DEFEAT!

Cowboys 7 - Redskins 6

11/22/09

:helmet:

Hello everyone and welcome. We are coming to you (semi-) live from Jerry's World - also known as Cowboys Stadium - deep in the heart of Texas. My name is murf, and it is an absolute pleasure to be working this weekend with the man, the myth, the legend known as Art. We only get him out of his man cave a couple of times each year, so make sure you get your fill of him today. There's no guessing when he'll deem us all worthy of another public appearance.

And we should be in for a good one. The Washington Redskins versus the Dallas Cowboys. One team is in first place. The other is in last. One team is 6-3. The other is 3-6. But anyone familiar with this rivalry can assure you of this - throw out the records when these two teams play. Cowboys tight end Jason Witten might have said this game is the Super Bowl for the Redskins, but rest assuredly, the Cowboys really want to win this game too.

While the Redskins-Cowboys rivalry needs no additional hype, this game has plenty of subplots. Last week, backup running back Ladell Betts became the most popular guy in town - thanks to his 26 carries for 114 yards and a touchdown in the Redskins' 27-17 win over the Denver Broncos. Taking nothing away from Clinton Portis, who is out with a concussion, folks around town universally agree that Betts provided a spark that has largely been missing with the Redskins' running game. The question of the day is - can Betts do it again against the Cowboys?

And while the burgundy and gold trotted out their fifth incarnation of an offensive line this season, the Levi Jones-Derrick Dockery-Casey Rabach-Chad Rinehart-Stephon Heyer line actually looked okay. They weren't perfect, but they were better than what the 'Skins have had for much of this season.

On the other side of the ball, the Cowboys have two question marks in their lineup today. With tackle Mark Columbo out of action, someone named Doug Free will make his first career start. Also, with safety Ken Hamlin sidelined, the Cowboys are hoping for a strong showing by Alan Ball, who is also making his first NFL start. The Redskins stopped taking shots down field weeks ago, so Ball might be safe, but expect Free to have his hands full with rookie linebacker/defensive end Brian Orakpo.

With seven sacks, Orakpo already set a Redskins rookie record for sacks with half the season to go. Expect him to be highly motivated playing in Texas for the first time as a professional. For those not familiar, Orakpo is from Texas, and played his college ball at the University fo Texas. Look for guys like him and Malcolm Kelly, who also considers Texas home, to bring their 'A game' today.

The last noteworthy subplot involves Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth and Cowboys Andre Gurode. Haynesworth, of course, famously stomped on the helmetless head of Gurode during his time with the Tennessee Titans. Those looking forward to seeing these two battle might be in for a disappointment because, as of this morning, no one knows whether Haynesworth is going to play today or not. He's been in a walking boot all week long and even folks inside the organization are clueless whether he'll be able to go today.

A final programming note, Art will be keeping things interesting in this thread during the game and I'll be posting live updates from the sidelines via Twitter. Those interested can follow along at www.twitter.com/homermcfanboy for in-game content. The hope is that you guys see something noteworthy during the game and mention it here. Art can then text me on the sidelines and tell me to focus on it. If I see or here anything, I'll update on Twitter, which means you're getting an added bonus Redskins fans can't get anywhere else.

That's it for now. We'll be back shortly with inactives and the answer to the 'will he or won't he' Haynesworth storyline.

ART'S BLOG

Here I am, weeks after stewing in my own angry fan juices over a lousy team, with lousy coaching and overpriced, lousy players, wishing it would all just end, yet, finding myself a man with six quarters of mild faith quietly rebuilding, certain it will be removed from me forever today.

And with that, I tell you Murphy and I are in the booth, watching the television, which, as yet, shows nothing going on down on the field. I'm certain we could tell you what's happening ON the field, which players are warming up and all the rest, but, I refuse. If it ain't on the screen I won't know about it today.

Live Updates: Haynesworth out. Smoot is starting. Both confirmed. Rumor is the offense was feeling frisky and having fun throughout the week. No word as to why, but, something about a weight being lifted. More than 18 points? Portis being out still? No idea what weight. But, it'd be nice to think they are starting to realize how to run an offense.

INACTIVES for us: Barnes, Portis, Williams, Cooley, Henson, Mike Williams, Haynesworth and Wynn.

