DL dept. : Demetric Evans ~ ~ ~

I'm glad to see him planning for the future cause he's likely to be the odd man out this offseason.

How. Daniels, Griffin, Monte, and Carter first unit

Wilson and Evans are the backup ends. Evans can play some DT need be.

James has to show something to make this roster

I don't think James needs to show much to make the roster. I think he's already made the roster. He's a project and they said they're not going to rush him back. We know that when healthy James has more potential than Evans. So thats somebody else above Evans. If one of our younger linemen can show some ability, then Evans is the guy whose playing time is uncertain.

We've heard many things about Wilson and his play last year. Lets remember that this time last year, nobody knew who Wilson was. I wonder if anybody else will show some similar talent. Do we really want Evans as our 4th defensive end? Or do we want more talent we can develop into a starter-type material? I think Rob Jackson, Tommy Davis, Demetric Evans, Kevin Huntley, Dorian Smith are all going to be competing for a few roster spots. Right now the odds are in Evans's favor based on his experience, but how much do these younger guys need to show in preseason to take his roster spot?

Very good point. We and the team knows what Evans has to offer. I don't think it would take much for one of the younger guys to unseat him. Weather it be more strength, coming off the snap better or what have you. If they are just a hair or some behind Evans, then they may go with one of them to see what they can mold. Evans I think would have to make more strides to keep his spot. I think Rob Jackson could unseat him.

I think Evan has a large advantage over Jackon. I look for Jackons to be cut pretty early.

I don't think we can say that this early in the offseason. I've heard so may conflicting reports on the guy Jackson that it kinda implies that he wasn't looked at too much by scouts. In training camp, we'll see what the coaches and reporters who get to watch him on a daily basis have to say about him.

Add to the DEs that I talked about the potential of guys like Alexander and Mapu and we may have some talent worth taking a look at this year along the defensive line. This could spell trouble for guys like Evans and Boschetti.

Mapu could be spelling Griff in a year and earning starting duties in a couple years, If he can get back to the level he was playing at before he went on his mission. Still I think he's a year away from being a contributor. Alot of talent thought.

I dont think he was looked at much either. However his production was almost non-exsistent his Sr year and most of thee reports I read didnt think he had much of a shot at the NFL.

Evans won't be the odd man out because he also can play inside at DT when needed.

I would not call it a slam dunk that either scenario a lot of fans are counting on are going to come to pass:

1. Erasmus James comes back to 100% health to play a contributing role.

2. Chris Wilson following up 2007 with a more impressive showing in 2008.

James' return is not a lock, hence the trade for a conditional 7th rounder.

Chris Wilson is 240 pounds. He never will be an everydown player for the Redskins at DE.

Wynn could also play inside, but he was released. Right now we have Daniels who can move inside and play better than Evans. ts not like Evans is a pro bowl level player. We saw him get passed on the depth chart by Wilson as the guy coming in for Daniels on third downs last year. And if James can come back this year, which the coaches all expect him to do, then he'll take the role as Daniels's primary backup (in case of an injury).

I don't see any way that James doesn't make this team. Yeah, I know we traded a conditional 7th rounder, but thats as good as gone. This guy was traded for based on his potential. He's reunited with his old line coach, who just loves him. The only way he doesn't make it is if he's re-injured in the preseason, and I just don't see us letting that happen. We're going to take it slow with him.

Then we look at the backup DT roles. We have Mapu, Daniels, Golston, Alexander and Evans. It might just wind up being a numbers crunch in going for potential over experience (limited experience) in Evans.

Wlison still isnt a guy that can backup anyone. While he might be a better pass rusher than Evans, he's not a everydown DE. And Evans is listed as Carters' backup.

Even if Wilson isn't listed as Daniels's backup, James will be. I don't see James not making the team. And when he makes the team, the only thing that keeps him from being the primary backup is injury concerns, which they're being careful with.

Wilson is the third down specialist, which is a role that Evans was handling in years past.

I really wonder if Wilson can put on any weight and still keep his speed. If this guy can become an every down DE, I might like it.

Well, he's will probably have to beat out James then. So we still need a backup for Carter and that will probalby be Evans until we get another player on the team. I dont see Buzz or Jackson really pushing him.

NFL 2008 Breakout contenders

Erasmus James, DE, Washington Redskins

James had left knee reconstruction surgery twice in two years and the Vikings decided to move on, dealing the 18th pick from the 2005 draft to the Redskins for a conditional seventh-round pick.

Washington will be patient with James, but hopes he can ultimately be a piece of a defense looking to move up from No. 16 against the pass.

“If we’re smart about it, whatever he’s got in his tank, we can get it out of him,” defensive coordinator Greg Blache recently told the Washington Post. “Where coaches go awry is when they try to take a guy and push him and make him play before he’s ready. We’re going to let him play when he’s ready.

“If it takes us a little while, we’ll have the patience to wait for him to get well. … The secret is that if you can get him healthy and keep him healthy, you’re going to have a good football player.”
