So, being a bit of a poker junkie, I've always been interested in the online world but have been wary of the fact that any poker site can make a lot more money if they tweak their programs so that chasing is rewarded, multiple full houses come out, and so on. This fear has been bolstered by stories from friends and my only brief experience online, which usually revolved around watching four people catch a flush in one hand, a four of a kind beat the nut full house, and a straight losing to a straight losing to a straight.

Still, having come off my best couple of months of live poker, I'd like to find a site that I have some confidence in. I'm sure there are plenty of players here - what sites seem the most legitimate? Any personal experiences of one seeming to be head and shoulders above the others?

Hmmm, Poker Stars seems to be getting a lot of love. Hope making deposits is pretty easy with them.

EASY making deposits and EASY getting your money. Depending on your bak roll their $.25/$.50 and $1/$2 games aren't bad.

Doyles Room is better IMHO at cash games though. Just as easy to deposit and just as easy to get your money. I seem to have better luck there than on PS at the cash tables.

Multitabling is awesome but it can be hard as hell if you get over 3 tables.

I play on Pokerstars every once in awhile. It's fun, and the competition is usually pretty good. I will say this...I'm not a conspiracy theorist and generally believe their games are legit, but I see more flushes, full houses, and river aces on their than I think you can reasonably expect in a game.

I was in a tournament Friday, and I saw two 4-of-a-kind's within ten hands. I got knocked out with a set of threes, was called by a guy with a pair, he hit runner-runner clubs on the turn/river to make a flush. I know this stuff happens occasionally, and I'm aware you see many more hands online than you do in a live game, but I have to admit that it happens frequently.

I combat this by playing extremely tight, and it usually gets me in or near the money in most tournaments. You just have to keep your cool and realize that you're going to take a few terrible beats every once in awhile. I've found that in general, players who play their cards correctly are rewarded.

It seems like their are a lot of ES folks on Pokerstars, we really should get an ES tournament set up on there.

Can you make private tables on Stars? I play at Full Tilt but I'd be interested in something like an ES tournament or even cash game and hell I'd probably sign up for Stars .

I don't play internet poker, but as a math person I've always been interested in the mathematics of gambling as an exercise (we even teach Blackjack and simple card counting in our probability unit some years), so I actually have something to add here. Well, two things to add. The other is that The Wizard of Odds has a great site covering the mathematics of gambling.

Im getting sick of all of the donks on PS calling my all in when i have AA,

and they have something like 56 off, and end up rivering me lol!

I know it's annoying on a case by case basis, but long-run this should make you happy. More often than not, this is one you should win. Try to think like Vegas.

I sometimes see this complaint, but the fact is that it is so much easier to play quickly on-line that it is very likely that you're just seeing many more hands, and just the bad ones stand out. You probably wouldn't play nearly as much in person.

Further, the guy that runs the site I linked above does independent verification of a lot of these sites, and most of the biggies are on the up and up. The fact is that they make so much money (and in poker, they make money on every game no matter who wins) that it would be stupid to risk it by cheating when they don't need to. Now, he checks out the casino game side of things, but I'd have to imagine it'd be the same.

That's just my admittedly academic understanding, though.

Actually, I try not to think of it as a complaint, because as I said, I generally believe the sites are on the up and up. I play a pretty tight, conservative game, and I usually come out on top in most of my showdowns. My observations are rarely from hands I was involved in, just watching other people go at it with ridiculous card combinations and hitting their outs.

You're right though, it probably is just the volume of hands I'm seeing, and I said as much. As always of course, the terrible beats you take (and see others get hammered with) stick with you a lot longer than any wins you might have;)

To answer someone else's question, I know PokerStars does some private tournament setups, but I don't know what you have to do to get one set up.

You can make private tournaments. Apparently you can set them up with PS via email. Don't think you can make private cash tables, though.

Interesting. I don't think Full Tilt has that option. I've always wanted to have online tourneys with friends, and an ES tourney would be cool too. Did you try that test I posted? It is a little long but pretty solid.

What method do you use to get your money in/out of pokerstars? My brother plays there and says that most of the middle sites have closed and there are few options, if any, remaining, other than having them send you a check.