Inactives for them: McGee, Hamlin, Rossum, Williams, Holland, Preston, Columbo, Johnson

The screen is truth:

Dr. Pepper is the first thing the board shows. Party decks. All with major sponsors and bleach on hair.

Romo sits to pee on screen to a Daughtry song. Daughtry's head is 50-yards long at this moment. The world's largest head. Salvation Army sponsors this? Why aren't they ringing bells.

Still no sign of people on the field, watching the screen. Players are there, but we are unable to see the field from here, so I can't tell if they are real or not and as they are not on the screen, I presume not.

Murphy says team is sporting B on B. I can not confirm as it's not on the screen. But they do have a Papa John's commercial. Now a bunch of people who appear to be fans talking about not drinking. Right.

Jani-Clean Sweep feature now. Mastercard Did you Know. They have a lot of sponsors it appears. Fans in the deck coming in. Some Skins fans. Can't tell you about the inside yet, as I can't see it on the screen, but they do have a Daughtry commercial ringing the bell for the Salvation Army.

Now the screen is showing another screen somewhere in the stadium. Neat.

More Daughtry with homo-erotic, slow mos of Romo sits to pee over the top.

Showing Cowboys on the field, intermixed with stiff old Cowboys waving. How sweet. Mel Renfro appears to be dead, yet still blinking. Weird. Camera man shows Cowboys punter for 45 seconds. Weird. No confirmed sighting of the Redskins being here according to the truth.

Rocking the Thanksgiving show for Thursday. Jonas Brothers ringing the bell. Two Cowboys looking goofy ringing the bell. Then others. More Salvation Army.

No idea what's happening now. A guy looking vaguely like Mickey Rourke who has 15 Top 40 records and performs a lot and is named B.J. Thomas is singing and they have Spider Man 2 on the board. Now the Cowboys locker room, before a longing look at Romo sits to pee on the field.

More Cowboys enter. If I tilt my head at a near 90 degree angle and look down the field, I see a color like I'd like. But not on the screen. Boos now, I assume Skins are entering, but not on the screen. This is an awesome way to watch football. Like being at my house.

Screen has an intro for the game that includes actual face painted Indian whooping. That's awesome. Pole dancers and indians. I don't like Jerry Jones, but the man doesn't give a crap who is cheesed off at his football paradise.

Cheerleaders now entering. I'll need some alone time. Wow.

Blog stuff

9 a.m., Saturday -- Fully packed. Ready to go. To go container of FINE (mostly illegal and entirely supportive of brutal socialist regime) cigars on the counter. "Make me coffee," says the wife who has yet to master the coffee making process, complex as it is. Fine. Coffee made. I jet. Precious container unmoved. Loss not experienced until later.

9:45 a.m., Saturday -- $30 to check a bag. $90 to upgrade to first class and NOT pay for bags to be checked. Can I drink $60 worth to get to Texas? Yes I can.

10:30 a.m., Saturday -- Inform Larry and the Snyder henchman, Karl Swanson, I'm on the plane, will they be there. Both say they will be on the same patio as last year for the same duration.

1:00 p.m., Saturday -- Land. Yes, I did. Text Murf. We can't check in until 3 he says. I arrive at 2 p.m. anyway. They will rush our room. I sit at the bar and putz around. No one is around anyway.

3 p.m., Saturday -- Murf arrives with one of his friends in tow. Murf knows people everywhere. Murf blames Cerrato and the lack of offensive line. I try to educate him that the offensive line differs from the defensive line where ONLY 5 people are going to play, and I ask him to tell me the team with a Pro Bowl left tackle who has another great left tackle in reserve. Right. On offense you play the same five guys up front. Our team had four locked starters if healthy. We didn't stay healthy. And, frankly, as often as Campbell may take a quick hit, he takes a late hit for not getting the ball out on time. Seriously, how long are we going to baby Campbell. He simply doesn't throw the ball on any rhythm. He could make our line look great by throwing on time and limiting the rush. The bootlegs have already started doing that. Campbell could do more with it.

