Hamstrings!!!!

lol, but seriously i'd like to know what the hell they are doing strength and conditioning wise to address this issue. Hopefully their leg training isn't so quad dominant and they have these guys doing PNF stretching on a regular basis. Usually injuries occur due to muscular imbalances and 9 times out of 10 for the guys who actually do train legs, their quadriceps are overly developed in comparison to their hamstrings.

Moreso the under-developed (ie. weak) primary hip extensor Gluteus Maximus. That's the main culprit for pulled hamstrings.

Seeing how this thread is going, I think it's a good time to ask:

Did I ever mention that the guy in my sig is Chris Samuels' older brother and just as awesome? It's a real shame I will never see him again since he's 38, had a bad car accident last year, and the AFL isn't playing but at least I have his jersey, autograph, and picture in my cell phone. I saw a random blog recently where some guy was asking why we never invited him to camp while he was younger.

Well, maybe we'll end up with the brother of the guy, who lines up next to Samuels.

Jinx thread.

D. Thomas hurt again

Devin Thomas joined fellow second-year receiver Malcolm Kelly on the sideline Saturday with an injured right hamstring suffered during a Friday afternoon collision with safety Reed Doughty. Thomas hopes to return by the middle of this week's organized team activities.

"We had run a reverse, Reed had come over [to make the tackle] and they got their feet crossed and fell to the ground," Zorn said. "He just felt something in his hamstring, so we shut him down. I don't think it's pulled. It's just irritated, so we'll give him a rest. I don't want it to pull. I don't want him to have a [major] setback."

Thomas missed 18 days last summer with a pulled hamstring before catching 15 passes for 120 yards as a rookie. Zorn wants either Thomas or Kelly to play well this summer so veteran Antwaan Randle El can become more of a slot receiver.

All I know is that the Butt muscle is connected to the Hamstring muscle.:D

One of the hamstring muscles (biceps femoris) is connected to the sacrotuberous ligament.... which is connected to the long dorsal sacral ligament.... which is connected to the "butt muscle" :)

Everything is interconnected along that line.... including the low back... and the calves and plantar fascia. All of it needs to be worked.... to minimize hamstring pulls :)

Is there even any preventative measures for hamstring injuries?

Yes, I wrote about this a couple times....

For hamstring strains you need to strengthen them with primarily ECCENTRICS. Generally something like straight leg deadlifts w/ slow negatives or good mornings. Glute ham raises and some other type of exercises work... but it's mostly the eccentric portion you want and you want to work a lot of endurance there to mitigate the possibility of hamstring fatigue which is when the strains occur. Let me explain:

Reason being the hammies act as (1) primary mover in explosive hip extension (propeling the athlete forward) and (2) in slowing down the leg during the knee drive forward.

The strains occur as the hamstrings fatigue when the knee drives forward as there is not enough strength to decelerate the knee -- thus, the muscle gets distended because the myofibrils themselves take the force and it strains. This is also why kickers, punters, soccer players and any other players that KICK for sports have problems with hamstring strains -- a lack of eccentric hamstring strength-endurance to slow down the leg as it moves forward.

Addressing the fault is pretty easy... which is why I was kinda pissed that we had like 7+ ham strains that one year. Clearly, our trainers did not know how to properly condition our athletes to avoid this injury.
