying even for those of us who are looking for a real discussion, but we carry on . . .

I've actually been keeping a tally of how many times people agree with me on this board. After that, it's up to one.

Yeah, sorry, I didn't put them in my depth chart:

Hankerson, Paul, Moss, Gaffney, Anderson, Armstrong. I'm very disappointed in Armstrong this year. There are times that you forget he's on the team, just like Atogwe.

I think Gaffney has proven his value, Moss is Moss(it may be time?), I don't know what happened to Armstrong this year, I like Anderson and I don't know where this Stallworth suddenly came from. I think that Hankerson, Paul or Austin could certainly could develop, and one or two could be long term answers. But any WR is going to look better with a QB that can throw the ball to them accurately and in stride. That QB needs time, the team needs a solid OL next year to go anywhere.

It's the ES Coverage stuff. Did the Steelers preseason game and the Jets game last week. I feel bad for NoLeafClover. He does an outstanding job and doesn't get much feedback. I think he makes me look like a chump, honestly. :)

I'm very high on David Anderson. VERY high on him. He's a football player. He's not flashy, he's not fancy, hell, he's not even that quick... But he runs GREAT routes, reads defenses well and has solid hands. He's someone we need to sign to a longer term deal and have stick around.

Well some converse and some adverse, par for the board.

I have agreed with you once, just now, but still. hahhaaa

I think that we'll see Hankerson and Paul for sure. Hell, they could keep Paul on as a run blocking specialist. I think that Stallworth just had a good game like Torrain with the Rams.

Ah, didn't know that you were a part of that. I do like NLC's stuff, I just don't see him post much anymore.

As for Anderson, I haven't seen enough to say anything and am probably not looking for what you're looking for.

Well some converse and some adverse, par for the board.

Well played, sir.

Running game as a strength

I think our success running has come from our propensity/desire to pass. I'm not sold on Helu yet, but he's getting it done and looking good doing it. I don't think teams are game planning for the run game yet.

passing game

I love Grossman's confidence and grasp of the playbook. If he didn't turn the ball over so much, we'd have something. That said, teams are gameplanning to stop/harass him. Grossman will beat you if you let him get comfortable.

Kyle has designed an excellent passing game. With KS I don't think you need a top QB; the Redskins can win with a guy who knows the offense, strong arm, and can move (in that order).

Hankerson was our lastest hope at a star wideout, and it will take some luck and hard work for him to come back the same or better. I think KS's passing game can compensate for average wideouts.

defense

Haslett sucks. :ols: Seriously, the unit as least LOOKS better than last year. We've improved in some categories but points has to improve. Still don't get why we don't play bump and run, at least once in a while.

The safety positions need starters who can play the whole season.

The DL and LB groups need work but I like how they have evolved. It will be interesting to see how they look next year.

special teams

IAverage unit overall balanced by a good punter and talented but below average kicker. I say we give Gano another year.

coaching

Mike is like all good leaders. He makes horrible decisions, corrects them at his own pace, and acts like it was all part of his master plan. Right or wrong, that's how you're supposed to do it.

Time and time again, as numerous fans have noted ... the Redskins really need to overhaul their roster. They have a lot of folks who are either simply past their prime, or not playing upto their true potential.

1/ QB -- Grossman and Beck are not the answer. At best, they are backups. Personally, I would like the Skins to draft a Franchise QB. Not make a stretch play like they did with Patrick Ramsey (not a 1st round pick, and we pushed to get him in round 1), and Jason "soup" Campbell (gave up a 1st, 3rd, and 4th rounder). We need to get some one who is going to play the position for the next 10 odd years, and is talented ...

2/ WRs - We need playmakers. Love Santana, but he is getting slow, and makes bad plays when the game is on the line. We need tall, speedy, physical receivers -- guys like Austin Miles, Dez Bryant, Greg Jennings ... And, we need 3 to 4 such receiver of this caliber. The roster has no one that is a standout.

3/ O-Line -- need to plug in some holes. Jamaal Brown out to be replaced. He isn't a good RT, and more often than not is a liability on the field. Need to get better across the board, and get young talented dominating O-Linemen, and a stable of quality backups.

4/ RB -- Love Helu, and he shows promise. But, we need someone with power, and speed. A guy like Marshawn Lynch, Adrian Peterson.

5/ Kicker - Gano is not the answer. He is not clutch, and when it comes to kicks 40 plus, he is 50/50.

6/ D-Line - In my humble opinion, the 3-4 experiment isn't working all that well. We need a stud NT and DT, We need to let players play their natural game. Would love to see Kerrigan, and Orakpo play DE.

7/ LBs - This is the one of the weakest links. Other than London, or LBs are average. As stated before, would like Kerrigan and Orakpo to play their natural position as DEs. We need to get LB that can create havoc in the run and passing game ala Ray Lewis.

8/ DBs - Hall, Wilson and Barnes are playmakers. However, they need to be more disciplined. We need good quality backup DBs to play Nickel and Dime.

9/ Safety - This is another weak link. We really need someone to step up and support Landry to create a good tandem. Landry need to play his natural position.

10/ KR/PR - Let's face it ... We all love Brandon, and root for him. However, the reality is that he isn't cutting it. We need someone bigger, taller, faster, and more physical who can break tackles and take it to the house. Ted Ginn, or someone along those lines.

Haven't seen AA lately. Saw him in some plays yesterday but he's hardly on the field. Is he done with us after this season?

2012 - Gafney, Moss, Hankerson, Paul, and ???

I think Austin, Stallworth, Armstrong and Anderson all bring their own strengths. Ultimately, you want a guy that'll be where he's supposed to and will move the chains. Speed and size are a plus, just not quite as important as consistency and execution.

I agree with KDawgs assessment of Anderson, he'd be helpful to a young QB. Like the others too though, we just need the guy that can go deep. Here's hoping Hank or Armstrong (or FA or draftee) can fill that role.