4:15 p.m., Saturday -- Coaxed from my room, we head upstairs to the lobby bar. Henchman is already there with Sonny, who is signing the first of 50 footballs. The scratch off lottery winners are here and they all get Sonny time. Sonny is thrilled. It is now I realize my cigars are not with me. I steal one of Karl's. Very nice. Very potent. Sonny gets a hug from a lady who's married to the guy working on Sonny's water heater. In Dallas. The tongue kissing seemed much :). I kid. I tell Murf's friend, a Cowboy fan, that was Sonny Jurgenson he was near. I asked him if he felt funny being around a great quarterback since he's never seen one, being a Cowboy fan.

4:50 p.m., Saturday -- Murf and friend went off for a bit. I sat with henchman and Sonny just rambling. Murf and friend come in and I tell Sonny to take it easy on him, as he's never been that close to a great QB, being a Cowboy fan. This is a good laugh, but it gets better when Cowboy fan asks how it is to travel. Sonny says it's not too bad, especially this week when you know it's an easy win. Smack talk by the HoFer.

Until 7:30 p.m., Saturday -- Hanging out on the lobby area. A couple of good Pope jokes. Punch lines, "A four letter word for woman which ends in UNT." "That'd be aunt, your grace." "Does anyone have an eraser?" And, "It's an R. IT'S AN R. IT SAYS celibRate." Sam Huff comes over. Cowboy fan actually seems to get visibly erect at the cool atmosphere he's in. Sonny blames the offensive line for not having people, but is stumped to name a team who backs up the Pro Bowl left tackle with another. Murf wants me to call Sonny an idiot like I called Murf. I did repeat that Campbell simply doesn't throw the ball on time. Ever. So, his fault. Lots of execs returning from a stadium tour. Music is strange. Eminem, talking about rubbers, who's got your rubbers. Larry arrives. Overall very positive reviews of the stadium. Karl, Larry, Sam and Sonny go eat. Murf, friend and I zip off to the Keg for our annual Keg dinner.

9 p.m., Saturday -- Two calls from the babysitter. I call back. Brynn is upset daddy isn't home and is worried I'll miss Thanksgiving. She's having a fit because I didn't tell her what I wanted her to make for me as a gift when I get back. This is the hard part with travel as the little ones really enjoy you there and really enjoy doing things for you.

9:15 p.m., Saturday -- No one else I know is at the bar area, so I slip off to do the daddy thing. SLEEP. Our room is bolted from the inside, but open at the patio. Nothing's missing, but I'm pretty sure someone came looking. Early night.

8 a.m., Sunday -- Murf is up and getting ready. I get directions. These are fun times.

8:15 a.m., Sunday -- Run into Larry. He wants to grab a bite. We eat and talk. Sam Huff lost his bags. Someone took them. This gets funny later. Talking about stuff. Bernie Shaw finishes his food and walks out.

9 a.m., Sunday -- Heading to the Stadium. So hyped I expect to be able to see it already, 10 miles away. I do see Six Flags about 5 miles out. We're in the Walmart lot. I am CERTAIN Jones has gotten each lot sponsored, and so will Snyder. But, we're ACTUALLY in the Walmart parking lot. We get through a press gate but no one in the stadium seems to have ever heard there IS a press box. Even when I show them a map of where it is, they blink dumbly and say, "Over there." There is apparently no actual way to get there. We cut through the secure club level. Walk for an hour. The stadium is nice. Big, clean. But, it's like all the indoor, antiseptic stadiums. It doesn't feel like a football stadium. I prefer Philly and Green Bay. We see a woman wearing No. 75 and Rinehart. No way she's not his mom. We ask. She is.

9:30 a.m., Sunday -- Finally find the elevator for the box. Big, spacious space. Like Tampa. Food is already out. Jerry is usually cheap with the media, but it's ok now. Not many people here. We are at the back corner of the end zone, eye level with the screens, but offset slightly.

10 a.m., Sunday -- Sonny asks what time I turned in. Told him 9:30. I'm almost his age now. He laughed. I ask about Sam's bags. Sonny looks scornfully. "Yeah, yeah, he lost his bags. He comes into the breakfast room yelling about someone stealing his bags. Sam never took them from his room." Great fun.

11:15 a.m., Sunday -- Elfin needs help getting on line as there's no IT support. I help him out most of the way before the IT support does show.

