Seattle Policeman killed in -Update*Suspect shot and arrested**

Just wanted to share- I know we get a lot of stories on the bad cops, I want to share a story with a different view. Been reading on this, and everything points to a planned shooting.

http://www.king5.com/news/local/Breaking-News-Seattle-police-officer-shot-and-killed-68182712.html

Assistant Police Chief Jim Pugel said the two officers were sitting in a patrol car parked at the intersection, discussing a routine traffic stop. The rookie officer, Britt Sweeney, 33, was sitting in the driver's seat; her trainer, Brenton, was in the passenger seat.

Pugel said a car pulled up alongside the patrol car and someone inside opened fire.

Sweeney ducked, and a bullet grazed her back. She called for help and returned fire, Pugel said.

Sweeney, who was grazed by a bullet, managed to return fire as the car backed away and fled the scene.

"From everything that we understand, the car literally pulled up alongside the parked patrol car and began shooting," said Pugel. "So it was without warning and it was a deliberate homicide."

Police say they do not have a good description of the suspect or the make of the car, other than to say it may be small, light-colored, possibly gray or silver.

Pugel said at the press conference that local state and federal agencies are working on the investigation.

"This is an assassination and every resource is being used to bring it to a conclusion," he said

I just read some comments on the newspaper site- I guess there was a big bust on a a Mexican gang/cartel. Some think its a retalliation for that. Who knows. My guess was a gang initiation.(not necessarily Mexican gang)

It happened a couple of blocks from where I work (mid's) so I did hear a lot of commotion. The Mex-gang thing in that area would be pretty much a stretch but not out of the question I suppose.

The odds of them surviving are about nil once the police catch up with them. About a month ago someone opened on some cops just South of Seattle after a high-speed chase. 54 bullets later he was pretty much dead.

Initiation victims are usually hapless randoms. A cop? Thats way too much heat. If its some kind of cartel-style retaliation, I hope they root that out quickly. Can't be having that.

I think that everyone can agree that this is terrible. Police are needed by all, they perform one of the most valuable services in our community.

The disagreement comes about over BAD police-- those that abuse their office-- and appropriate response to them. In my personal opinion, the majority of cops SHOULD be MOST interested of anyone in rooting out bad cops and keeping the police force and the police image as pristine as possible. However, this doesn't always appear to be the case. THere seems to be a little too much of a "fraternal order of the police" mentality-- an "us and them" thinking that leads even good people to circle the wagons and support one-of-their-own, even if they are bad--- or in the very least an upping of what normally good people would consider "grey area" (instead of outright bad). This is unfortunate.

a few weeks ago 4 Seattle police cars were lit on fire in their maintenance lot. It was a few miles from where the shooting happened. Not sure if its related.

The police are sure this was planned, as witnesses say they observed the suspect vehicle parked about a block away while the officers conducted a traffic stop. Shortly after the stop-while the officers were discussing details-the suspect vehicle pulled along side the cop car, blocking the driver door (where female officer sat). She ducked when she realized what was about to happen. The vehicle did a 3point back up manuever and the female cop was able to get out of the patrol car and fire shots at suspect vehicle. Unknown if she hit the car.

Officer Brenton died almost instantly- he leaves behind an 11 yr old son and 8 yr old daughter, wife.

Why would you think that this is an appropriate avenue for discussion in this thread?

Why would you think that this is an appropriate avenue for discussion in this thread?

you should have seen the thread I posted last Feb when a fellow cop I worked with committed suicide. People posted some really awful stuff, only focusing on some bad cops. Here I was trying to mourn the loss of a good friend, and all people could do was ***** and complain about how some cops are bad. Totally classless.

Here we have an entire community freaked out that someone purposely sought out police officers to assassinate them. The FBI and ATF are involved- and have sent notice to all law enforcement agencies in our area a warning. Seattle PD now has SWAT backing up all traffic stops, and they are even pulling detectives back to patrol to help out until the killer is found. Everyone is on high alert right now. Who is next? Will they kill again? This isn't some freak situation where someone was trying to avoid going to jail- this was cold blooded, premeditated assassination. A killing of the worst kind.

interesting continuation as they search for the killer.

http://www.king5.com/news/local/TIMES-Threat-made-to-police-nine-days-before-officer-killed-69175697.html

A note threatening the lives of Seattle police officers was left Oct. 22 at the site where four Seattle police vehicles were set afire — nine days before Saturday night's shooting of veteran officer Timothy Brenton in Leschi, according to sources familiar with both cases.

The arson at a city maintenance yard also involved the use of pipe bombs, a far more sophisticated attack than has been previously disclosed, the law enforcement sources said.

.....

Fliers referring to police brutality were also found at the site, according to previous news reports

Police are also investigating a backpack found in downtown Seattle that contained the names of officers, the shifts they work, and when they come and go.

I used to be a cop in a town about 100 miles from Seattle- not as big of city, but lots of crime. I didn't know this officer, but it hits hard regardless.

I actually am for the release of transcripts, I actually hope that someday they release the audio. They do release many 911 audio tapes of people being killed, and this transcript is of the female cops who survived.

While I was working one of our guys was shot. To hear those words, I just can't describe the chills you get.

The reason I updated the title with possible anarchist links are due to the numerous reports I've been reading about a police protest the day before the fires, which was a week before the killing. Also the backpack with officer information and the history of anarchist groups in Seattle area, along with the threatening to kill cops note left at the scene of the fire- and it mentioned being mad about police brutality.

An issue that the state has been fighting for some time is a public website that lists out police officers and their addresses. I haven't heard much in the last couple years, but people laughed off safety concerns. I hope they rethink their stance now. I couldn't imagine working right now, in Seattle or anywhere near there. Every cop is on pins and needles. Talked to a few buddies of mine I used to work with, and even they are nervous.

Officer Brentons memorial service was today at Seattle Key Arena (where the former Seattle Supersonics used to play), within several minutes of his memorial ending, Police served a search warrant in Tukwila, a city about 20 min south of Seattle.

They found the car matching the suspect vehicle.(early 80's Datsun hatchback) The guy shot at police, they shot him. I read one report says he was shot in the side, another said the head. Both reports say he is alive and at the main hospital in Seattle.

Thats great news. Im glad they got the piece of crap. Are they still a police force under seige though?

Just caught this question, answer- Not in the sense of them thinking it was a group or organization involved.

The suspect is 41, they found DNA at scene, matched gun/bullets, child porn on his computer, IED making materials, several other weapons at his house. Recently fired from being a security guard and had taken criminal justice classes at U of Washington in Seattle. He is being linked to the fires set I mentioned in the thread.

Notes he left and evidence at his house indicate he shot the officer as revenge after a deputy was arrested for assault on a teen female in the juvie jail. That was earlier this year and the trial was about to start last week.

My girlfriends brother-in-law is a Seattle Police Training Officer and had known TO Brenton since he joined the force 10 years ago. He and his trainee were just going over paperwork on the side of the road. It sounds as though Sweeney handled herself very well being that she was wounded. The good news is that she was able to shoot back and wounded the dirtbag. Great news that he was caught and she hopes he gets the chair.
