[Editor's note: For those who still haven't heard the news, I've started writing a weekly sports column for SB Nation DC. So every Tuesday, my contribution to society (or at least the D.C. sports scene) is located over there.]

Now that the World Cup has come and gone and ESPN’s shameful slurping of the LeBron-a-thon is mercifully over, it’s almost that time again folks.

Before you know it, it’ll be time for training camp – a wonderful time of year where fans from 31 cities optimistically believe this could be the year something special happens with their favorite football franchise (only Cleveland is downtrodden enough not to get their hopes up).

There are a few staples of this time of year.

There’s the new sheriff in town (Mike Shanahan). There’s the veteran player hoping to rejuvenate his career as he finds himself in a new city for the first time (Donovan McNabb). There’s the disgruntled holdout, who is unhappy with his contract or something else and isn’t in a hurry to show up for work until someone fixes the problem and/or cuts him a new check (Albert Haynesworth). And then there’s the “Rudy.”

You know what I’m talking about: the underdog who seemingly comes from nowhere to become the feel-good story of training camp.

In the past, unheralded players such as Jesse Lumsden, Jimmy Farris and, most recently, Marko Mitchell have filled that role for the Washington Redskins. (I’d include Colt Brennan on the list, but honestly, his fanatical fanbase kind of scares me).

Well, with camp just around the corner, I wanted to go ahead and point you in the direction of the newest member to the club.

Ladies and gentlemen, meet Anthony Armstrong.

Sure, most of you have never heard of him and couldn’t pick him out of a police lineup if he was wearing his jersey, but that’s not going to stop you from falling in love with the guy in about two or three weeks.

Why Armstrong?

Well, he's not too tall, but this

"It would mean the world to me," he said. "Just being a part of this organization when they take on my hometown Dallas Cowboys in that great rivalry would be really fun. It would be nice to get to go down to Dallas and stick it to them a few times. We’ll see what happens and see if I’m here Week One, but that would be a dream come true."

is some good campaign work.

Good luck to Armstrong in making the team, but I think the odds are 80 percent that Shanahan makes a move for a veteran wide receiver before the season.

In fact because of the learning curve in a new offense I wouldn't be surprised if the move occurred either right before camp or before the first preseason game.

There is no way Galloway, Wade or Furrey is going to take up the load of a productive #2 wide receiver in the NFL in 2010.

Everyone keeps lumping those three together, guess because they are all vets. I posted some stuff about Wade and I think he has the best shot. He is only 28-29 and has had production up until KC last year. He is good at returns and has speed. Not to take away from the great article on Armstrong and the annual mancrush, but I really don't think we can count anyone out or in. Other than probably Santana and Thomas is any other wideout a lock?

He's not tall enough to be a preseason man crush. Where is Anthony Mix?

I dunno ... bagging groceries with Taylor Jacobs and other previous man-crushes?

Without watching any of the new receivers actually play, I also said that Wade had the best chance to impact the roster. Problem is, every time we get to watch a practice, he's basically nonexistent. I don't think Galloway can do anything except go deep, but he shows up more in practice than Wade does.

Hopefully he makes some plays in training camp or preseason. Otherwise, we really are going to need someone like Armstrong to save the day. Either way, thanks for the comment.

For that Dallas game Shanahan is going to be looking for more than what Bobby Wade or Joey Galloway can deliver at this point of their careers.

Wade was released by the worst offense in the AFC in Kansas City.

And he is supposed to be part of the answer here?

Maybe as a kick returner and special teams player.

And THAT is fine.

Let's just avoid naming him as a guy that might help McNabb establish the passing game for the Redskins.

This is exactly why I am REALLY hoping Armstrong earns himself a roster spot and makes enough of an impact during the preseason to get some playing time. So that we have a semi-long term answer at WR besides the potential of DT and MK.

I hope that I spend all preseason praising Grossman and Brennan on their passes to Armstrong.