11:51 a.m., Sunday -- First sighting of Skins on screen under an Intruder Alert flashing sign. Cowboy intro is 3 minutes long so far. Now cheerleaders. It's unending. Now dudes in jeans and sleeves with black cowboy hats and boots carrying flags. NOW TEAM. And fire. I like fire.

Their ball -- Nice return. If I were inclined to view the field, it would have looked neat. On screen, it looked GREAT. No Haynesworth. Going to be an interesting day. To be honest, for the kickoff and the first two plays, I'm still watching the field. The screen is obtrusive, but not crazy. The screen shows the game feed. In Philly they have different views. You can't see the field opening up if you watch it on screen, so I'll have to neglect some great screen stuff. But, man it's nice. We should be shamed to even be in the building with it.

Our ball -- Jones and Ware. Thank God Davis went over there. It'll be tough. Cowboys not respecting the run yet. Haven't had to. Third and stuff. That would have been nice to get going a little. Punt NO WHERE NEAR the screen.

Their 2 -- Barber runs where he couldn't if Haynesworth were in. Big play alert. Here's where they can strike. Running game is opening up incredibly well for them. GAPING openings. We can't stop them at all. FUMBLE. Romo sits to pee hurt. Hall hurt. Disaster for both. Hall looks gimpy.

Our 2 -- They were stacked that time. A run would have been doomed. Heyer offsides. Weak run. Weak bootleg. They had the boot covered anyway. Everywhere. Play call on third won't work. No one is deep enough for anything. Sack. Wait. Campbell gets out of it. He's going....yes, he MADE a play. Hall has a right knee contusion. Return questionable. Another offsides by Heyer, but that seemed like the ball didn't get snapped. They are doing a good job on the run and pass. This is more like the offense we've long seen here.

Their 3 -- Hall is going to the locker room. Another good looking opening for a shorter run. Cowboys, as they always do against us, seem to have us on our heels. Blache has to adjust. A wide sweep, Landry finds a way not to overrun it and contribute. Second down run is first that seems like we have it stuffed. Nice play by Orakpo. First down slant we're rushing that way. We KNEW what they were calling. Easy INT shot. Blown. Damn it. Third down play, again, we KNOW what they are running there. Nice.

Our 3 -- Pass. No Betts. Campbell sacked because Rock blows a block. Cheap call against the Pokes. Good call :). End of one. 0-0. Hella catch by Rock. Making up for his blown block those three plays. Horrible broken pass by Campbell. Nada run. Bleh. Cowboys are in TIGHT, TIGHT press coverage. Campbell is going to get hit. He's making plays now. Moss gets free. Rock with a nice run. Newman didn't want to get off Kelly's block to help. Thanks Newman. Second down. Campbell has Rock for a TD. Doesn't see him. Gets sacked. Was a screen. Campbell can't take that sack. His primary was covered. He needs to throw it as his feet OR go secondary. Rock was uncovered for a TD and a two yard throw. Sad. Safe play on third. Chance for three. Not bad if we can get the lead. Money. 3-0.

Cowboys trailing -- Nice pass by Romo sits to pee on second after we had a good first down run stop. Overall the Cowboys are just ramming it on us. We usually do a good job stuffing Barber. Not today. Second down in route wide open, but bad throw by Romo sits to pee. Landry does nothing, but thinks he did. Second in route, high by Romo sits to pee. Landry does nothing. Thinks he's all world. But, hey, our ball.

Can we stop the pressure -- Cowboys are taking away quick passes. Getting quick pressure. Campbell's made a couple plays. Missed a couple others. Big drive here to get some space. ROCK with a great run. Empty set after Rock does damage. But Campbell doesn't throw it, even though people are open. Not even sure why he doesn't come off his first read. Little dump off on third. Punt. At least we took position away.

Dallas ball -- Landry is around good plays and thinks he's doing it. He's got confidence today. He even thinks he's the bomb after a six-yard run. Whatever. At least he's not overrunning it. And, to be fair, this is the most around the ball I've ever seen him. Betts being carted off. Third down dive. SHORT. But they GAVE it to him? Crazy. Two minute warning. Carter was held. Easy call. Orakpo is on the ground, but getting up. Now down. Big third down play. We've had ok pressure of late. Need a play here. Redskins invite the dig. Landry is there. Does nothing to make the play, but thinks himself the bomb. You see me hating on Landry, yes. MISS. Going well.

