The Redskins' draft surprise could be the move we thought they'd make months ago.

AOL's Dan Graziano reports that the Redskins are still in negotiations with the Rams to possibly trade up to the No. 1 overall pick in an effort to draft Sam Bradford.

PFT hears that the Browns are still more likely than the Redskins to move up.

Still, this isn't the first we've heard of Mike Shanahan's appreciation for Bradford. We heard earlier this offseason they wanted to deal for Bradford, but they weren't convinced it was possible. They made the trade for Donovan McNabb because it was a sure thing.

In a trade up scenario, Bradford would play behind McNabb for the remaining year on McNabb's contract. The Redskins don't have many other picks to give up, so veterans Albert Haynesworth and LaRon Landry could be part of the deal.

The Rams remain the favorite to wind up with Bradford, but their unwillingness to negotiate a contract before the draft has allowed them to entertain all possibilities on draft day. And cause some folks to wonder how much they really want to take him.

To move, the Rams would likely have to take a lot less than similar moves for the top pick in the past.

Nope.

No chance we trade up for this. No need to. Frankly, this story is something that you'd see all the time prior to this year. The Redskins being used to scare someone else into making a dumb move because doing so, with our reputation for being impulsive and big spending, could influence someone else.

Like last year with the Denver situation where we were used to get Chicago to pay more. We are not looking to trade up. However, I suspect we are being clear with the league, Bradford falls no lower than 4 if he gets past one.

I don't see it happening either. Why would we? If we didn't just get McNabb I'd be all for it. But why would we trade up to get a QB? Then there would be almost zero chance of McNabb signing an extension which means we just gave the Eagles those picks for nothing. If we do get a QB it'll be in a later round.

So they are suggesting we would trade Haynesworth and/or Landry and or Campbell to SWAP the #4 and #1 picks? Are you freaking kidding me? The only way that goes down is if it is a straight trade, players for pick. We're not giving up all that to move up 3 spots in a draft.

Check my post from yesterday about Haynesworth and the #4 and Campbell going to the Rams for that #1 pick. All so we can have Bradford sit behind McNabb for a two years.

Yeah, I saw it. It makes sense. McNabb could start for 2 years and the Shanahan's could groom Bradford to be the eventual starter. God forbid if McNabb gets injured which eventually he does every year we have a Potential Franchise QB waiting in the wings. I'm all for taking T. Williams as well but maybe Redskins mamngement knows that the OL is not the real problem based on a Injuries, a bad conditioned team, a QB who leave plays on the field, questionable playcalling by the head coach, and the list goes on. I say make it happen. Give them AH the 4th pick and maybe a 2011 2nd & 3rd rd picks. If shanahan thinks McNabb is just a short term solution you get Bradford.

I personally think Shanahan believes McNabb is his quarterback for the next 3-5 years. I don't think he's really that gung ho to draft one this season because he knows he can put that off for 2-4 years. Why blow you wad on a QB with this many question marks when you can find one in the next several drafts that are more of the "sure thing" variety.