Our ball -- Don't get crazy conservative please. And we don't. Nice. Spread. This is what we can do. Nice in to Davis. Nice out to Moss. Perfect. Time. Moving. Shotgun. Good. If Campbell waits one more second he has Thomas for a TD across the middle. Instead, he goes immediately hot. Ok I guess. Final time out called. Plenty of time. 21 seconds. Only Jason Campbell runs out of bounds like that. Insanity. And a delay of game. Awesome. I guarantee if we run a seam route we have them. Or if we kick a field goal. Wonderful. Campbell running out of bounds is being reviewed. We win that, but they still give us a penalty. Split the baby. I'd run another play. Damn it :) Some guy in a blue suit runs out and everyone reacts. My guess is something is woefully wrong here. Delay is wrong. I knew it. You can't do that nonsense. Again, I'd run ANOTHER PLAY. Miss. Sigh.

Halftime us, 3-0.

Halftime review -- Interesting half. Cowboys started by having us on our heels. We started getting ahead of them, anticipating their plays and doing well against it, though they can still run at will it appears. Offensively we're in a tough spot. Cowboys are pressuring and running press, forcing us quick. It's spotty, but ok. Campbell has made enough plays today to offset the plays he misses, which is rare. Admirable half in all to be leading 3-0 on the road. One moment. Cheerleaders are slutted up and dancing now. Nice. Better than their regular outfits. Anyway, back to the game. Neither team can fully get anything going. Cowboys are a bit more effective offensively, but error prone. The Skins are making more broken plays. That's our advantage in the half. I'd give them the overall advantage because our stuff has been sloppy and seems unlikely to keep falling our way. But, Blache seems to have a read on Garrett as a game wears on. He seems to be able to trigger something out of them which we take advantage of. For us, I think if Campbell could hold on for another second we'd have some big, big plays out there. But, that's the rub. When you let him do that, he never finds anyone and we get crushed. So, the best thing is just throw the damn ball and hope for the best. It's been a pretty even half. If we can stop the Cowboys running game, I think we have a real shot here.

Second half, our ball -- Thomas is our new kick returner. Explosive, shifty, strong. With Rock as our back, that'd better be. Rinehart took a bd one. Too bad, because he's been playing so well and his mom is here. Really is a shame though, as he looked like he could be a good find for us. At least we punt ok sometimes.

Dallas, how do they adjust -- If they come out passing, it may be the best thing for us. If they come out running and we stuff them, even better. Single high safety. Romo sits to pee had Witten the whole time. Dallas is 2 of 6 on third. Dallas is 2 of 7 on third. LOVE IT. ARE back to return the punt. HATE that. Kick almost hits the scoreboard. A defensive struggle now.

Second time in second half -- First drive wasn't so good. The Skins can take Dallas out of the its game plan by doing something here. There again, Campbell handles quick pressure, big play. Field position. GREAT. Long pass. Not as horrific as Campbell usually throws on deep balls. Wouldn't matter. Penalty. Third down now. We've been making plays here. My guess is we try for a few yards, a little more clock and a punt. The crowd is as loud as it's been. Pressure, ball out, no first, but close :).

Dallas deep again - Shotgun. Deep. Triple coverage. Nice throw. Williams bonks. Landry thinks himself superman. Second down, fake pass to run. Big third. Cowboys fans are antsy. Cowboys themselves are feeling pressure. Romo sits to pee steps up. Williams is streaking. Might be a TD if Romo sits to pee leads it out. Throws it away. Nice. NO ARE PLEASE. Seventeen moves for a foot. Lousy.

Skins third -- Cowboys are still pressing and pressuring. We're making big plays. We need another. Quick cut back by Rock. Not much. Little more downhill there. Not bad. Third down. Campbell looks quick. HE WAITS. THAT's it. That's what's there. If it's not immediately there, we wait a second, there is stuff all over. Another big play. Putting the Cowboys back on their heels. Taking time. Loss on the run. Offsides. Nearly a delay. THAT is the Redskins team I know. The smoking 1 yard crossing route. Get out of here with a prayer of a field goal. Please, Suisham. Don't miss this one. 6-0.

Dallas, feeling heat -- Get out of the running game. Panic. Please. A tight end screen after four seconds of the tight end never moving. Ok pressure. Romo sits to pee escapes and gets one to a receiver for the first time all day. End of the third. Griffin making a play. Nice. Shotgun. Run. THAT is what they have been able to do all day. Too bad. Opened wide up. Third and 1. Shotgun. Stop. Huge call now. Fourth and 2. Shotgun. SAC....Damn. He's......YES. INT. Should have knocked it down actually.

Ours -- Easy yards. Bootleg action. Second down run everyone knew was coming. Now a huge third. And easy. No one can tell me this is the same offense. All energy is getting sucked out of here. Zorn bouncing on the field calling a time out. Not actually getting attention. Just prancing on the sideline like a moron. Play action. We are horrible at play action. Horrible. Crazy formation and we run a receiver screen. Looked like it could be big but Spenser hustles. Illegal contact by Jenkins. Obvious. I love the routes. Cowboys are playing press. We're making them run with us. It's working. Nicely. This is a professional offense which appears to have adjusted to the defense. field goal miss that could have been the kicker. Damn.

One more stop D -- First down, Crayton breaks open. Bad pass/drop. Dump to Jones. Hammer time. Good pressure. Good coverage. Romo sits to pee scrambles. Damn. Romo sits to pee laser to Witten. Cowboys are moving. NOT running though. Austin right in front of Romo sits to pee for an easy gainer. Cowboys have life. Witten again. Lots of tight passes now. Same kind of play to Austin. Little come back on time. This is it D. False start. Whew. 14 yards to take the lead. You can do it D. Clock ticks. Second and 10. Second and game most likely. TD. Romo sits to pee bought time. Got it. That could be trouble for this team to recover from.

Last chance --- Down deep after a call that has never been made. And what do we do? Look professional. Drop. Step up. Throw. Easy. Guys are open. It's not that hard a game. We may not have the legs to get all the way down there, but, this is a team that can play. This team would not be where we are now. And there it is. Admirable. Hard fought. The FIRST loss all year that doesn't leave an empty pit in your stomach wondering what the hell we're doing. A team that plays like this can be loved. Can be followed. Can be respected and makes the earlier garbage all the more intolerable. This team doesn't REALLY lack depth or talent. It lacked intelligence. And now we're starting to see that, and you're starting to see the rest. Too little, too late.

To some extent I feel good that my brutally low expectations are starting to be surpassed having had too high expectations unmet. Skins have nothing to be ashamed of, really, for the first time all year. As always, I like to have fun in the locker room, so I don't treat it as a job to go down there and see depressed people. Murf can do that :). Weirdly, I feel better about this team than I have in a long while after this.

TWITTER UPDATES

Murf's Twitter updates from throughout the game:

FYI: Dexter Manley and Mayor Fenty were hanging out on Skins sideline pregame.

Dallas has already shown they plan to run the ball all day long.

Dear coaching staff, there is no time for play action. Please remove these plays immediately.

If Betts is done for the day, the passing game just got a lot more pressure put on it.

Two sacks called back because of Terrence Newman. Ladies and gents - your Redskins offensive MVP!

Quick slants, hot reads and screens are the only way the Skins are gonna slow down Dallas' defense.

LaRon Landry makes a great play removing the ball from Roy Williams. Then walks over him. Make the play. Cut the taunting.

Cartwright abused Ball in the open field. Great run by the Texas native.

Smoot must have got a stinger. Getting some attention on sideline.

How many players went out in the body bag game? Are we closing in on that number yet?

LaRon Landry and Rock Cartwright are you first half studs. Now if Landry could stop celebrating every time he does anything ...

You've had field position the entire second half. Do something with it. Take a shot downfield.

Redskins points - 3. Redskins false start penalties - 4.

Redskins regain lead on false starts 6-4.

Great stand by Orakpo, Carter and friends. INT by Fletcher was just a bonus.

The roof is closed, right? What the hell Suisham?

Even with only one time out there's still plenty of time left. What can the offense do with it?

Hey kicker, 12 points would have been enough today.

This is it? Only 18 posts for a Redskin-Dallas match-up. I guess the fans are just as frustrated as the team, good coverage on a very disappointing but expected outcome...for us to win would have been great but deep down we knew it wouldn't happen, another Danny and vinny tease...
